Talk about the nicest Canuck in the music biz, Claire Boucher.
Grimes video of the day:
https://youtu.be/OsCfufAp2tM
What is her best song? Album? Live performance? Who would you like to see her collab with?
Remember the golden rule, treat others as you would want them to treat you. Grimes would never be mean to you.
Try to keep it music related, and be nice to Grimes!
please be nice to grimsey in this thread
baby baby baby gurrrl!!
Saw her live last Saturday.
Hands down, the best live gig I have seen so far. Fucking insane.
What's your favorite album besides Grimes'?
>>66376367
After experiencing Grimes, there is no need to pollute myself with lesser musics. My ears must stay pure for Grimes.
Hammer time
>>66376399
>>66376399
Dubs confirms it, somebody got pea on her body
>>66376000
She's a goddamned weeb and needs to be purged.
>>66376485
Well hello to you too.
>>66376385
Pic related.
>>66377038
I mean I just don't get the hype. Explain it to me...
>>66377220
She's an incredibly talented musician -that's it.
>>66377295
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
What do you like about her music?
>>66377428
Honestly? The level of textural/timbral complexity in her instrumentals (including vocals) along with the fact that she focuses on maintaining a rhythmic pulse throughout. I love atmosphericy bands like Radiohead, but one of the weaknesses I often find in that sort of thing is that the sense of rhythm seems to get lost. Imo she does a remarkable job of avoiding that pitfall.
>>66376367
the beach boys - pet sounds
>>66377606
I do love good production.
I gotta give her another shot. I have Visions and Art Angles but I haven't listened to them yet. You got anymore I should try out or should that do?
Also thanks for the genuine response! I like hearing the viewpoints of others so this was interesting..
>>66377984
Halfaxa is my personal favorite, and Darkbloom isn't far behind.
All of her stuff is really great/interesting, but she runs the gamut in terms of the types of sounds she incorporates into her music, which can turn some people off initially. Generally speaking, if your general taste runs more towards mainstream pop I'd suggest starting with Art Angels and working your way back chronologically. If you're more of an alternative music type, then I'd suggest starting with Geidi Primes and working forward.
>>66378202
I get ya I get ya. I will try that.
Then soon I can talk about this infamous Grimes with the rest of you.
>>66376000
>Who would you like to see her collab with?
Kevin Parker has stated numerous times that he enjoys producing for female pop singers. So why not Grimes?
what did she mean by this?
>>66378739
literally nothing
>>66378733
She's not a pop singer. She's a music producer who can sing. 'Twould be redundant (not objecting to the idea, just it would be extremely unlikely.)
>>66378884
She's a pop singer who can produce.
>>66378739
she just has that disease where you just make random hand gestures.
shes a pop artist who produces and sings
>>66376000
I like her nips.

>>66377984

>>66378902
Have you actually listened to her? She's about as far from a pop singer as you can get - it's what makes the fact that she writes and performs pop-sounding music so interesting.
>>66378323
>Then soon I can talk about this infamous Grimes with the rest of you.
I'm waiting for your opinions. Mention this thread to know it's you.
>>66379080

i know that she makes almost everything by herself, but this fact doesn't contradicts that she's also a pop singer

thoughts on her current look? i love it desu
Same. She looks awesome.
>>66379875
it's nice
i dunno... i sort of feel like she's watering down the weird side to grimes. making herself more palatable for normies. which i can't blame her for, im just sad to see her go.
i feel like the more popular she gets the less we'll see of claire poking through the cracks in the facade.
at least she's mostly unfiltered on james' instagram.

>“In my life, I’m a lot more weird than this,” she explains. “Grimes is more palatable for humans. If it was up to me maybe I’d wear a moustache or something [...] I try to make it digestible to a degree.”
>Why?
>“That’s what I’m interested in seeing. I create a thing that I wish existed in the world, versus my own full unabashed creative expression."
Like it or not, assimilating the mainstream into her act has clearly been of high importance to her for quite some time.
how many years till she stops being cute? I want to schedule my suicide on that day.

dude Kid A is rhythmic as fuck
>>66385857
Imo one of the best examples - other than anything by Grimes - of electronica managing to successfully bridge the gap between expansive atmospherics and intensive rhythms is 2013's Amok by Atoms for Peace (basically Thom Yorke backed by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers' rhythm section):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DpVfF4U75B8
Imo it's worth noting that Atoms for Peace member/producer and general Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich was apparently heavily into Grimes during its production:
https://twitter.com/nigelgod/status/202661679966859264
If anyone hasn't already, I highly recommend checking it out.
>>66386785
No need - Grimes herself calls it out at around the 2 minute mark:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkwMf0BpgSU
>>66386629
lmao. She's never gonna get a job with those hand tattoos once she fizzles out.
>>66387773
Godrich produced the new RHCP album, do you know if it's any good?
>>66386699
Pic related.
Bear in mind that the other girls with her in it are (from left to right) 17, 19, and 22-23 years of age, whereas Grimes is 28 - I think it's fair to say that she has more than a few years left...
>>66387419
>dude Kid A is rhythmic as fuck
Kid A has it's rhythmic moments, I'll grant you. But - much like the rest of Radiohead's oeuvre - complex rhythms and time signatures are more often than not used as devices to obfuscate the feel of a steady, measured pulse in the sound. Again - one of the reasons why Amok is so great imo is because of how it forces the wonderful atmospherics of Radiohead into the context of a beat that you can actually dance to.
>>66387993
Hadn't heard that. No idea - will have to check it out.
what's the difference between Art Angels and regular kpop album, besides languages?
>>66388913
and please dont tell me that grimes is doing all works by herself, i know that, the question is only about sound
>>66388913
>>66388944
The complexity in the composition.
I'm STILL finding tiny details in Art Angels' instrumental, like the clinking glasses and the pouring of liquid in "Butterfly".
>>66388998
My personal favorite so far has to be the dentist drill as pitched percussion effect in Venus Fly.
>>66388998
well, I was into kpop sometime, and i can tell you the same thing about most kpop songs that i've listened to
>>66383835
she has too much personality!!!!
>>66389046
Go ahead and name some examples. I've never really listened to K-pop before (never had an reason/interest.)
>>66389072
The only difference i can hear is that Art Angels is inspired by industrial music more than a regular kpop tune (drills in Venus Fly, for example), so it's sound more variative. I guess i answered to my own question, but I still think there's a lot of kpop in Art Angels.

>>66389270
One of the coolest things about Grimes' music is that - whatever your musical background/interests may be - you can almost always find loads of things in her songs that seem to speak to you.
Case in point - I have an extremely serious/professional level background in Western classical music (especially in early a capella repertoire.) To my ear, even Art Angels seems filled with musical references (sonic layerings and the like) that seem to directly reference that tradition, even as there are foreign sounds (to me) clearly referencing other musical traditions as well. It's like listening to a musical kaleidoscope of colors.
>>66389606
sorry I don't follow
>>66389629
electronica is a plebeian genre of music. it's essentially the metalcore of electronic music. just a half-assed hodge-podge of cliches to appeal to as many people as possible. also it's basically just pop

>>66389890
Oh yes - very much so. I enjoy Grimes' music immensely too.
I'm also a classically trained, professional musician and composer who makes a steady living as a live performer - I have absolutely nothing to complain about.
>>66389972
>Nah, I don't think it works with hip-hop and metal heads
One of the first people I met who is also a fan of Grimes is a huge Tool fan - it's actually the main reason why he first got into her music.
>Also, have you listened to Vulnicura?
Never heard of them. I'm not a metal fan myself (can't stand the sonic palette of it) so if that's what they are that would be why. Why?
>>66389973
from a purely visual aesthetic perspective i think they're nice to look at. very pretty and chaotic.
from a contextual/art history perspective, i think they were a bold and interesting idea for the time. however, if someone were to try something similar today i would not be very impressed.
i have a pretty big boner for postmodernism in general though, so that could have something to do with my opinion

I initially posed the question to the anon who said "patrician" music was inherently complex, so I wondered if something very expressive and somewhat uncontrolled/chaotic could also then be considered "good art"
I didn't agree that music needed to be complex to be "patrician"
>>66389764
>>66390120
Metal is by far my favorite thing. I really liked Grimes before I discovered metal, and thanks to this board I'm revisiting and enjoying her work again.
>>66391055
what kind of metal do you like?
>>66390997
>I didn't agree that music needed to be complex to be "patrician"
oh yeah me neither. i really enjoy a lot of different types of minimalism, and the middle-ground in between as well. still not a big grimes fan though
>>66390181
Vul- brings to mind the Roman god Vulcan, and references to the god of war would seem a natural fit for some part of the metal genre. Plus you mentioned it right after mentioning metal.
I know this probably sounds hypocritical coming from a self-proclaimed Grimes fan but Bjork's music has never really appealed to me since it just comes across as for just strangeness' sake. With Grimes music, no matter how strange a particular sound or musical gesture might be, you can always reduce it back to an everyday human thought or emotion - it's what makes it so relatable. Bjork may sound nice/interesting, but listening to her doesn't make me identify with it, whereas listening to Grimes does.
>>66390225
My taste is major part of what got me where I am... so I'll let YOU finish this thought.
>>66391298
>I know this probably sounds hypocritical coming from a self-proclaimed Grimes fan but Bjork's music has never really appealed to me since it just comes across as for just strangeness' sake.
you're right, it really is hypocritical
>>66391510
SOUNDS hypocritical - read the next sentence.
What's the appeal of the Grimes? I'll admit I only listened to her last album but there's like 3 good songs top and then...meh.
I like her eyebrows tho
>>66391676
Listen to her other (earlier) music and look for the sound patterns that connect them all together - that's the appeal.
>>66391298
>Bjork does things for strangeness' sake
It's funny since Grimes does absolutely the same. She said that Scream sounds that way just because she wanted it to sound weird, she hired the weirdest dancers, all these outros on the live shows, etc.
>>66391704
Plus she claimed that she wants to be the weirdest pop star.
>>66391676
her music is consistently pretty good, she's decently attractive, and she seems like a fun person to be around
I definitely have a soft spot for her though because her personality reminds me a lot of my ex's
>>66391704
Are you basing your opinion on just Art Angels?
>>66391751

>>66391799
>Never said that,
And I never said you did. I'm asking it as an actual question, because your answer will help me place your current perspective into her music.
>>66391751
Plus Halfaxa is generally more obscure and weird, there are lots more things that can be considered as "for strangeness' sake", what makes you think that my opinion is based only on Art Angels?

>listening to grimes is what got me a job as a professional classically trained musician
lmao
>>66391864
Okay, I guess I'm sitting here for too long, I read "are" like "and".
GRIMES IS VERY BORING AND MEDIOCRE AT BEST. ALSO SHE IS NOT PRETTY
>>66391888
>there are lots more things that can be considered as "for strangeness' sake",
Virtually every aspect of Grimes music can be seen as being "strange for strangeness' sake". The distinction I'm making here with Grimes is that if you look past just the obvious surface-level sonic qualities of her music, you end up seeing very normal, human emotions and stories being expressed.
>what makes you think that my opinion is based only on Art Angels?
All your cited examples are specifically from that album.
how would a grimes/noel gallagher collab sound? I want it to happen
>>66391676
you have good taste in eyebrows
>>66392106
yeah her whole eye area is her best physical feature imo
>>66392077
>All your cited examples are specifically from that album.
>>66391799
>>66392077
That distinction is subjective, I can say the same thing about Bjork or any other artist
>>66392254
All your MUSICAL examples are specifically from that album.

You know that Grimes is more than just a music project, right?
jfc the people in these threads are so fucking pretentious. they'll literally say anything in order to justify their unhealthy obsession with this mediocre musician.
>you just don't understand the subtleties of the juxtiposition of different textures in her music
fuck off.
>>66392313
>That distinction is subjective
Perhaps in the case of Bjork, but not in the case of Grimes. If you dig through the copious interviews that exist with her you can find a specific explanation or set of reference points for what the deeper meaning of intent was behind virtually every aspect of her art (music, visual, or otherwise.)
I'm not saying that the same can't be said - at least to some extent - for Bjork. Just that for Grimes it seems to be a much more purposeful thing.
>>66392455
you're right, let's talk about how she smells.
>>66392348
Plus, I mentioned Halfaxa, you can find there such tunes like Weregild, which features distorted vocals of her cat, or ≈Ω≈Ω≈Ω≈Ω≈Ω≈Ω≈Ω≈Ω≈ which is just the weirdest song she ever made

>Just that for Grimes it seems to be a much more purposeful thing.
why?
>>66392579
oh, let me guess
it's subjective, just like I said, right?
>>66384639
the visions album around this time 2012
>>66392579
Because of things like the fact that Weregild is the name of an important part of the legal system that governed early Germanic society. Virtually everything she produces is some sort of abstruse reference to something else that actually exists. It makes listening - and especially deep listening - to her music or studying her art/directing style that much more fun.
>>66392485
>i think it's not subjective, but i'm gonna prove that it is
kinda weird
>>66392690
>implying Bjork never made such references in her whole musical career
>>66392744
Well, actually I dont like Bjork as much as I like Grimes, but your arguments are so week and hypocritical I just cant stop myself from arguing with you
>>66392797
And I haven't slept for 30 hours, so I guess I'm done. bye
