Well...that's a little bit of an asspull since the rock scene in the 80s was considerably more anemic than the 70s. REM wouldn't have been anything special in the 70s, but in the 80s it was almost a relief to for once have a band that wasn't manufactured MTV hairspray antics. I mean, they had talent, but the competition would have been a lot tougher if they'd been out 10 years earlier.

Man, they're all like him. They all love punk, New Wave, and pop stars and dislike metal and stadium rock.
I even have some old Britannica year books from the 80s and the music section mostly talks a lot about New Wave and other assorted hipster artists of the period. There's scarcely a mention of Van Halen, AC/DC, and Iron Maiden.
