It's the 5th of November in most parts of the world.

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and, ideally, discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily; these people are in it to venture out of their comfort zone by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.
We track our progress using calendars, which we fill with the albums we listen to on each day, and a rating of some sort for all of them. There are templates in mega link at the end of this post. We encourage you to write the albums' titles and the artists' names somewhere on your calendar. We don't have any tools for creating these calendars; we use simple image editing softwares.
You can predetermine a schedule for a month, or you can report back on whatever album you randomly picked every day. Many of us make our schedules interesting in various ways, popular ones being genre restrictions, new releases, and recs from the /daily/ community.

On Saturdays a number of us partake in listenalongs. A link to the album and the chart is provided when the time comes.

We had a plug.dj room, which we used to hang out for a little while. It's now forever empty, so if you want to spend a little time there, it is too late. You can find the temporary substitute here though:

Anyone can start the threads, but usually one of /daily/'s dedicated trips starts them. If the thread is not yet up by 15:30 GMT, we encourage you to start it! Just be sure to use the standard OP.

Templates were once in a mega link in the archive, now most of us use

Most importantly, have fun!

Violin Melody (1996) by M. S. Gopalakrishnan, recommended by hahaha

The violin, as they often say, is the instrument that comes closest to imitating the human voice. Of all instruments, this is the one that we expect to really sing. In karnatak music, the violin is most often found to be very literally imitating the voice of the singer, closely following and repeating the melody of the improvisation sometimes only a fraction of a second behind.

M. S. Gopalakrishnan goes beyond imitation. His style takes the portamenti, bends, and glissandos that characterise the sung voice and push them into something so colourful and free as to resemble a caricature. I'm convinced that he plays about 96% of his silky, slippery melodies with just a single finger, dragging it up and down the neck of the violin with devilish precision. The effect is something that is far too woozy to be mistaken for a vocal quality; instead it becomes a wholly new and idiosyncratic way of playing the violin. It would almost be drunken in its slurring vocabulary, if it were not at the same time so tightly and precisely controlled. Gopalakrishnan's playing, then, is remarkable in itself.
>>
>>60166854

Yet I can't help but notice that the performances on Violin Melody only rarely grab the attention. In fact I can pinpoint the places where Gopalakrishnan is at his most appealing - the extremes ends of alap and drut, or the beatless beginnings and exhilarating endings of each recording. And herein lies the problem: the compositions that have been chosen here are, for the most part, rather short and boring. Only two compositions are given something close to an extended treatment, the highlight being the 19-minute 'Samaja Vara Gamana'. Gopalakrishnan is unable to bulk up the rest of the shorter pieces included here into something special, because his style of improvisation is often so middle-of-the-road without the free improvisation and driving conclusion that we get in the two longer pieces. Identifiable his playing may be, but it suffers without something to play off against.

Nonetheless, the aforementioned 'Samaja Vara Gamana' is a treasure. In ragam Hindolam, the vadi or key note is Pa (the 5th), and the constant return to this unresolved resting place gives the entire performance a delicate sense of urgency throughout. As things progress, Gopalakrishnan gets into some rhythmic games of imitation with his two mrdangam and ghatam accompanists, furthering my suspicion that he's at his best when bouncing off others. These rapid fire copy-cat phrases are delightful, and furthermore lead into an exciting and unusual shared solo between the two percussionists - almost like a kind of jugalbandi. Wonderful.
>>
>>60166854
>>60166880

Unfortunately there is little else to tear the record away from its drab insistence on unremarkable compositions made no less dreary by Gopalakrishnan. Perhaps this illustrates the central importance of improvisation in Indian music; it doesn't matter how singular or identifiable your style is if you can't move the bandish off the ground. This is an interesting insight, at least for my own listening preferences, and I'm grateful for the lesson. Not at all to slight Gopalakrishanan, either - I look forward to hearing more of his long-form performances.

added, and noted. Also I just finished listening to Mushroomhead's self titled album which i was not a huge fan of. The concept with all the tv recordings was interesting and stuff but the entire thing felt like a garbled mess of half-realized ideas and mediocre metal. Every once in a while there was neat moment, like the track episode 29 which uses clips of dialog from the 29th episode of Twin Peaks (an excellent series I just finished watching a month ago), also musically there are some parts of some of the tracks which remind me a bit of Big Black or The Jesus Lizard or something of that sort. Unfortunately, Mushroomhead fails to capture either of those bands.

DJ Pica Pica Pica - Planetary Natural Love Gas Webbin' 199999

Apparently a side project of Boredoms member Yamatsuka Eye, DJ Pica Pica Pica has only one album, Planetary Natural Love Gas Webbin', which seems to be more of a DJ mix than a legit album. The discogs page for the album even lists different artists for each track, but looking them up it seems those are more the main sample sources for each song. It certainly is a diverse sample source, drawing from techno artists and other DJs to the Baka Forest People of southern Cameroon.

While the sources and samples are pretty intriguing on paper, I certainly couldn't tell from the music. The songs themselves tend to be a little on the blander side, and are entirely based around pretty straightforward dance beats (that occasionally step up in complexity or speed). And while I'm not sure if this is exactly valid criticism, the style of dance music this album was playing sounded super dated.

The most interesting part of the album to me, actually, was the transitions between songs. The transitions were really an art in themselves. They were absolutely seamless, but infinitely more interesting. Maybe if I were more into straight dance music, I'd enjoy this more, but alas. Most songs on here were pretty meh, and even with transitions being especially cool, most of the time this album is pretty uninteresting. I might re-listen again sometime, maybe while jogging.

strong 2.5/5

Today I listened to two not-so-great debut EPs

>The Homesick - Twst yr Wrsts
Self-proclaimed psych punk band from The Netherlands. Nearly everything about this was poorly done; from the mediocre production (playing garage punk with clean guitars with a phaser?) to the god-awful vocals (those misplaced screams and insincere sounding 'fucks' all over the place) to their completely lethargic sound and complete lack of memorable melodies. I guess All the Girls Are Grey is an okay track and the nod to Weezer's Sweater Song on Friday Night (or is it just a blatant ripoff?) was kinda funny.
Shit/10.

>Yung Gud - Beautiful, Wonderful
meme.
Seriously though, this is a decent collection of atmospheric and hard-hitting trap beats. No subtlety to be found here, just pounding hardstyle-flavoured kicks, roaring basses, slightly obnoxious synths and chipmunked vocal samples. The guy has some obvious potential but I wish he focused more on texural subtleties. It sounds smooth as fuck though.

>>60176829
Pretty tight riffs and complex drumming backed by some of the more tolerable death metal vocals out there (but still not exactly good). However, the album is a little too repetitive overall, with the only things happening in the songs to spice things up being tempo changes (cool) and guitar solos (whatever). Pretty brvtal, pretty rockin', but overall nothing more than an alright listen.

>>60176812
ok
>>
>>60176889
I think I mostly agree, I want to listen to it again though. some of the riffs break into outrageously groovy territory, and the production is almost astonishing given that 1) they did it themselves & 2) in the mid-90s. definitely think the vocals leave a lot to be desired too.

Oh boi dis chart iz doin gud

>Zs - Xe

Dissonance, atonality, free improvisation.
Old concept, that are being totally renewed here: this melodies aren't disturbing because they lack tonality, like the ones in a lot of modern classical compositions; they simply lack tonality. They are emotionless. They are cold. They are surreal.
This is also because every member of this band is a fucking virtuoso: no one ever misses a note, no one goes off beat; they seem like they were being programmed to play like this. They don't seem human.
This album is inhuman.
This album is not simply disturbing, it's terrifying.

When this record decides to explode, to raise the volume and the power, then it's really destructive: a chaotic mass of sounds is pushed inside your ears with incredible violence.
This album isn't only terrifying, it also annihilates.

This record literally terrorized me. I fear this record.
This album isn't only a terrifying annihilator, it's also an extreme experience, a beautiful experience. But it's an experience that I'm not going to live again soon.

Glitch, Experimental, Avant-garde Jazz
Dark ambient-ish Avant-garde Jazz With glitchy electronics and live processing (by Mika Vaino from Pan Sonic).
86/100

>James Ferraro - WAR
I don't remember much about this but it was nice
68/100

>The Gerogerigegege - Hotel Ultra
Two sound collages with funk, porn, saxophone and mild smooth noise
62/100

>Intonarumori Orchestra - Intonarumori Orchestra 53
Otomo Yoshihide, Toshimaru Nakamura, Sachiko M, Atsuhiro Ito, Tetuzi Akiyama and Taku Sugimoto, playing instruments called Ululatore, Crepitatore, Scoppiatore, Rombatore, Stropicciatore and Ronzatore, they sound like engines or something... yeah.
53/100

>Fred Frith - Clearing
Experimental electro acoustic guitar stuff with loads of pedals (delays, octavers, loop pedals, distortions). Each track has it own set-up of effects as a framework for the jamming.
On the first half some tracks didn't really move anywhere but second half didn't have that problem.
75/100

>Beau Navire - Hours
emoviolence, hardcore
72/100

>Beau Navire - Lumens
69/100

>Merzbow - Amlux
Noise with rhythmic looping elements.
Quite meditative.
78/100

>Merzbow - Ikebana: Merzbow's Amlux Rebuilt, Reused And Recycled
Two and half hour double CD of Merzbow remixes, featuring KK Null, Alec Empire, John Wiese, Hrvatski Dj Spooky and many more.
First CD has all the tracks that include percussion and melodies and the second CD is more of pure noise.
It's Greatly varied and after 2 hours the amount of shit happening all the time starts to get overwhelming.
In contrast to the original Amlux this is obnoxiously restless.
79/100

>Craft - Total Soul Rape
aggressive black metal
nothing too memorable
72/100
>>
>>60179003

[1/2]
>Abruptum - Obscuritatem Advoco Amplectère Me
Two 25 minute tracks of free improvisation Avantgarde Black Metal.
Kinda reminds me of John Zorn's Painkiller even has similar tempo changes. The synths mostly play a one note drone through the tracks but there are few highly embarrassing synth licks thrown around on some cheap-ass Casio, other than that, and the few seconds where the vocalist tries to sing a melody instead of doing his deranged moaning, groaning and growling, it's great.
77/100

>Impaled Nazarene – Tol Cormpt Norz Norz Norz...
Black metal with Grindcore influence.
Cheesy but fun.
100/63

>Impaled Nazarene – Ugra-Karma
like the last one but fuking boring and with weaker production
50/100

>Alexander Von Schlippenbach's Globe Unity Orchestra – Globe Unity 67 & 70
Peter Brötzmann Trio, Manfred Schoof Quintet and prolly some other ppl as well form a big ass free jazz orchestra. It chaotic.
71/100

In the proper chronological order Globe Unity should be between Intonarumori and Fred Frith but I fucked up.
I can try to write something more on some of these later if someone wants me to.

Man, I just did not like this. It's like Girl Talk, but glitchier, and it heavily samples from artists whose voices already annoy me. If you thought Eminem and Lil Wayne's voices were already intolerable, just wait till you hear how this guy use them.

It definitely has high points, but those moments tend to be surrounded by crap. At best, it recalls Neat Beats' Cosmic Surgery with acoustic guitar loops (more than once from an Iron & Wine song, actually) and female vocal pop samples.

And I'm done! It was a good month, heard lots of great stuff (and some stuff that wasn't as impressive) and found some possible future favorites. Biggest surprises for me were probably Flowers From Exile, Astigmatic, and Schoenberg which all turned out to be excellent and favorites for this month. Most of the jazz was also very good.

Maybe I'll do something similar in the future, but I think I'm going to take somewhat of a break for the near future to focus on different things that keeping up with listening to new music. Maybe I'll pop my head in from time to time

I have all his solos, collaboration and lives except anything he has done after 2006, Live at SXSW, Merry Christmas, and a lot of his EP, but that's because they contain already released songs.
That makes up for 20 hours of lo-fi outsider godness.

Florida=Death - Tape Made of Tapes
[2010]

It's an amateurish collage of rock, drums and a couple samples put on tape. The rock moments and the true songs played here are their best, but i can't help but feel they've missed the concept they were going for. I guess they wanted this to be a big sampling chaotic mess but in the end it's kind of ordinary. This is mostly demos anyways so i shouldn't have expected as much as I did. It's that kind of band that would sound better live.

Dirty Three - Ocean Songs

This was some nice, crisp post rock that is perfect for cooler weather. The textures and soft, wandering melodies sorta surround you and overall Ocean Songs is just really fuckin comfy. If you're into post rock stuff like sigur ros you should definitely check this out. A couple issues that I had with it was that the melodies and songs were all so similar that they all sorta blended into one, which isn't always a bad thing but in the case of this album it made it feel a little too drawn out and same-y. This isn't a problem I have with the record though so much as a problem I have with a lot of post-rock in general so don't think too much of it. 7/10

I got super into Mushroomhead when I was a teen and basically only knew about music my sister was in to, like korn and ranmstein. I developed a real taste for them, especially once I got used to the singer. It's not groundbreaking or anything, but it's really fucking weird at times and it's fun. Good memories, too. Their album XIII is better, but has less quirks, less odd samples.
Good picks for Lupe, and fuck, those are my favorite extraordinary machine tracks, too!!!
And I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiments about ocean songs being homogenous, but it rewards you greatly with additional listens- when you know what's coming, you can really relax and drift in it. Deep Waters, the 16 minute track, is my favorite.

>Draath - Black Slumber
>orthodox black metal

A black metal album with some quasi-religious chanting + harsh vocals thrown into the mix. This can be pretty intense, heavy/threatening, and the vocals are evil. The chanting from the first track, I thought, was pretty engaging and made for a good opener. But aside from all that I think there could be more to it. This album has a great sound but not much in substance. I really couldn't tell that this was a orthodox metal without the title tracks vaguely suggesting that it was.

>Coil - Panic

Threshold Archives brings us the original 12” release with a good amount of unreleased stuff. The original 3 tracks are on here with Aqua Regis and Tainted Love cover being the obvious highlights of this more industrial side of Coil.

This is all followed by several tracks, previously released but in rather unnoticed. I do like the Untitled instrumental that only lasts half a minute. Creepy small interlude that reminds me of Sleazy’s Art of Mirrors release.

After that follows a bunch of previously unreleased takes. I dig the cello alt mix of Panic a lot. Very pretty-sounding stuff. Then there is this untitled bit on here that reminded me of my favourite from Horse Rotorvator Penetralia. An interesting thing is Sleazy’s vocal performance of Tainted Love closing the album off.

Good collection of tracks.

Melodic bm with prominent use of keyboards which are very enchanting. Unfortunately the rest is quite boring, particularly the riffs. The vocal performance is not very spectacular either.

>Angantyr - Hævn
Epic and relentless album. As a whole, it is a massive wall of sound, both very aggressive and beautiful. This intensity reminded me that of Weakling's Dead As Dreams. Too bad we don't hear more of the nice cello which opens and closes the album. The only problem is that the record is probably too long and not varied enough too keep you interested all the way through.

I just wish more people would commit to the /trad/ cause
>>
>>60201292
I'll try to do it more often. I need to properly divide my free time between exploring western art stuff, folk and jazz. Plus I still need to reserve a small bit for Jandek/Haino love.

or when people are shitposting about why /trad/ is a bad idea for a general, or when people are just using it as a sharethread.
it might be desu. we could move the whole operation to some other place.

it's just too small of a community rn to generate any ongoing discussion.
Hopefully within a few weeks some regulars besides Hampus, me, and the 2 or 3 anons will join in.

Today, I listened to the split tape of Final Exit and Napalmed.
Final Exit is a stupid band. Loud guitar and drums duo from Japan, these guys' mission statement has, for a long time, to keep their songs shorter than five seconds. HEre, they do the opposite but clearly decided not to use their brains. The whole thing could be an interesting grind EP in itself if it werent for the most ridiculous mixing you will hear. Ever.
Napalmed is a chesk noise duo making all kind of silly sounds with springs, scrapped metal, old automobile parts and distorsion pedals. Here, they also add in microphones and make a big, carefully mixed mess.
What a stupid split.
I <3'd it.

Don't go into this looking for another Jandek, as I did. Yet I really like what I did find; an eccentric vocalist / talented songwriter. This one could grow on me.

Interesting seeing something that far-out coming from Late-80's new wave. I've got my eye on this now.

backstab (in prose)
Зaтyхaниe - Зaтyхaниe
(якo e c киpилицaтa)

that's a hard one. what first impressed me was the tight composition of album. A quick intro, featuring slow, menacing, noise-heat, followed by a more or less a classical black metal piece, filled with fast drums and death hollows with the only difference is that the distortion of the guitar takes it up a notch, reaching a screeching feedback height, after which it returns for "breakdown", or just a change of pace, where the tone is now put through a rotary effect. Between this and the next black metal song, there is again a quick noisebient part, this time with some percussion, to drive the listener through the inertia of the last song.
So Кикимopa is a quick metal piece with nothing much to mention. The next is the opus of the album - the three minute дpeмoдeмoн (it could be translated as ancient demon, spelled without a pause). Which begins like a normal black metal song, but before the first tempo shift, makes a sudden jump into noise territory, marking the break with high-pitched screeching. The vocals are howling, sewed into the fury of drums and distortion, that I have to mention, really succeeds in sound, and gets close to the best moments of Darkthrone, without the killer riffs, of which by the way, there are none in this album.
The last track, my favorite (in which I can only recognize the word for woods), is a slow, richly textured noise outro, in which a doomy riff repeats a few times, closing the album.
Overall Зaтyхaниe, isn't a genius piece of work, or by far something exceptional when it comes to the use of the aesthetic it merges. Blacked noise not something new. But it manages to bring a nice balance of good noise and good metal, and to frame it some kind of composition which creates a feeling of pacing the album, which is something I didn't expected.

>Tubeway Army - Replicas

Vangelis-fueled synthpop record that heavily recalls science fiction that speculates about worlds where machines take over. Not that bleak, however, actually quite fun. There's some post-punky stuff going on here too, but the winners are the more synth-focused tracks, in particular "Are Friends Electric?" (a nod to Philip K. Dick) and "Down in the Park". Nice stuff, alfhough not super special. 7/10

>Martin Siewert/Martin Brandlmayr - Too Beautiful to Burn

EAi that is surprisingly beautiful at times, like the title suggests. "Source" starts off with a buzzing drone, soon joined by clicking and popping electronics, giving it a steady "beat" that disappears halfway throughout the track to make room for more ambient electronic parts, pretty nice. "Is This Love?", with its dreamy guitar plucking and crescending electronic buzz, is almost post-rocky in the way it builds up a calming atmosphere. "Axis", however, is less dynamic and as a result not as captivating, and the bookend tracks are more noisy and somewhat formless, killing the vibe of the album somewhat and in the end, dragging the album down. 6.5/10

>Natalie Rose LeBrecht - Warraw

LeBrecht's haunting vocals in combination with sparse acoustic guitar, sometimes backed by percussion, trumpet and whatnot, turn this album into one that sounds a lot like something that would be made by a girl who grew up in some sort of mystical forest. It's quite a nice album, however the songs seem very similar to me due to the limited amount of instruments used. There's also a track or two where LeBrecht seems to try a little too hard to be weird and the result, while not bad, is not up to par with the rest of the album. An enjoyable album that shines on the more song-like tracks and falls off just a little on the less song-structured material. 7/10

>Richard Youngs - Advent

This was very interesting. The three pieces on this album are all backed by a lo-fi piano loop and each track has something different to offer in addition. The first track starts off with a section where Youngs sings (his voice is reminiscent of Jim O'Rourke's imo), all drenched in an echo of sorts, after which only the piano remains. On the second track the piano sounds more brooding and is accompanied by the sharp sounds of oboes, one in each channel. The improvisation here is very impressionistic rather than virtuose, relying mostly on long, high notes, with the two oboes taking turns improvising. The result is very good. The final track is backed by noisy electric guitars, becoming an 18-minute long screeching noisefest. It's all very cool, unique minimalistic stuff, sadly it suffers from being too long for what it's worth. Nonetheless, worth checking out for anyone who is into experimental shit. 7.5/10
