Julia Wolfe is awesome.

Here's some more stuff if you want to check it out:
-A lot of the stuff that the Bang on a Can All-Stars do is cheerful or goofy. Check out some of their albums.
-Schnittke has a lot of pieces with humorous components, like the concerto grosso.
-Penderecki's Cappricio for Violin and Orchestra is just Penderecki making fun of himself (read the silly specifications he puts in the orchestration page of the score if you don't believe me).
-A lot of Terry Riley's stuff is cheerful.
-Some of Stockhausen's pieces, like In Freundschaft, Michaels Riese and Sirius have a lot of silly and happy sounding passages.
-Become Ocean and a lot of John Luther Adam's stuff is cheery, I guess.
-Easley Blackwood's microtonal etudes have a lot of cheeriness to them
-I've always found that late Schoenberg, like the 4th quartet and the piano concerto to be pretty cheery. Ode to Napoleon Bonaparte also has a serious, but happy mood. Others are free to disagree with me on this one.
-Charles Ives, especially the symphonies and string quartets are full of musical jokes.

Well, firstly don't worry about being "interesting" when picking your audition piece.

In general, the auditions will be evaluated by the faculty of the instrument you played. It's better to choose from standard repertoire , because then it's easier to hear how good you are or aren't.

>combining tracks
They're having you mail in preauditions on instruments? I didn't have to do that when I applied. Anyway, again, I'd recommend against it. They only other musician playing on your audition recordings should be a professional pianist, and you should record both you and your accompanist at the same time.

Finally, I *highly recommend* speaking to a guitar or saxophone teacher about the audition. I also recommend having a composition teacher look over your portfolio. You can find one by contacting a professor at your local university.

Finally, last piece of advice:
If you're applying to schools in the US, apply to Bowling Green State University. They're not a great music school but they have an absolutely amazing composition program and it's really easy to get into. It's the best safety.

Real talk, does anyone else think the trivialization of Scarlatti is partially done to assuage Bach's autism?

If you ignore the more musical composers you can attribute Bach's hardtack aesthetic to "the rigors of his time" rather than his own sterile mind.

No, the trivialization of Scarlatti is because he could only write for one instrument and did a fairly mediocre job at that.

Upboated kind sir.

>the trivialization of Scarlatti is partially done to assuage Bach's autism
There's been no "trivialization", Scarlatti hasn't been talked about as much in the literature because it's exceedingly difficult to write about him. The man left almost no trace of his existence in Spain, so our biography of his most fertile period is basically blank. None of his sonatas survive in autograph, and all we have are two huge volumes copied by scribes whose connection to Scarlatti is uncertain. A consequence of this is that creating an chronology based on external evidence is impossible, and we have no idea how he developed, if at all. The sheer number of the sonatas and their stylistic diversity also presents a daunting barrier, and the fact that they have no obvious precedents nor major influences doesn't help. Writers are used to use the Canon and a composer's place in the Canon as a guide, so they're lost when it comes to a composers who is so completely out of the Canon such as Scarlatti. Finally the rise of nationalism didn't really help Scarlatti's case since the Italians treat him as a Spaniard, and the Spanish always thought he was more Italian, so he ended up getting rather neglected by scholars from both countries.
>>
>>66402084
I did not mention Bach in my post.

Scarlatti is pretty much mediocrity incarnate and did nothing notable on a contemporary level nor does he hold well in retrospect. His minor notoriety status is held thanks to pianists who used him as a showcase for the concert hall. Which is ironic, because his music sounds like garbage on the piano and is distorted far beyond its original conception to the point where it's almost a case of self-parody. Some part of me wonders if these pianists were trying to defame Scarlatti by playing his works on the piano, but, the public--being the moronic hodgepodge that they are--bought into it.

Why would you listen to pic related though? What is the appeal?

I hate Beethoven's music just as much (if not more) but at least I understand why he made it and why people listen to it. He was a spiritual philanthropist and his music was a soup kitchen for those lacking higher human faculties. Jigging it the apex of many people's lives, they deserve a patron saint.

But Bach? Just...why?

aye it's not my fault you can't enjoy the finer things in life, faggot.
>>66417866
Ah, one of my favorites... I suppose I should clarify a bit of what I know, huh?

I mean I'm basically looking for things similar to Dido's Lament, Mass in B Minor - 'Agnus Dei,' 'The Fairy Queen, O Let Me Weep,' Lacrimosa, Gelido in ogni vena, etc

Although not particularly dark or melancholy... I do really, really, really love when composers for weeb games have an aria or chorus sung like Hullez Gran Cathedral, Aura's Theme, etc or some of the stuff done by Yuki Kajiura for certain anime. I also love the aria done for Blood+ for Diva otherwise called Diva's Theme.

So if y'all know anything in the vein of that then hit me with it, please.

I generally don't change the tagging for any CD's I buy

although i prefer having the performer as the artist, because most of the time I know who composed the piece from the album title, whilst I probably wouldn't recognize who performed it. This is especially important if I own multiple recordings of one thing.
