speed metal in the late 70s and early 80s (prior to thrash and power metal) was essentially faster NWOBHM.
Thrash metal branched off of speed metal with a sound influenced by the riffing style of harder punk rock and much more extreme hardcore in the early-mid 80s.
Power metal branched off of speed metal with a much more emphasis on melodious lead guitars and a much more grander, "powerful" sound in the early-mid 80s.
After power metal and thrash metal became dominant subgenres, speed metal generally just became faster metal that's not as bombastic and melodious as power metal or not as thrashy and aggressive as thrash metal. A lot of the time speed metal is essentially power-thrash now.

If you want transcendence, go listen to Midnight Odyssey's "Funerals from the Astral Sphere". It's long as fuck, true (it's a double album), but it has a lot of stellar ambient. Much more ambitious than Liturgy, and not retarded.
