Is Mark being sarcastic this entire album? I know it's a long time ago but today all he does is shit on hipsters for being sad about their relatively comfortable American lives. Lord Kill the Pain seems to be obvious satire but even the rest of the songs are overly melodramatic and mention kanji and other stuff.

maybe it's some of that new sincerity stuff, but who knows dawg?
>>
>>66378182
He grew up, and although he had legitimate problems at the time he realized "wow, I was a whiny asshole"
>>
Is there any reason behind the references to Japan in the album? That kanji line, Japanese to English, "or wake me in Japan, I want to speak a new language"
>>
>>66378182
>but today all he does is shit on hipsters for being sad

he always did it tho

and i don't think he's sarcastic on records
he just sad depressed hick but too ashamed to accept it
>>
>>66378309
A lot of young guys see Japan as an ideal place, and this is really far from new.
>>
>>66378182
This is a good question actually. Maybe he had a different perspective on things in his early-mid twenties. I find 24 to be genuinely crushing, and it makes me think that there's no way he is being sarcastic.
>>
He just grew up.
>>
>>66378309
desire for new experiences
>>66378182
nah, he's a guy that had a drug addiction before he was 14. He's genuinely a sad human being.
>>
>>66378542
Desire for new experiences could just as easily explain wanting to travel to Valencia or Venice. Japan comes with different connotations.

>>66378182
>satire
You're missing the point
>>

Thanks for clarifying it smart guy!

He wrote those albums years ago. Most fans remember this work the most, but even later RHP records had a less dreary tone to them. I don't think Mark was being sarcastic then, but I do know he's a bit tired of his fanbase for expecting more dreary music.

He loves anime

What drug addiction did he have?

quit satirizing my post
>>
>>66380246
Alcohol or pills, I think. It isn't all that clear but Sundays and Holidays is about how his mother drove Mark into a hospital to rehabilitate himself.
>>66379864
Those are still in the western cultural hemisphere. Japan feels familiar culturally but still very removed from America.

I don't think so

>>66383048
Oh man you got me! Isn't irony confusing? It's just masquerading how sad our lives truly are. Currently writing a book about it, I'm 1500 pages in, it's called Infinite Jest. Sounds great, eh?
>>
>>66383091
He can't even look her in the eye, what the hell happened to him in that period?
>>
>>66383096
Still hiding behind post irony and now its turning into passive aggresivnes
>>
>>66383132
Dude, you can't even say what "post irony" means. It's the internet, of course there's gonna be humor. The only person that's bitter and trying to stray off topic is you. What's up with that?

he was in japan when he was a kid but most importantly he dated an exchange student from japan for a while

this album doesn't go into depth that much about Mark himself in comparison to the rollercoaster / bridge album and Songs for a Blue Guitar.

Listen to his discography from the beginning and you will see a transition in his lyrics and vocals between Songs for A Blue Guitar and Ghosts of the Great Highway. Especially during live performances, he started to go off on people during the 2000s. I believe when he finally accepted that even though he pretends to be high class San Francisco, he really is just some redneck from Ohio. By Universal Themes, he started to embrace or at least acknowledge his upbringing and detests the new crowds he has "white guys in sneakers".

Tl;dr... Mark becomes an old man and if you listen to every album he has made, you clearly see the transition.
