Are noise instruments bullshit? By noise instruments I mean instruments designed with that express purpose in mind.

Noise is just bullshit in general

the Japanoise group Solmania makes a lot of custom built guitars for making noise with

Why?

That's cool, I should clarify though I'm talking about prebuilt shit.
>>66446145
They're cool but the actual musical versatility is what I'm questioning. It seems like you'd owe a lot of anything you make with it to the designer.
>>66446135
How can you be such a boring fuck? Guitars are literally the single most uninspired, ugly instruments.

A lot of noise/drone instruments are just crappy synths tbqh

I have a Standuino 3Pi drone Synth but I haven't really used it since I started building my own. It looks pretty but actual sound design on the thing is largely a guessing game. I do however have a number of modules made by the guy who made the dark interpreter in OP's pic that I consider indispensable.

His ERD is the go-to distortion for my power electronics.

They're sequencers if I remember correctly, but they're weird. They don't sequence linearly, instead they apply patterns dependent upon the patterns already applied and the settings of the knobs and buttons.

Not necessarily. Some of them are for sure though.

A few months ago there was that guy spamming vids of his home made noise instrument involving Arduinos and gongs or something, that was really fucking cool.
>>
>>66446692
Link to the ERD? Sounds cool

This pretty much. It reached a creative dead end a loong time ago. Timbral improvisation in general is pleb tier trash.
>>
>>66446093
Is this device related to the Black Death Noise Synth? Looks cool, desu

>Timbral improvisation in general is pleb tier trash.
Yeah if you're trying to have the biggest hipster dick on the board. Or you could lighten up and learn to enjoy a new genre!
>>
Making noise music with instruments specifically designed to make noise seems to defeat the purpose of making noise music
>>
>>66450932
>the purpose of making noise music
There are multiple possible purposes for making noise music
>>
>>66450907
>new genre

It's not about being a hipster, it's about not circle jerking to mediocrity. Timbral improvisation was significant in a time when it was considered avant garde, as a language it has changed very little in the last 60 years. Even rock and hip hop are more progressive when it comes to challenging the status quo
>>
>>66450932
>>66450965
There are so many different approaches to noise it's insane. An instrument specifically designed to make noise certainly doesn't defeat the purpose of anything, it just makes it easier
>>
>>66450801
>This pretty much. It reached a creative dead end a loong time ago.

Yep. Noise music evolved about as much as it could evolve by the late 80s/early 90s.
At this point it is one of the most redundant and creatively static genres I can think of. It doesn't have a shred of relevance in 2016.
>>
>>66451809
In order for the genre to move forward, it needs to be combined with other genres. Otherwise it will just stagnate.

I think that's why noise is so important in the first place: when artists like Sonic Youth combined dissonance and feedback with more accessible genres, it showed hidden potential and moved popular music forward. So for anything to progress or innovate in the current scene, I think this is what needs to happen.

Nobody here mentioned that meme genre though. I don't think anyone even thought of it.
>>
>>66452207
Noise walls aren't a meme, or at least they only are as far as literally everything else that is an established construct is you dumb cunt.
>>
hnw is great desu
>>
>>66452207
It wasn't mentioned but everyone automatically thinks of HNW whenever noise is mentioned. There is much more to the genre.
>>
>>66452122
>so daft that when people call noise creatively dead and static, you think they are literally talking about HNW

Lmao. This level of cluelessness regarding noise music and its precursors' history is one of the main things responsible for turning the genre into the circular and irrelevant subcultural circlejerk that it has become in the first place.

Pro-tip though: endless variations on a theme and attempts at experiment executed with no technique, no discipline and no awareness of their contextual fit into the bigger picture of the genre and style they belong to does not equate development or evolution.
>>
>>66452628
>everyone automatically thinks of HNW whenever noise is mentioned.

No they don't.
>>
>>66452172
damn I really want one of those ERD ones
>>
>>66452757
Maybe not on /noise/ per se, but most people do (in my experience anyway). Besides that, everyone in the thread was talking about and referring to the genre as if that was its only form.
