It's his gimmick, and it fits with the persona he is trying to create through his music. Luckily, he doesn't rely on his costume as a crutch. The only reason why people thinks masks are cheesy is because most of the bands that do similar things (Slipknot, Insane Clown Posse, Steam Powered Giraffe) put their costumes over the quality of their music.
