If you don't get permission to remix someone and you sell it, it's illegal and they can sue you for the money you made using their property. Not sure about free-release remixes since I don't know if there's precedent for anyone suing over it.
Vaporwave can easily be covered by the whole 'parody.' When vaporwave first pushed off a lot of artists kept chanting that this is a parody of capitlistic future.
No music company has attempted to go after this since it will only result in a good lawyer just hiding behind parody, and causing every vaporwave artist to do the same.
The only time a big artist got legally threatened was Saint Pepsi, and that was from Pepsi Co, for obvious reasons. He didn't mind too much since he was already transforming into the faggot he is today.
