Avant-Garde doesn't mean "new and hard to get into".
It's a very specific historical category that implies
-having a program (and if possible a manifesto)
-being organized into a movement (rather than being an isolated fuckhead)
-trying to make art progress beyond its former boundaries
-trying to alter society and culture through art
-trying to take over, reform or overthrow the current cultural institutions
There isn't enough of a grey area between avantgardism and the rest of culture to define a "weird frontier" and experiment in it.
Could you even mention ONE avant-garde movement in contemporary music?
