It's a Shimano Alfine 8, OEM for the Spot Ajax. When I bought it I could not quite stretch up to the Roloff, was afraid of Alfine 11 quality and durability issues, and did not want a vulnerable click-box hanging out the rear axle. It's never seen any maintenence and does the job (all-season city errands) perfectly.

I had to retension it twice in the first month, not for last two years. They are not supposed to stretch but the various bearings and teeth may have worn in a bit from new. Spot swiveling dropouts are no problem. Other frames do it various ways, always thought the encentric BB style looked best. Gates various tension measuring tools are kinda useless, but you just get a feel for it quick enough. Sometimes it squeaks slightly, almost always silent. Immune to mud and snow. Whole drivetrain area clean, dry, and pleasant to work on without lube. It does what it says in the tin, but I might prefer a full chaincase next time.
