What's everyone's thoughts on Brian Jones as a guitar player?
>>
>>66331453
i think a better question is what do people think about keith

keith gets shit from a lot of people, but he is a great rhythm player and came up with some really great riffs
>>
>>66331453
I've never really looked into what Jones did vs Keef. I think I prefer the era of the band he was in though.
>>
>>66331475
I like Keith in some ways. He knew he wasn't a great player but did some real work. Finding good sounds you can build a song out of, rather than the equally important embellishing and flushing out songs with lead. Pretty exemplary rhythm player, though far from the best.
>>
>>66331583
their best albums are the mick taylor albums. keith did the song writing/rhythm stuff and he just let mick do all the embellishments

I'm tired of how 90% of these threads are just gear spamming and circlejerking over your latest purchases.

I've learned literally nothing in these threads.
Why can't we just move away from this hyperconsumerist bullshit and talk about other things?
Like, I'd love to see more discussions on theory, tips and tricks, performance stories, busking, playing, related stories or technique.
I'm going to be sick if I see another post about "DURR LOOK AT WHAT I SPENT MY WELFARE MONEY ON, PLS PRAISE ME FOR BEING A CONSUMERIST DRONE!"

I've been going back and forth on what pickups to put in my Squier Mustang and I think I've settled on routing it for P90s. Are there any decent cheap P90s? I can't seem to find a consensus on forums on the GFS ones.

There's a lot of variety when it comes to p90s. You gotta know what you want, but most people aim for the sort of les paul junior tone. I have no freakin clue what magbets they had. I like that a lot for the bridge, for the neck, I dunno, I guess I want it to be even funkier. I am really not a fan of most of the seymour duncan ones, to me they sound too clear, close to a gretsch or something.

I can't give a solid recommendation either way, but I like weak magnets in the neck. Alnico II, or better yet rubber cheapos. I don't like to use the neck for cleans, always at least some breakup so that's not a good recommendation if you like to do sort singing Chicago blues lead stuff on the neck.

I guess this wasn't helpful but I love talking about pickups. IMO the best p90 tones come from nice and high pickups. That's part of the reputation of a "mean" sound imo. Non-adjustable dogears usually ended up pretty high on the vintage instruments. Somebody who's actually played a vintage LPJ, please correct me if I'm misinformed there.

I wanna start playing blues, so what amp should I get when I'm on a budget? I was thinking of Roland Bluescube, since I can't afford Marshall Bluesbreaker. My guitar is Epiphone ES-335.

Pic related, it's the bluescube
>>
>>66331710
>Are there any decent cheap P90s? I can't seem to find a consensus on forums on the GFS ones.

Quite honestly, I think these are shills. I've heard that Xaviere guitars that come standard with GFS pups and they sound like absolute shit. If you're gonna spend the time, money, and energy in putting new pickups in your guitar, might as well save up a little longer and buy some that will actually be an upgrade.
>>
>>66332006
the ad with glenn fry makes it sound incredible. but 900 bucks for a modeling amp is way too much. look around for used tube amps; go to small shops, as most of them there will be serviced and won't have problems, while still being pretty affordable.
>>
>>66332006
The first thing you should worry about is getting a law degree. Amps are no hassle
>>
>>66331996
Yeah I guess I'm going for a LPJ type tone. I used to own an SG Special that I loved the tone of, including the neck pickup. I know something like Lollars are regarded as the best P90s but I don't want to spend more on my pickups than I paid for the guitar itself.
>>
>>66332090
Yeah, I was considering a cheaper version of this amp, can't remember what is was called, but I remember its price to be around $500.
>>
>>66332006
Who are your favorite blues players? There's a lot of blues out there. Obviously some of it being poverty blues that worked pretty well. Some of those fenders are kinda hard to play certain stuff thanks to the nice compression they have. You can sort of gain those dynamics back with some reverb that tends to exaggerate dynamics, but it's not totally the same.

Best case scenario you can get something with low compression and use a compressor to get a fender sound when needed, but if you only listen to stuff that's always a bit compressed this might not be the way you want to go.

>>66332137
Maybe try winding or rewinding your own if you happen yo have a sewing machine around. Lollars are scatterwound I think and that's probably a decent part of vintage LPJ tone. Then again, I doubt your SG was that old that it'd have them.

You could still get better tube amps in that price range. You just have to be patient and keep your eyes peeled on CL.

Takes some patience, some people find the whole thing annoying. Meh, just a thought. You should check out some videos anyway to see if you would enjoy that kind of thing. Maybe you can look up what sort of wire and insulator they used on those things, too.

I haven't tried either yet, I'm just recommending this on specs. Both are indonesian made, so they should have comparable quality, and recent Schecter necks are similar to Ibanez.
If you want a Schecter, go for a Demon, it has a comparable pricepoint, but is 28" long, which should sound better.
Otherwise keep an eye on the used market, some gems might pop up, even though 8 strings are scarce there.

I know I asked last thread when was dying but, I might be trading q Baja Tele for this SG special with classic 57' pickups and a Hardshell. I'm wondering if there's a place where I could buy an SG pickguard in Surf Green? Also I was thinking about putting in some P90s from my 60s Teisco to replace both pickups. Also guy who replied I'm getting it done at ChicagoMusicExchange since I don't think my local guy knows about vintage wiring and routing too well and CME deals with stuff like this daily

>>66332849
Probably the opposite, I've read that people with shite handwriting have it bad because they're trying to scribble down what ideas their brain is rapidly sending out and the hands can't catch up. When I improvise on guitar I used to mess up a lot when playing a fast lick and this was when I was around 14-15 then as I practiced from 16-18 I'm able to do some rapid fills
>>66331710
Yea I was the got saying to get Duncan's, Bareknuckle, Lindy Fralins, Joe Barden (makes really good SC Humbuckers) and GFS but I said before go GFS if you wanna be cheap. But the idea with the Lollars sounds soild are you wiring it up yourself or are you getting someone to do it?
>>
>>66334746
don't do that trade you're going to regret it. Baja Tele over SG any day
>>
>>66334746
If I were you, I'd get some surf green singly-ply plastic that looks like it'd work, use spray adhesive to attach it to the top of the pickguard, with a bit of overhang all around, then trim or file it down the rest of the way. Using a scraper you can fix up the bevel. Depending on the plastic you can use a lighter to heat the bevel once it's pretty smooth to get it to shine. Then you just gotta add the screw holes. A counter sink is easy, too.
>>
Hey /gg/, I posted here like two weeks ago. I had two guitars in storage which I never learned how to play, and was finally able to get them.

There's some good news and some bad. Good news is, I have an amp, pick, spare strings, etc. for the electric guitar, which survived 10 years worth of moves and storage. The acoustic did not however. The neck of it is nearly broken in half.

I looked up what guitar I have, and apparently it's this http://archive.gibson.com/en-us/Divisions/Maestro/Electrics/Single%20Cutaway/

Is it a shit guitar?

I'm sorry but people are gunna hate me for saying this but I don't like the Tele at all. I've been playing a strat since I sarted and always preferred them over Teles. >>
>>66334976
I don't have to follow the link to tell you it's a shit guitar. It's got a broken neck, and it's got no sentimental value, so don't bother.
>>
>>66334990

Mick Taylor first appeared in Let it Bleed and last performed on It's only Rock N' Roll, that makes almost 6 years of awesome discography.

Brian is just another hack glorified by dying at a young age, the band were merely playing blues covers back then and their first songs aren't that interesting. Maybe Brian was more inspired than his bandmates at that time, but it's not like he was special in any way. Everything the Stones did after he died easily tops all the Brian era.
>>
>>66335043
Nah mate that link goes to my working electric. The acoustic is the fucked one.
>>
>>66334976
>Is it a shit guitar?

yes. but depending on what type of music you want to play and the condition of the frets, it might be in your best interest to buy a good pickup and swap it out along with the electronics. depending on what pup you buy this would cost roughly the same price of a new cheap guitar, including labor (>$300).

see this video, for what i mean.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sz17RUrbNYc

Worse comes to worse you have a good pickup for another guitar/project.

>>66334981
I wish, but they're weird silver Japanese P90s that overdrive very very well. They also do Strat cleans perfectly. One day I want to see how they're wound and try to recreate some more. I'd love to keep them on pick related but it's so hard to play since it goes out of tune every 2 minutes, neck is as thick as the body, unproportioned, body is too small and the action needs to be very high or it'll buzz like crazy
>>
>>66334976
Well the bridge looks like garbage, no intonation adjustment means your intonation will always be wrong, and you only have one full humbucker setting.
So yeah, it looks like shit, and if it was in a storage for a long time it definitely needs a truss rod setup, but if you can set it up, then you've got a learning guitar. I wouldn't really go for a pickup swap though.

Those blues covers, along with Satisfaction, are what put them on the map. They're fucking great, it's too bad you can't appreciate them.

Maybe if you listen to Muddy Waters and all those nigger bluesmen that inspired the Stones you'd learn how blues-rock sounds and you'd be able to tell what they did in their first era wasn't that special.

I like everything about the Stones, their first albums are nice but definitely not great, they were just another boat in an ocean of blues. Taylor's guitar playing and Keith's open G tuning are what defined them as a band. As good as they sounded, they were just another english band playing black music before that.

Hey guys, I came here the other day to ask about a standard blue mexican stratocaster and if it was a good choice for my first electric guitar but the HSH has caught my eye and I wanted to see if anyone has any opinions/insight on it. Is this still a good electric to start with?
>>
>>66335822
Whichever one you think will motivate you to learn
I started on a Davison strat copy that would cut my hands open because of the sharp fret ends. To have started out with a Fender strat would've been amazing
>>
>>66335822
yuck. if you really want a humbucking guitar, HSS is the only acceptable way to go imo. otherwise you barely have a strat. resale value is less down the line for this reason.
>>
>>66335822
A neck humbucker isn't as useful as you might think. I definitely think of HSS as a better choice.

I do think a fender is a bit excessive for a beginner, but if you've got the dough sitting around AND you buy used at a decent price I guess you might as well. I just think no pressure is a very good thing.
>>
>>66335822
Any MiM guitar'll be good to start on.
HSH leads to easier high gain sounds.
I think the neck humbucker is kinda useless, a single coil works better as you never use much gain in that position

Youll be happy with a fender. Get an HSS though.

No point in wasting money on cheap knock offs or bargain bin copies since it seems like youre sticking to it.

also to the anons suggesting a HSS it's actually a hundred quid more expensive where I'm buying from, does the price justify the difference?

Hell no, HSH is just different from HSS, but not necessarily better. And you can just tweak your knobs until it sounds right, or even re-wire your positions.
>>
>>66335967
Well in that case y'know, spend what you want. If you just want a HSS guitar fender is kinda pricy, but if you like the history of the brand and whatnot go for it. You might end up wanting to replace the single coils at some point.

>does the price justify the difference?

No not really. All Fenders are overpriced. And the used market is oversaturated with Strats, so you will most certainly be overpaying for this guitar, should you choose to resell it.

I'd say consider other guitars in the same price range if you're gonna spend more. Also Mexi Strats have ceramic pickups which can range from good-sounding to absolute shit depending on the year. I'd say go G&L, but only because I'm gassing for pic related.

The pups in that guitar are incredibly versatile and sound amazing, also u.s.a-made. Much better than a Strat IMO. I think Classic Vibe Strats sound better than Mexi strats too btw, but what do I know.

Dude I've been listening to the Stones for all my fucking life since my father played their records, I haven't listened to any other band more than them, and I watched them live twice.

It's not my problem if you need to disregard me as a meme to counter my arguments. I love the Stones but I'm aware of their perfection, imperfection, and of the 'ok' things they've done. Now try to read my posts so you finally get my point or fuck off and come back when you learn how to participate in a discussion.
>>
>>66336035
in that case get the hsh and a new pickguard plus a decent neck pickup. Should come out cheaper. Depends on the condition of each guitar of course.
>>
i'm electrifying a cigar box guitar and was wondering if anyone knew what kind of tone would come out of wiring a single coil pickup directly into an output jack, rather than using a tone/vol pot intermediate. also can't decide whether i should place the pickup near the bridge or neck and how that would affect the tone...I'd prefer a warmer tone rather than bright
>>
>>66336161
huh. This guitar looks better than most g&l teles with those pickups. Neat.
>>
>>66336418
It'll be brighter than most. I wouldn't put it too close to the bridge. If you think you can fit it under the strings, try experimenting with double sided tape. BTW, try to find some way to ground the string.

>It's not my problem if you need to disregard me as a meme to counter my arguments.

I just don't feel like wasting my energy on some retard who's convinced that Mick Taylor is Jesus or something. It's all subjective. I could say the same thing about Ronnie Wood and we'd be arguing all day.

My problem is that your criticism of Brian Jones is completely unfounded. I honestly think you just pulled that opinion out of your ass and feel the need to make sweeping generalizations about the band, because you just don't get their early work.

Now a normal person would just leave it as a difference in taste and move on with his life, but an autist like you can't accept that someone else might dare to disagree.

RG8 is decent but you'll want something like an 80 gauge for the lowest string. Also the stock pickups are low end Cort bass pickups and sound terrible, so budget for replacing those.

hey guys, ive been posting here the last couple of days about how im upgrading from the ol' fart box and shit stick. i gave up trying to sell the stagg and behringer online after a week on ebay, reverb, craigslist, and other sell your soul type of sites with literally 0 offers. brought them to guitar center and barely covered the cost of the behringer walking away with 170 for the guitar and amp. ended up selling a bunch of old xbox shit that i havent touched in a year and a half and an old iphone to bring cash up to 300.

now i know i said i was going to pick up a dano but when i brought all my shit to midwest buy and sell they had a tele there for 450 that was used and apparently modded but it was a tele for 150 less than they usually go for. brought my cash in and the owner talked to me for a couple minutes, just like what i think of it what kind of music im making etc etc. he ended up taking 60 bucks off the thing because im a broke college student and he saw how much i loved the guitar (i mean i still like the danos, im probably going to end putting lipstick pups in this thing at some point but not rn). so im super super happy with this, only gripes i have with it are that it has a humbucker in the neck pickup instead of a single coil but thats manageable especially with the price i got it for and honestly it still sounds and plays amazing.

the only weird thing is that im trying to identify exactly what model this is but im having a lot of trouble. ill post pics but if someone could help me out that would be great. originally, i thought it was a baja that the original owner had just fucked with-- but on second inspection, even though it is an ash body, it doesnt have the 4 way pickup switch. and there arent any 3 way pickup switch ash body made in mexico teles that i can find that also have the 2011 60th anniversary plate on the back. maybe i just suck at google bwe. can anyone help me figure this out?

Okay, asking the bassists of /gg/, how important is the exact position of a MM-style humbucker for that typical stingray sound and how important is the exact position of a splitcoil pickup for the typical P-bass sound? I want both of them in one bass, but it seems like They wouldn't fit in their exact positions. I'm afraid the MM-style humbucker would sound like a generic bridge pickup if I moved it more towards the bridge, so would it be better to have the splitcoil a bit more towards the neck side? Or am I going at this from the completely wrong angle?

>>
>>66345910
The T-60 was about 300 bucks when I got it. I paid a little more for shipping. Good guitar, hard to play leads on, small frets, smaller neck. Really cool pickups. The amp is Solid State but loud as hell. Perfect Keyboard amp as well as guitar, really wide EQ (knobs are really sensitive and responsive.) Best sounding Tremolo I've heard in years.
>>
>>66345997
Those would be the correct positions for both? Looks a bit silly, but if both sound genuine then I think I'll have to ask my builder to do this for me.
>>66346039
Or use the MM in single coil mode as the bridge PU and add a single coil after the split coil PU, most versatile bass ever?
>>
>>66346062
Yeah, that's the sweet spot for both. I think I'm gonna put a MM in my jazz now, plenty of room there. I'd probably bump it a little up to fit the bridge pickup of the jazz, shouldn't be noticeable. So the fibal config will be Jazz-MM-Jazz-strat-mudbucker (maybe the dimarzio model 1 instead, I like that too).

Anyway single coil mode MM is way off from jazz.

I think I'll be happy with a P and stingray in one bass (typical MM humbucker with the big pole pieces and a split coil with the traditional small ones), and then just get a Jazzbass as well or split the humbuckers in my current bass. Cool, I'll definitely get something like this built.

I don't think you really need to have this built custom, you can pretty much just cut a hole in a p-bass without too much trouble, or pay for that work alone.

Also if you want to be more minimal this exists

I currently don't own a P-bass, and my builder lives in eastern europe, so a job like this gives me a custom instrument for basically the same price as I'd pay for an american standard P-bass, but exactly to my specs (35'' scale, modern neck, active electronics, etc.).
>>
Might not be quite right actually. Oh well, close enough. There's actually some variation with PJ basses anyway...bumping one or the other shouldn't be noticable.

Yeah, that's what I thought. But it does seem like they need to be touching each other for that to work, everyone who builds P+MM humbucker always has a gap between them, turning the humbucker into a typical bridge PU instead of a full range one that sounds good on its own.

Looks like my jazz-MM hybrid has someone leading the way.

I also found this, which seems pretty neat.

I think I'll be fine with my plan.

"no"

The strategy seems to be to put it as close to the bridge as the control plate allows. If that overlaps with the bridge, hmm. Not sure what to do. I guess just using two screws won't necessarily tilt.
>>
>>66346604
I guess the humbucker keeps the one side of the single coil in place because it's so close, seems a bit sketchy though and you'd have to file/saw off the screwmounts on one side of the bridge single coil.
>>
God damn, I should gotten a stingray clone instead. A pickguard and control play that actually make sense. I always hit my hand on the jazz bass controls when I play with a pick.

They still have shitty bridges though.

I'm taking a jazz band camp this week i've been playing guitar for 4-5 months and so far I hate my experience.

It's mostly highschool kids some college, I know my major and minor chords, learning barre at the moment and they want me to play with a band that they split us in and start jamming along to maiden voyage and blue train and i'm just sitting there strumming a few chords i know like an idiot.

What chords would i want to learn the quickest to shape up?

Dude, the basses work. The bridges adjust well, what more could you want from them? High mass bridges are a shitty meme.

The ramones

These type of simple "saddle on a metal plate" bridges tend to rattle and I absolutely hate them for that reason. Even if they have grooves to guide the saddles it's still a problem on the thicker strings. The designs where the saddles are firmly locked into place just make more sense.
>>
>>66346862
Oh yeah, I have heard of that happening. You can shim the neck, but who wants their strings that far off the body? Good point. No I kinda want to replace mine and lower the neck. I probably won't do it though.
