I just received my pair of Audio-Technica M50x's today and I think the sound quality is great.

Side-thread: What does /mu/ think of burning in headphones? Is it just a bunch of horseshit?

Discuss.

Enjoy not being able to wear them for 20 minutes without terrible discomfort.

are they good or not? seriously considering buying them
>>
>>66480358
They don't cause any discomfort for me. You must have a strangely shaped head
>>
>>66480331
burning in headphones is absolute horseshit. Got some sennheiser momentums as a gift and they're pretty nice. Not so comfortable after a couple hours for me but that varies person to person.
>>
>>66480401
They're not bad but you can do better for the price, especially when it comes to comfort. If it's closed headphones you're looking for I'd say look no further than the DT770s, though they might be slight more expensive or even cheaper than the m50s depending on your country.

>>66480432
The earcups are tiny, once you've tried a proper sized pair of over ear headphones you can't go back.
>>
>>66480358
I agree, they are a little tight at first, but that's how they isolate the sound. If you just stretch it out for a couple of hours they become really comfortable.
>>
>>66480358
They kept causing me discomfort when I first started wearing them. Then I figured out I just had to move them about two inches forward on my head :o)
>>
>>66480401
OP here, they were tight at first, but after stretching them for a bit they became super comfortable. Like I said, the sound quality is great and I highly recommend.

Are these the best sub $20 headphones ever made?

Monoprice 108323 by the way. The isolation is decent but they are way, way too fucking loud.

I've had my MDRV6's for over a year, still pretty comfy, but for $45 when i got them it was a steal.

>>66480358
just replace the pads with velour. they're cheap and make a huge difference.

I got a pair of B&W P5s this week and I'm loving them. Sound stage isn't great but I paid $80 for them and they feel absolutely supreme. Definitely a gorgeous set, even if they're not quite the greatest thing I've ever heard. I'd highly recommend anyone looking for a set of closed headphones for less than $100 to check these out.

have HD 598s right now

very comfortable phones to wear, 10/10 in that regard. sound quality isn't bad by any means but desu I feel like something is missing, a certain sharpness or something. this is rather nitpickey though, overall the sound is good

Not if it's sufficiently cool in the room.
>>
>>66484211
The sound is veiled (a lot of senns are) and warm, being that mid is up and you lose sharpness.
I personally like it since I listen to folk, shoegaze, and other genres that are complimented by this.
Audio Technicias are a nice complimentary pair since they run sharp.

The m50s earcups are a proper size for me, maybe your ears are just oversized
>>
>>66480474
no man, the DT-770s just have massive cavernous cups. the M50 is normal sized.
>>
>>66483210
Yeah, but the M50x's come with 3 different type of interchangable cables and only one of which is coiled.

Nah, they're definitely on the small side for studio headphones, look at the headphones this chart, most of them have large cups meant to cover your whole ear with room to spare, especially as you go up in the price range. The m50s are practically on ears.
>>
>>66485347
dude that image is not to scale. the DT770s have abnormally large cups.
>>
What sort of headphones would you guys recommend for hooking up to your record player? I don't really have space for a whole stereo system. What do you guys think about bose? Or wireless headphones?
>>
>>66483376
IIRC, Audio-Technica pretty much focused on improving the padding material and comfort level of the M50x and did virtually nothing to the sound quality
>>
>>66483562
I bought a pair recently and they're pretty nice with a good seal and comfort. They're fairly bassy though. I'm thinking of trying some Yamaha EPH-100's so I'd take a look at those if you want something cheaper.
>>
I have sony mdr-zxwhatever's, they're not very comfortable but they sound astonishing. i'm legitimately hearing things i've never heard before, even though my last pair cost 2 or 3 times as much as these
>>
>>66480401
I thought they were great after using them for 3 years, but when i moved onto a pair of MSR7s i realized how bad the comfort is. The pads get really hard after a few years, and they are a bit small. Sound quality is great but you're better going with something else. The MSR7s have better sound quality and much better comfort; they are a good option if you are willing to pay the higher price.

neither

look at the op of this thread for some good info, also use head-fi and inner fidelity for reference:

>>
>>66485375
You can quite clearly see that most of the headphones are bulkier than the m50s, they were made partly with portability in mind, so they're smaller than your average studio monitors.
>>
>>66485010
Are they round though? Because nobody's ears are circular
>>
>>66483328
Wait, what are these?

A reminder though: you get what you pay for.
>>
>>66480331
They kinda feel uncomfortable when you take them off and a little bit when you put them on. Can't wear them with glasses on. Quality is amazing for the price. Downside for me is that it cancels outside noise too much, which is probably a good thing for most people.
>>
>>66480358
i own a pair and i find them the most comfortable headphones ive ever worn for long periods of time.
sound balance isnt perfect but for 150 what is
>>
>>66481351
aye mang, had those babies for 4 years during school. loved em. one time i called in the warranty because a cable failed in a month and they sent me a second pair of headphones for free.
