Sadly here sexy externals will not equate to a nice ride. The Class 800/801 has ended up just being the Javelins but in DEMU form, and so will suffer from the 'airplane windows' disease the Pendolinos, Voyagers, and Javelins are cursed with. Also Hitachi have never been able to resolve the hunting with the Javs nor the interior noise levels that no electric train should be exhibiting. Sure the journey time from StPancras to Ashford is a godsend, but I'm as glad to be out of the thing as I am a Pacer at the end. Which is just depressing.

The largest problem for me is the automatic doors. On a HST125 mk3 you still have the sense of freedom associated with being able to open the droplight and see outside, or to get some fresh air. Not possibly having that takes something away from rail travel.
The 800/801 will probably be terrible to actually use, bland, uninteresting, uncomfortable. If it is essentially a 395, longer journeys will not be pleasant, it's ok for a 40 min blast to St Pancras but it doesn't match up to intercity standard.

In all fairness, trolley poles allow for simpler overhead wire design (since it can run straight and not in a zig-zag as is requiered by pantographs), so for streetcar use at least it compensates somewhat for the inconveniences. They do allow relatively high speeds though, the PE ran interurbans at 60-70mph regularily, and it is said to have run their cars up to 90mph (150km/h).
It wasn't just america, in Spain most first generation tram systems had trolleypoles until their closure in the 60's-70's. Alexandria in Egypt has trams running with trolleypoles, and I recall one or two cities in eastern Europe that do so. Also Hong Kong.

The train can run both ways as they are.
It's the most common way to do locomotive-powered passenger trains in europe, right after using multiple-units. These trains run all day (and sometimes also at night). There's no room in the timtable for reconfiguring the train.

They're not really tiny, they just have a smaller undercarriage, since they don't use traditional bogies. Regular train cars sit on top of the bogies which sit on top of the wheels, Talgos "hang" from the wheels.
