the instrumental is the sparsest yet it's the longest song on the album. It features beach boys harmonies that we've heard millions of times already from these guys. It's like they stripped away any sense of psychedelia they had left. Most songs on the album are a lot more interesting.

The sparse instrumentation is sort of the point, though. They drew inspiration from cubism and that's how it translated into the sound. It's fine if you don't like that, just understand why they did it

Kinda agree here. This was the first animal collective song I've heard that I thought really didn't sound like the band at all.
I'm a huge Animal Collective fan myself, and I honestly really enjoyed the record. Yes people are turned off by the poppy nature of the record, but I enjoyed it quite a lot and really enjoyed the great vocal interplay and melodies that Avey and Panda present throughout.
I also really enjoyed the use of the synth sounds and all of the colorful samples and rhythm patterns throughout. The album does a remarkable job of doing exactly what it set out to do.
For my money, tracks 1-5 are becoming one of my favorite stretch of tracks in their whole canon.

I've listened to merriweather and strawberry jam, both don't really do anything for me. i can tell they're obviously very good at what they do but i've personally never gotten much more out of their records than really just about every other "trippy" record

I listened to it again a few hours ago. I like this album. It's not as nuanced and Intricate as other AnCo releases. It's a complete different style. Just a more direct and straight forward psych-pop record. I like it, I think it's enjoyable. It's not as good as Strawberry Jam or MPP but it's a different beast.
