Hey, I know this is Guitar/Bass and stuff but I just bought this. I've never played Piano before, but I've been a jazz guitarist for a few years now and I'm buying a piano to learn composition.

It should be lots of fun. I start lessons at the same place I took guitar at for years here in a couple weeks.

Super excited!
>>
>>66413814
nice, looks like a sick keyboard (tho i know nothing about them besides how to play piano). piano definitely adds a ton to your musical abilities; from someone who started both at the same time if you really want to get good at composition then you should retrain your brain to think of notes/scales/modes as laid out on a keyboard instead of the way you probably traditionally do laid out on a fretboard. also jazz piano is fucking impossible
>>
so I spilled something highly alcoholic on my guitar
(nitro finish) and it melted away some of the finish and lacquer

any way to repair this without having to completely refinish the guitar from ground?

Seymour Duncan rails.
Neck and bridge could be cool or hot rails. Middle is a vintage rails.
>>
>>66414571
They're single coil humbuckers, essentially.
Neck is a Cool Rail which gives it a really nice clean tone. Middle is a Vintage Rail which gets a nice classic rock tone. Bridge is a Hot Rail that gets me a really solid lead tone and is better for heavier music. They're made by seymour duncan.

This is what the bridge pickup sounds like btw

It's fairly noticeable isolated if you run direct but once it's in a mix it's pretty hard to spot assuming people aren't dialing them in for that ultra-tight sound a lot of guys use them for.

If you're running it through a tube poweramp and cabinet the only thing obvious is the attack is bizarrely immediate.

I've been considering repainting this black Squier Stratocaster II that I've just bought to a brighter color, maybe a pastel pink or a white instead of the black that it is already and I wonder what I'd have to do
>>
>>66416794
Just scuff up the paint with 320 grit sandpaper until all the gloss is gone (no shiny spots) you want it to have a matte finish. Then spray about 3 coats of primer, wait for it to dry, then spray the color of your choice, 1 can should be enough wetsand with 400-2000. Then as much clear coat as you want.

I recommend duplicolor paints and minwax clear coat if you can get them where you are. Otherwise look for lacquer based paints (easier to work with). Pretty easy.
>>
>>66416867
alternatively you can also use a fast drying enamel paint (just build it up alot) and skip the clear coat. Just buff the enamel paint to a gloss.

I enjoy playing the electric guitar from time to time, have a pretty wide selection of pedals and I like shoegazy walls of sound, but I have one problem.
I rarely play because Im afraid that someone will hear. I play at irritatingly low volumes and if I do turn up the volume, I dont play for a long time. I dont think anyone is going to get annoyed since I have two young people living on both sides, now upper or lower "floors" on this type of a building. I never hear their noises through walls or anything either, but I just cant get over the spook factor. For 3-4 years I've been afraid as FUCK about making a ruckuss. How the HECK do you get over it?

Have had one of these pedal boards for 16 years, the carpet inside is dog shit. Rip it out all the way to the base board and lay down some industrial strength velcro from homedepot. Once you do that their worth a damn. Never busted open on me. Make sure the weather stripping doesnt come off those. That'll help with moisture and temperature.

Seems like most recommended beginner basses start out at $350. I'm not sure if I'll even like playing an instrument, but I want to give it a shot. Are there any budget bases around $250 that'd you'd recommend to a newbie? Buying used is out due to my inexperience and not knowing anyone that plays and can help me find a halfway decent instrument. Thanks.
>>
What is a decent acoustic guitar around $500 NZD? I've been casually learning for the past 6 months but I feel if I learn to play the song I'm practicing perfectly I'll be able to justify buying a better guitar.
>>
Can someone explain capos to me
>>
>>66419213
It shortens the length of the strings by clamping behind a fret which makes all the strings higher pitched. If you're thinking in terms of tablature, the fret that's capo'd is now 0, and the rest of the frets going up are numbered relative to that. The frets behind the capo towards the nut don't matter anymore
>>
>>66419213
You clip it on any fret and it barres it off at that fret.

I want to add a Precision pickup to my ray34 bass. The thing is that I want the P pickup to go to the same jack output as the other pickup but I don't want the P going through the internal pre-amp.
Is this possible?

in the cases which you need to play an open note that's in a different tuning from the one you're in.
For exemple if I need to play 0707xx in E standard, but I am tuned to D standard, then I'll put a capo on the second fret and play 0909xx

The woods are sourced from different places (only matters if you believe in tone wood or you are concerned with weight), the electronics in the epiphone will be worse (sort of subjective) and generally the Gibson will be made to higher quality control standards.

You can get a used gibson sg for really cheap, one of the only gibson guitars I would ever consider buying.
>>
>>66420334
I put gibson 496R and 500T in my epiphone explorer, it went from "cheap sounding guitar" to "pretty decent sounding guitar"

never laid my hand on an actual gibson explorer though so there might still be a margin

A good shop will be able to spot refin nitro. Its far easier to work with than urethane (which is also why the solvent nature of the alcohol fucked it up). The acetone in the nitro will melt the old and new finish together. What color is the guitar. Did it just take the clearcoat off?

Protip: artists fixative in a spray can is just clear nitrocellulose lacquer. $5 as opposed to $15 from reranch.

A lot of it these days is acrylic, which is no good on nitro.

Ok. I guess the place by me only has the traditional nitro. Also I've sprayed clear acrylic over solid nitro colors several times. It works fine. Do you finish guitars?
>>
>>66422302
I've ruined a couple of Project guitars in my time experimenting, and I can do a reasonable French polish, but I tend to leave my good guitars alone.

Acrylic over nitro is chemically compatible, but the main point in having a nitro guitar is the way it wears - acrylic spoils that.
>>
>>66422643
Agreed. The only times I've done the acrylic was on a couple top only refins. I wouldn't want to spray a neck with the stuff. Definitely doesn't feel as nice as nitro

I own a Fender Stratocaster, 1993, MIM.

This dude wants to trade me for a Squier Jaguar. Brand new, just bought it, he just wants a mim strat

The only thing stopping me from trading is the fact my guitar has SO MUCH sentimental value.

>>
>>66426553
It's not shit, washburn make solid guitars. You shouldn't consider a tremolo unless you're going to use it extensively. Buying a guitar without a tremolo does not limit or handicap you, a tremolo only adds a very small range of extra sounds you can bring out and you're not gonna be missing it unless you do lots of lead type playing and want to extend what you can pull off very marginally.

If you've already got a guitar without one and want a tremolo because you're looking to be able to do tremolo exclusive things, go for it. If it's your first proper non cheap piece of crap guitar, don't bother, it really doesn't add as much to your playing as you think it will.

It's finally happening guys, a pickup winder is challenging Dimarzio's longstanding trademark on double cream pickups.

In case you're unaware, Dimarzio trademarked cream pickups several decades ago and they have been serving cease and desist notices to any manufacturer that makes them. Someone is finally stepping up to the plate.

The basis behind the case is the illegitimacy of Dimarzio's trademark - over two dozen IP attorneys and professors, including the attorney who examined Dimarzio's 2005 trademark claim on chrome bobbins (which was denied) agree that the trademark should never have been granted in the first place. Specifically, it violated the functionality doctrine: It there is any functionality to the requested trademark, either utilitarian or aesthetic, that contributes to the commercial viability of a product (rather than a brand) then the trademark is not to be granted.

UPS can trademark their brown vans because the brown has no functionality beyond identifying the brand. But John Deere could not trademark green farm equipment, as farmers preferred to color coordinate their equipment with their green John Deere tractors.

Dimarzio's cream humbuckers fall into the latter category. Smaller pickup manufacturers are hurt by Dimzario's trademark because the cream pickup is a product in and of itself chosen for its aesthetic rather than merely being representative of Dimarzio's brand. Dimarzio's official literature even says that the standard color of their humbuckers is black rather than cream.

Dimarzio really doesn't have a leg to stand on in this. The only reason they got the trademark in the first place is because nobody challenged it, because no other manufacturer thought it would actually go through. A huge mistake that has cost the pickup industry quite a bit of money.

Hopefully this turns out the way it should.

Yeah I've gone through quite a few on youtube, but now that I have a looper, I like to build backing tracks myself to play over -- I'm just not good/creative enough to make my own, so I'm looking for someone else's to steal. Pretty much anything with a decent chord progression and bass line will work. Any suggestions?
