they're probably too big but pavement could be
Huh maybe the stooges. Nobody gave a shit about them when they were around but the people who bought their albums went on to big things. Same couldbe said for velvet underground. But honestly its probably the old blues and folk guys

Depends on your definition of Cult.

>>66437784
There are both good contenders, they throw huge festivals with massive audience with very little mainstream radio attention
>>66438596
>velvet underground
>cult
No nigga. I've heard them on the radio hella times too. They're about as mainstream as it gets
Rush.
No contest.
>>66437737
grateful dead, no doubt.
>>66438954
but it took them a long time to get to that point.. Loaded and Transformer are when they went beyond the crazy cult band and became radio-friendly.
>>66438977
Damn how the fuck did we miss this.
>>66438921
Immensely dedicated fan followership, bordering on a religious following.
The kind of band or artist people would go to another country just to see.
I'd say The Fall or OP's Big Star
>>66438977
Tom Sawyer was a pretty big radio hit. Most their songs are just too long for the radio, same with all prob.
>>66439004
I've heard Sunday Morning and White Light White Heat on the radio before.
they're one of 'em
>>66439079
On a top 40 radio station?
>>66439036
Moving Pictures was a hit album but their best work is their really obscure prog stuff from the 70's like 2112 and Hemispheres.
The got commercial fame for a small time in the 80's but nowadays the only Rush fans that remain love ALL of their stuff. Not just Tom Sawyer.
They were always (and still are today) shit on by the music snobs at Rolling Stone but their work is absolutely astounding.
As Jack Black put it so eloquently "They really offered something in rock that was in short supply."
>>66439155
> "They really offered something in rock that was in short supply."
Yes, a perpetual need to switch radio channels whenever that shit came on in the 80's.
Good riddance, and Jack Black can suck a fat one.
>>66439155
>>really obscure prog stuff from the 70's like 2112 and Hemispheres
>2112: triple platinum
>hemispheres: platinum
boy stop
>>66439252
Go up to anyone on the street and ask what they think of 2112 and they won't know what the fuck you're talking about.
>>66439248
Don't speak of The Holy Trinity that way.
The Strokes
Here's a real answer
>biggest cult artist
is there any other answer?
