They were planning on fully modernizing the catenary system, with the goal of eventually switching to pantographs, but the Great Depression hit, and the railroad never again had the money to finish. When it was abandoned in 1963, most of the equipment was at least 30-40 years old.

Sadly here sexy externals will not equate to a nice ride. The Class 800/801 has ended up just being the Javelins but in DEMU form, and so will suffer from the 'airplane windows' disease the Pendolinos, Voyagers, and Javelins are cursed with. Also Hitachi have never been able to resolve the hunting with the Javs nor the interior noise levels that no electric train should be exhibiting. Sure the journey time from StPancras to Ashford is a godsend, but I'm as glad to be out of the thing as I am a Pacer at the end. Which is just depressing.
>>
>>841994
Why the fuck do you fags still use link and pin?
>>
>>846485
The largest problem for me is the automatic doors. On a HST125 mk3 you still have the sense of freedom associated with being able to open the droplight and see outside, or to get some fresh air. Not possibly having that takes something away from rail travel.

The 800/801 will probably be terrible to actually use, bland, uninteresting, uncomfortable. If it is essentially a 395, longer journeys will not be pleasant, it's ok for a 40 min blast to St Pancras but it doesn't match up to intercity standard.

In all fairness, trolley poles allow for simpler overhead wire design (since it can run straight and not in a zig-zag as is requiered by pantographs), so for streetcar use at least it compensates somewhat for the inconveniences. They do allow relatively high speeds though, the PE ran interurbans at 60-70mph regularily, and it is said to have run their cars up to 90mph (150km/h).

It wasn't just america, in Spain most first generation tram systems had trolleypoles until their closure in the 60's-70's. Alexandria in Egypt has trams running with trolleypoles, and I recall one or two cities in eastern Europe that do so. Also Hong Kong.

Fuck yeah Trolleypoles!

There's a cab on the other side of the train as well. Only reason they'd take of the locomotive is that something broke or needs maintenance.
The train can run both ways as they are.
It's the most common way to do locomotive-powered passenger trains in europe, right after using multiple-units. These trains run all day (and sometimes also at night). There's no room in the timtable for reconfiguring the train.

Similar to the UK class 91. They form an 'Inter City 225', class 91 leading, with driving van trailer styled as a class 91 at opposite end. The 91 has 2 cabs, although mainly used in the forward position unless there is an issue.

The green rectangles on the doors and the poorly designed 'GWR' logo aside, this livery looks fantastic. It's not over the top, or trying to seem modern. It is a nice colour and recognises the history GWR has.

It's nice on Mk3s where they can put the springs in a nice green making everything match, but on the 800s it won't work. The old fashioned British green style will clash with the shape of a new Japanese unit.

These GE boxcab electrics began operation in 1915 and some remained in service all the way through the end of electrification in 1974. Nearly 60 years of continuous mainline freight and passenger service. They could have kept going even beyond that if electrification wasn't prematurely abandoned.

That's a big step backwards.

60 years is alright. Electric locos last longer than diesels with less moving parts, and traction motors may be easily replaced when required. Reminds me of the class 86 here in the UK, built in 1965 and still used.

It pisses me off when people care for trains to be "new", instead of caring for them giving good service. If a 50 year old train runs well and doesn't give any more problem than a new one, there's absolutely no reason to stop using it.

Where I'm at they just retired some 32 year old EMUs, which ran perfectly and were air conditiones, because MUH PROGRESS.
>>
>>848819
Yeah I completely agree. But pax generally don't know much about railways. They don't know what they want. When they say 'new', they just mean reliable, clean, and comfortable. New trains aren't definitely going to provide that. A simple deep refurb with new seats and an internal repaint is essentially a new train. I hear people discussing how they think they're on a new train when on unrefurbished 15 year old units.

Because the Milwaukee Road is the classic American underdog story, a railroad with limited resources surrounded by powerful competitors that nonetheless built a transcontinental line to the Pacific, electrified hundreds of miles of mountainous track, and made a successful go of it for over 50 years. The tragedy of the line was that it was ultimately done in by its own management, despite the best efforts and intentions of its employees on the ground. It's a railroad with an interesting and exciting history, with unique aspects as well as familiar ones.

It also had aesthetically pleasing locomotives, paint schemes, and trackside scenery. What's not to like?

All of this.

Pendos are some of the worst units I've ever ridden in. Even in 1st class it's a disgusting cramped dark ugly and uncomfortable ride.
>>

The aircon was not working on the one I took from BHM this morning, also the toilet was niffy. I was on the 390026, still enjoyed the tilting, you go past a big house near rugby on a curve and looking out the window it goes all inception-y.

Why isn't it out running charters? There's been decades to get everything in order.
>>
>>858617
Money. It'll cost about £200,000 just to move it to a place that can actually accommodate it. Not to mention parts, mainline running compliances and red tape.

Basically, there's no plans to get it running and if it were done by the CHC, it'd be shitty job.

It's missing a full first class section, owing to a previous volunteer ripping the seats out and cutting the mountings off.

tl;dr - They can't be bothered and money is a thing. They also have bigger legal issues to worry about, right now.

The one thing I don't get about US traction is why the engines are so huge yet the carriages so small. Talgos and the TGV-A do this too; being a Brit I just don't quite get the designs. Why not have extra tall super-roomy amazeballs saloons?

>>858636
There's already a 125 Preservation Group and I think they have a couple of full sets earmarked, but it'll be a while before any of them cascade out of service.

Also Project Miller has the prototype (41001) running again with a Paxman Valenta, and I think they're going to get mainline cert? The only problem is they don't have any stock to run it with; all the prototype MkIII's were either converted, cut up, or are currently part of the Royal Train.

They used chopper propulsion while claiming to be the latest and greatest. At the time, VVVF was already becoming widespread (and indeed in the mid 1990s, a set was finally fitted with inverters and AC motors. That set also ended up killing 7 people when the driver died of a heart attack on the controls)

Although I guess you could argue they *did* have artificial intelligence, in the sense that sometimes the train would just have a mind of its own where the brakes wouldn't work

The locos are so big because they're built for American rolling stock and loading gauge. The carriages are ass-tiny because they were built in Spain or something. They're not really tiny, they just have a smaller undercarriage, since they don't use traditional bogies. Regular train cars sit on top of the bogies which sit on top of the wheels, Talgos "hang" from the wheels.

The Railjet is okey, i use him only to travel only one Station (Vienna-St.Pölten or Vienna- Neustadt) most of the time i didn't even sit in the chair i stand by the doors.

With the changing in 2 weeks public Transport become shittier. only more Trains for the longdistance traffic.

Well, the 500 Series is still being used, but all remaining sets (W2-W8) have been shortened from 16 cars to 8 cars and serve only for the Kodama services running between Shin-Osaka and Hakata

W1: Scrapped, Car 1 has been moved to the Kyoto Railway Museum (slated to open next April) while Car 16 is stashed in the Hakata General Stock Center
W2 > V2: Converted to Pla-Rail Car from Summer 2014 to Summer 2015, now converted to 500 Type EVA from now until Spring 2017
W3~W8 > V3~V8: Basically replaced any 0 and 100 Series West JR had for Kodama services

This is the launch ceremony in Shin-Osaka Station for the 500 Type EVA

Same problem that plagued the Talgos then I'm guessing.

I've always liked the TGV Duplexes and similar trains personally.
