Sound design is pretty flat and dry, don't be afraid to make your IDM freakier, and when your programming those little IDM percussion freakouts try messing with stuff like pitch and velocity and a little less quantize to liven it up a bit

Use the latest Fruity loops studio. Abelton has a way to blandand drab UI to get the grooves out
>>
>>66450371
If you wanna get really serious learn something like Ableton or I guess ProTools, also helps if you know the basics of music theory.
Else, if you are still learning theory and want an easier route, FL Studio is good. I still use it despite 3 years of /prod/'ing, then again I am not making money yet and I still suck balls, so take that the way you want.
>>
>>66450371
use whatever the most popular ones there are to start, that way you can get into it faster, because there are more resources online to help you navigate them, then look around at other smaller programs if you want, either way it's not a big deal, there is no objective best (FL Studio comes pretty damn close though)
>>
>>66450748
Also, what would you like to make, if it will be predominantly synths I would steer away from FL Studio unless you want to do a shit ton of sampling, I rarely use samples, and usually have 14+ synths in a song, so it gets a little cpu intensive and lags the program, audio gets a little choppy while playing in the DAW, but exported it sounds like it should. A question to anons that don't use FL, are there programs for what I do? I honestly wish I did more research before buying FL.

I'm pretty sure that's more of an issue with your computer and not FL

The synth that comes in at 12 seconds sounds out of tune with the rest of the song. Sounds flat to me.
>>
>>66451092
My CPU tops at 50% when running one of the intensive songs, it seems that FL is only getting overloaded. idk, might just be what you said.

I have no idea what happened to me yesterday but this is by miles better mixing than any of my previous works. Melody is just an improv, I was mainly focused on drums.

https://clyp.it/ymlduyb1

How can I still make it better? Prod became so comfy now, I can't even describe it.

Is it better now? As I said before, I'm actually pretty bad at hearing this, but I think my ears are improving.

https://clyp.it/bwabsktq

>>66452411
Are you implying that it sounds like it is from a Japanese cartoon? I really wonder how do I even acomplish that sound so often. I mean, the melody is from Selena Gomez, but I added the funky synth on top of it for the lulz.
>>
>>66452873
a lot better
>>
>>66452945
Cool, yeah, I fixed some smaller stuff and completely removed one sub bass, I guess it was too much.

I am just wondering, does this previous version from today sound better in some terms?

https://clyp.it/uzj2yj3j

I like the hihats more, I have to figure out how to bring them back now, because I have added a lot more sounds.

But all in all, I'd appreciate the feedback if there is something more to do with this or not. I mean, I've started with this, yesterday:

https://clyp.it/dsaka4x3

Even if it is still bad, I can see how much I improved, and I want to continue doing it.

After this I'll have to practice with synths and basses.
>>
>>66453064
the original is a little more interesting, and the second is more energetic. i don't really have a preference for one in particular though

ctrl + n is your friend - it saves whatever you're working on as a new version, so that if you ever want to go back to an older version of whatever you are working on, the old project file is still there.

in this particular case, since you probably can't undo all the way back to when you changed the hihat pattern, you're out of luck, gonna have to put it in manually
>>
>>66453499
I actually have a few versions saved, I do it often, so everything is probably fine.

But it wouldn't matter that much anyways, since I did this just for a practice, I never spent so much time mixing drums and wanted to see what I can accomplish.

Thanks for the feedback, I honestly have no idea how to fix this tho, I didn't notice a problem before but I've been messing around with my synth for a while now trying to find a note that sounds better but nothing seems to sound any better or worse to me. Is my ear just untrained or is this just a matter of preference?
>>
>>66454271
>I've been messing around with my synth for a while now trying to find a note that sounds better but nothing seems to sound any better or worse to me. Is
It's not the note, it's out by a microtonal amount (say you play one key and then the key next to it, somewhere in the middle is where that synth is tuned).
Find the offending synth and look for something labelled "fine" or fine tune, or something like that. It will want swinging to the right a little as it sounds flat to me.
If you get stuck, take screenshot of synth and post here for us to have a look.
>>
>>66454319
Ahh I see, yeah im dumb. Thank You for the info, I'm gonna redo that part.

One more thing, most of the sounds in the song were the same synth. Do you think the poor tuning is effecting anything else?
>>
>>66454750
>One more thing, most of the sounds in the song were the same synth. Do you think the poor tuning is effecting anything else?
Is this a midi line recorded and playing the synth or did you record it as a wav?
If it's a wav it's maybe simpler to re-record it, but there are plenty of plugins which will shift the pitch for you.
>>
>>66454806
for the intro part, for example, I recorded 15 or so notes from the synth into an audio track, then chopped the notes separately into a midi instrument if that makes sense.
>>
>>66455051
In that case repitch the synth to be in tune with the rest of the track, record those samples again and copy them over the old ones and all should be well.

Hey, awkward bullshit guy, I've been checking your stuff and am pretty impressed.

hi guys

i'm trying to really study structure and melodic progressions within songs

like, i can make a cool intro/build up but then i'm lost when it comes to chorus and creating a basis for the entire song. i want to have my entire song catchy and great, but rn i only really have a few cool sections. or maybe i'll make the first 30 seconds of a song and then i'll be lost and not really know where my song is supposed to go.

Could anyone give me some advice on song writing?

I feel terrible because my sound design/mixing game is actually where i want it to be, but the composition aspect is a bit tricky for me.

not just ur kick n 808 tho...

eq ur synth / drum / sample tracks too..

make sure nothing interferes with that bassy low end!!!

u gotta sacrifice... same ur mid and high end

experiment. maybe if you put that synth that is in the Mid into the High end , u'd be able to hear more detail and open things up more???

really mixing is so cool to me bc there are so many variables and it really makes ur track One Of A Kind

As we've said in Prod before, each to their own, but even Deadmau5 says he uses FL studio from time to time due to the piano roll being a lot easier. The thing about Ableton VS FL is that people get pissy about "LOL YOU ONLY MAKE SHITTY HOUSE MUSIC LIKE AVICCI AND BASSHUNTER" granted, that music is fun to make but it's boring to people like us.

FL just makes it easier to use, OH NO IT'S EASIER TO USE what will we ever do.

I'm not going to say, "FL STUDIO MASTER RACE!" but I will say, if I'm going to use a studio, FL is just easier.

accept LMMS. We can make fun of it.

people dont really buy the music

its works for them though because they get booked on festivals around the world and get to live it up

New to /prod/, but I really want to get into synthesizers, especially making music like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQewpO9zEA0

I was looking at a couple of entry levels synths, specifically:

Roland JD-XI
Moog Mother 32

Can I get at least a sound like the above video on both? Or is that kind of sound restricted to Moog instruments?

Also, Sub 37s are sexy AF.

one of the many rules of making music
DONT BUY ANYTHING YOU'RE NOT READY FOR.
Buy cheap, cause if you're not sure you're gonna be into this and it's just a hobby like most, you never know how long it's going to last.
>>
>>66460841
just use software synthesizers until you get different types of synthesis

like crack them or use free vst

then buy hardware synths

thats what i would do
>>
How the fuck do I make synths?
I mean, I know how to do drums for a track and how to do some mixing, but when it comes to synths I have no idea what to do

get a korg minilogue, it blows both of those out of the water in terms of versatility and price.

Anyone else have experience with NI's Solid Bus Comp? I like it for how simple it is, and therefore use it for most stuff. According to the manual, it can be used for everything, not only buses. With only attack, release, threshold, make-up and ratio buttons, it keeps my process simple and transparent. I'm not really at the level where I can tell the difference between compressors yet though. Anyone know if using this compressor is bad for single instruments?

try to bring a light, bassy synth early on (preferably from 0:11/0:12), and make this harmonize with the lead track. let it build up as you build up starting at 0:49. Just another layer to add another dimension to it.

>>66464389
I like it, but it is kind of boring IMO, sounds like great background music, for the /x/ tier youtube videos that I like to watch. The native fl plugins would probably work just fine for making neat sounds, but sylenth is fun too. And for sound design learning , I would just open two instances of the same vst synth, and initialize one of the vst synths, and copy over every setting until you have made them both sound the same, that way you can see what's going on, and what the original patch writer did

>>66464430

asking this in /gg/ and here

I just got a 6i6 audio interface. I want to send the Stereo Mix recording from my PC into the 6i6, so I can monitor it while I play my instrument.

Can I do this with just the USB cable between my PC and the 6i6, or do I need to ALSO connect my PC into the 6i6 1/4" input jack? That is pretty fucking gay if I need two cables between my PC and the audio interface.
>>
>>66472276
Nope, just one USB is fine. That's what the bigass monitor knob is for.

I wouldn't ask /gg/ too much technical stuff. Some may know a thing or two about digital audio, but I've seen some memeworthy misinformation too. At least they're miles better than /g/

If you are, you can't record in one program while listening to audio in another.

I don't use Scarlett mix control, but there should be a fader for your daw, check and see if that's getting any signal.
>>
>>66472682
Well, I managed to pull off what I wanted using my DAW.

I have a track, with STEREO MIX as the input, and the 6i6 set as the output.

This is working. There's like a half second of latency between when the audio plays and when its coming out of my real speakers, though. Is this expected?

I set Ableton to use the ASIO driver, which reduced the "Overall Latency" to 9ms (is this good?)

The only problem is, I can't find a way to use my PC's stereo mix in Ableton now. There's no way to send Billie Jean from Youtube into the headphone monitoring of my audio interface, as far as I can tell.

I've been listening to Hip Hop music all my life, I have really amazing beat ideas in my head however I have no clue how to get started on beat production. Can someone help me begin?
>>
>>66474098
I'm not completely sure of this, but I think maybe it's the case that using ASIO with Focusrite is better than using ASIO4ALL without that kind of sound device. When I use A4A myself, it can use one piece of software with sound at a time. It's a real hassle, and not something that seems viable for me, since I tend to have Youtube, a scorewriter and a media player open while mixing. However, this was completely not a problem when I switched to the ASIO on my Focusrite.
>>
>>66474098
>>66474902
However, that doesn't seem to be the case at all with you.

1. don't buy shit you dont know how to use
2. usb goes to pc and interface
3. install drivers, most morons don't do this
4. use the fucking headphone jack to listen through headphones, use outputs to listen through speakers
5. to use scarlett mix control without a DAW click on routing preset and choose zero latency tracking
