I was gonna screencap and post the OxMu article from Indonesia, but just the general section is 23000px tall, so it's not really feasible.

Listening to this now, and there's some really interesting instrument here that I can't really put my finger on whether it's a ideophone or what. It sounds almost like a marimba, except played really fast on each note. The OxMu mentions that bamboo xylophones so I'm guessing it's one of those? The liner notes don't really give me much clarity.

Last track features some really prominent gendang drums, which makes it super pumping. A completely different beast to gamelan music. I would like to see the dance that accompanies this kind of music, apparently something similar to wrestling - that is, two guys pretend fighting each other; imitating the silat martial art.

What for?
>>

Existing, or as they like to call it "ban evasion". Mods hate me.

Thanks for these threads and the recs in the OP. It's really helping me get more into traditional and folk music.

Started listening to this now. No liner notes, unfortunately, so I'll have to wing what the album is about.

The gamelan section on RYM is chaotic.

Apparently the jegog ensemble form almost died out in 1974 due to an earthquake wiping out all other ensembles apart from I Nyoman Jayus'. Pretty interesting stuff. The jegog itself is a pretty cool instrument made of bamboo. The wooden sounds really make this bamboo gamelan ensemble sound really different from anything else I've heard.

Yeah this was great. It's really dynamic in terms of intensity - some sections are really powerful, some are soft and smooth. I enjoyed that.

Now for something completely different. Again, no liner notes.
>>
>>60373416
wow this is REALLY different. It sounds more like Italian serenades or something. What?
>>
so far I've been really enjoying Indonesian trad, albeit I'm still rather uninformed about it.

here's some stuff I have been listening to (I'll probably post mega link later for anyone interested):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_R1O1I9oXI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6_OBBaIUvo
^^^This one is especially interesting the music is so ferocious and haunting

It seems like most of this music originates from other Bali or Java, I'd like to explore some of the other islands too, so if anyone has recommendations for stuff from Borneo, Papau, etc. I'd be happy to take them

Yo Hampus thanks for what you do here. I am planning on studying ethnomusicology and it's so great that other people share my passion.

Really? That'd be pretty dank. I was considering it myself for a little while.
>>
>>60375498
np, btw are my trad albums still shared?
every time I long on to slsk it says they aren't shared :/
>>
>>60375613
Yeah I was a music and pre-med guy but I decided in the last few weeks to switch to music and history and follow my passion. I am still an undergrad so I can offer no insight but it looks like such an engaging field.
