My Bloody Valentine - Isn't Anything, 1988 (320kbps CBR)
After meddling with noisy post-punk/lo-fi jangle pop for a couple of years and a handful of singles/EPs, MBV releases their first full length, which is both a departure from their earlier sound and simultaneously a focused exercise in noise and texture, which were incipients elements of their music, though subdued by the openly poppy compositions. The album is one of many (some would say the most significative) to lay the foundations for shoegaze, a genre which makes emphasis in texture and walls of dreamy noise, moreso than in melody. Soft singing, both male and female, music somewhere between dreamy pop and noisy rock, we get glimpses that point towards the band's (some would argue the style's) most brilliant moments. Tracks like Feed Me With Your Kiss, with its frantic wailing guitars moving along a rockin' tune and soft but dexterous vocals, No More Sorry-- meditative, melancholic, almost 100% texture, this album sounds like shoegaze's blueprints. Even though its historical importance and enjoyability are hardly disputed, I still think of this album as underrated.

The last couple of years in music have been all about the greatly publicised return of wave after wave of legendary bands that had been inactive for 10-25 years. Most of these were sore disappointments/shameless cashgrabs, only a handful were pleasant surprises and some were lukewarm "not bad" albums. MBV was amongs the latter. This album contains tracks that, go back all the way to 1996 when Mr. Shields was flirting with adding electronic elements to his trademark sound, something that bands like Seefeel, Third Eye Foundation and Amp had already perfected, but whatever.
