>>63635526
Other guy is right, it's Matte Black. its the Cort MBC-1 model to be exact.

Also I've never had any issues hitting the volume knob, and I have sasquatch hands. If you think theres a problem you've obviously never played a stratocaster, or you think that's shit positioning.

as for the pickup layout it's great, go from clean to grit with a toggle. Gonna switch out the neck for a sustainiac eventually though....

>>63634919
I use GP 5.2, which is probably my favorite iteration. I got turned off on 6 WAY too fast - but i do use it to practice sometimes when I cant find a certain songs backing track.

fuck off back to NAMM with this shit. tones are a tool for expression. nothing else. you're free to continue trying to please other gear heads with "le organic tube warmth" but don't force that toxic mindset on others. there are beginners here ffs. the last thing they need is to end up like you

right they are, but do you think beginners will come far when they try to emulate these shitty distortion experiments?
>>
>>63637238
depends on what they want to express through their music
>>
>>63637264

even then, you can't just start with this stuff without some intermediate knowledge about how music works.

I mean, you probably could, but it would mostly be noise. Call me frumpy or quaint, but that's my stance on this. Theory and mechanical skill first, then the other shit on top.
>>
>>63637323
never too early to experiment. the longer you spend messing around with something, the better you get at it. right from the start, beginners should be learning all aspects of music (first and foremost) and the instrument (secondary), not just notes and mechanics.

>>63636890
you're welcome. It's actually a fairly common technique, usually just used on the kick drum. After all, drummers want to able to do the modern techno/dubstep/hiphop bass drum without actually using a keyboard. I've seen a few comparison videos and it's pretty interesting the different sounds you can get. Consider applying different distortions to snare, tom, cymbal, and kick, or at least kick. You may want to double the kick with something with plenty of bass, distorted or dry. Just don't overdo it hip hop kicks suck.

I'm going to buy a Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar, thing is the bridge is a piece of shit and everyone switches to the Mustang bridge, but someone's selling it with the Kurt Cobain Jaguar bridge, which isn't the regular Jaguar bridge.

Which one should I go for?

Imo those little things are a waste of money.

If you have the dosh get an amp head with a headphone jack and a small cab. That way you can practice with headphones on if for whatever reason you have to be quiet and play over the cab otherwise. Also this setup is pretty mobile if you don't have to take the cab with you.

Though those things (+ a cab) could get pretty pricey...

Maybe some other anon can give his input on this thing:

My Precision bass was knocked over bounced off the E tuning peg and then landed quite hard on the floor hitting the lower two machine heads. I'm really paranoid this might have messed up the truss rod or action. Is it possible that the truss rod could have been loosened this way? I can't tell by looking at it whether it's bowed.

>>
>>63640532
Open box is around $1.2k, only pickguard scratches if Music123 is to be believed.

To be honest, I don't know the prices of CS in the used market. I'm just interested in the features of the Elite series. I was previously going for an American Deluxe.
>>

>I hope you see the irony in your post.
I'm fully aware this is garbage.

>>63640191
Either go DI or go with a loud amp so you can gig.
>>
>>63640475
Just redo the neck relief in case. Since you're assuming the rest of the bass is set up right you can just adjust it to where you like the amount of buzz you're getting. Play all over the neck. Look up a video on how to adjust the rod, and use the right size allen wrench. Watch out for metric vs. imperial
>>
>>63640600
How did you find an open box Elite strat for $1.2k if they have just been released?

http://www.music123.com/guitars/fender-american-elite-rosewood-stratocaster-electric-guitar?rNtt=american%20elite%20stratocaster&index=4&condition=used#used

For example. I don't mind minor scratches for the discount. In the end shit gets scratched all the time and Fenders look nice even when road worn.

What cost efficient pedals can I get instead?
>>
>>63640736
Damn, that's a pretty sweet deal indeed then.

I still can't understand how the fuck did they manage to blemish a guitar that ships in a hard case and has just been released. But hey, lucky for you.
>>
>>63640475
Get a 0.0012 inch feeler gauge, capo the first fret, hold down the last fret and measure the clearance at the 7th to 9th frets. The feeler gauge should just slip easily under the E string. If it's too tight then slacken the truss rod an eighth of a turn at a time. If there's too much clearance then tighten the truss rod. That's all you need to know about truss rods.
>>
>>63640475

Writing music is the same as playing an instrument, it's a skill that you develop more as you get more experience. Start as soon as you know a couple of chords, you'll write garbage but you'll get experience.

>>63643030
I'm not sure how it would sound but yes, the actual guitar amp won't get damaged by the bass, it's just the guitar speakers that can't handle it. Bass speakers are high excursion speakers, that's the only way you can move enough air at a low frequencies. Guitar speakers are not, so playing at high volume will force the speakers to behave like bass speakers, which they can't so you damage the membrane and the actual speakers themselves.

I met a genuine blues lawyer recently. He was using public transport because his car was being repaired, he looked confused. Started talking to me because I had a guitar with me, within 10 seconds:
>muh 60s Gibsons
>muh old amps
>won't play with other people because he doesn't trust them around his gear
>"what, you use the rumble cabinets from Fender? Eww..."
While talking to me, a college student with visibly no money.

>muh everything old is better than anything new

But I think Strats sound kind of anemic for heavier music.

I like basses with 24 frets... To the point where I don't want to play any bass that has less. No, I'm not actually using them but the symmetry and the 2 full octaves just seem important to me. So, yeah. I'll only buy basses with 24 frets, how stupid is that?
>>
>>63645518
Not stupid at all, If I could afford to get another bass I'd make sure it had at least 24 frets, Michael Manring plays a fretless bass with a three octave fingerboard and he uses that whole board.

New af

Here's the axe I got. I've only been playing for a month and a half or so. I have two questions.

>where can I get some good /mu/ theory books/lessons/videos

I've been working with justin guitars basic intro book, I'd like to expand upon my knowledge and get some different new perspectives on how it's taught.

>looking at a fender champion 40w or 100w amp, thoughts? Comments? Concerns?

Money's an issue, I have a shitty 10w that I got with the Dean Exotica I got off Craigslist. Looking for something with some effects built in so I don't have to buy petals and shit. I want to be able to play a pretty broad scope of music without investing too much into a setup. Basically looking for a decent starter amp with some solid sound ranges built in.

Thanks in advance.
>>
>>63645653
I'm not actively using the extra frets, but being able to play something an octave higher with the exact same patterns and fingering or sliding an octave up from any note is just nice.
And it limits me in what I can buy. My first bass was a cheapo Yamaha, 24 frets, I like it. I bought a mim Fender later and had to sell it again because the lack of 2 full octaves bothered me that much. I simply won't buy any basses with less than 24 frets at this point.
>>
>>63645518

not stupid anon

i myself loathe guitars with 24 frets
>>
>>63644402
The VB2 is pretty sweet, has a great low-mid rangy sound it, paired with 15's it pack a punch. Probably would sound a lot better tho if i wasn't running the stock Ruby Tubes it has, they kinda suck. Thinking about swapping to JJ's soon, but hey, got it used for $500 and its only a year old with 30+ hrs on the tubes, not a bad deal at all.
>>
>>63645787

congrats on the axe, although I bought my first own guitar after I played over a year and a half. Bold move. You better stick to it man.

About the books - what do you wanna play? There are tons of books and videos, a good point to get into theory and mechanics would be the wikibooks about the pentatonic scales. Great stuff to get into soloing/improvising and you'll get a basic understanding of how chords and scales work together and you'll recognize the patterns in many songs. There is also stuff in the OP.

For the amp, get the roland micro cube. You can't go on a gig with it but it's pretty good for practicing and has tons of built-in effects and distortion.

Those little amps kick ass, exactly what I was looking for. Big range, cheap, easy to use and get started understanding effects with. Thank you kindly.

And as pertains to the theory, I'm already working on practicing scales, memorizing the fretboard/learned the octave patterns, memorizing the scales etc. I've got about 20 chords under my belt and am working on muscle memory and air changes. I'm starting to get into chord theory right now and learn how the scales and chords revolve around each other and work together. My goal is not not just watch youtube videos and copy musicians and instructional videos and what they do, I feel anyone can do that with enough repetition. I want to understand and know the guitar, jam and be able to not just play other people's stuff, but mess around and make my own. I guess I'm just looking for different twists on general music theory. Classical scores, Jazz, blues, classic rock, country, metal. Everything really. I've always loved the guitar and all the music you can make with it. I want to learn it all I guess.

But thank you kindly, I'll check the OP and wikibooks and keep doing what I'm doing, seems I'm on the right track as far as how I'm approaching the craft. Cheers.

Looking for a decent classical guitar that isn't made of fucking laminated wood. Literally every single guitar on GC or some other website says "maple" "mahogany" "spruce" "cherry" but its not the actual wood, its a laminated sub-par version of it, for example pressed woodshavings of that particular wood. I had this problem when buying a cello as well until I found an excellent Luthier whose focus is the cello and violin.

Unfortunately, I know of no such Luthier for classical guitar. I was looking for a classical guitar with strings that would be smaller than the normal size, a neck that would be thinner, with the strings ever so slightly closer together to accommodate my small hands. I considered buying a 3/4 size but I would prefer a 4/4 with a thin neck.

Could any anons help me out? I'm saving money for this and going through the shittiest job on the planet to make it happen and save money for college, of all the jobs I've worked I hate this one the most because of the people. Physical labor at a lower wage was better. Would prefer if the price tag was between $500-$3,000, if its cheap but of good quality even better, tight budget I know.

Currently looking at the American Guild of Luthiers for a proper guitar maker.

Let me preface this by saying I don't know shit about classical guitars, but:

Cordoba's fusion line has classical guitars with radiused fingerboards, C profile necks, and a nut width of 48mm as opposed to 52mm within your price range. They also have some non-"Fusion" cutaways with a 50mm nut width and flat fretboard. They should all have solid wood tops, but I think only the $900+ options have solid backs and sides. Not sure if they're what you're looking for, but they meet your thinner neck and slightly thinner string spacing requirements. Plenty of luthiers and such make "crossover" nylon strings as well, likely within your price range.

I think you're shit out of luck regarding thinner strings for classical, though. Nylon has to be fairly large.

I dont know if it was 9v or 18v or just 9 to 18v like I could use 11.24v or something
>>
>>63648124
>first result on google for the fucking amptweaker pedal

the pedal runs on 9 to 18 volts...
at 9 volts the distortion is a little out of control...
but it gets better at 12 volts and I can only guess as to the quality
at 13 to 18 volts as I havent tried that yet.

Nice choices bud. I've got a '76 4001 and I'm looking into getting a Jazzmaster. I'm looking to refret mine with something more substantial so I can throw roundwounds on it with out destroying the frets or fretboard.

Anyone know how the Classic Player Jazzmaster Special plays/sounds? None of my local music stores carry them. I heard they have hotter pickups, more modern neck profile, and the tail piece part is closer to the bridge for a better break angle or some BS.

My main focus is on trying to get Farfisa Compact Duo organ for a relatively low price right now though.

Could somebody help me clarify how a certain type of distortion is made, and what it's referred to?

I'm thinking Bill Kelliher in later Mastodon albums, some of Monster Magnet's heavier shit, Motorhead on Inferno specifically. That Fluff video where he demos a Verellen Skyhammer pedal going into a dual rec too. I've heard some people say those are just fuzzy, but I wouldn't specifically call it a fuzz tone, and fuzz pedals don't seem to help much for approaching it. It just seems like it comes across very thick and lush without being too inarticulate (hence not wanting to just go full fuzzy) and it layers with a bass really well.

It seems like a lot of the songs with this tone in it were made using at least three gain stages and that it's dependent on every component, but I can't figure out how much of what to dial in. I also gotta assume it's not gear specific, because there's a world of difference between artists who achieve it.

Any thoughts?

>>
>>63649476
Like anon pointed, you need to stick some amp distortion. The better recording tones are a little lighter on gain. You have to remember the mic is clear up on the cone a lot of the time when your ear is six feet back.

A bunch of amps sound on point straight out of the cabinet. Piling on a bunch of pedal dirt can pull you down. If you're in love with what the pedal does, try to use it as more of a boost than just flattening your signal with it.

So guys, I've recently been considering a mod to a guitar that would change the current pickups, two single coils with the same output, to two noiseless single coils with different outputs. I want to have a master volume and a simple 3 way pickup selector. Currently I have two volumes. I've noticed that when both are at full volume the tone is very different from other volume positions. It seems that the humbucking affect is giving me a muddier tone. My question is, will this sound still be available in the new pickup configuration? I know noiseless pickups can achieve the effect, but I wonder if they have to be at the same output. Is the tonal affect just what happens when output is basically equal? Or is it reliant on the volume knobs being full tilt? It's difficult for me to tell if I'm getting the effect at other positions or not. But there's always a noticeable "pulling away the blanket" effect when I start to turn one pickup down from both on full.
