The 'Be a Body' techno dance remix (my description) that she's taken to doing live recently is really more about serving the visual performance aspect of her act (she has this really cool vogue-esque dance routine she does, which obviously gets lost if you're just listening to the audio.) I'm not part of the original response chain, but here goes.
I've actually never heard of Death Grips (apart from the endless stream of memes here on /mu) but - spurred on by your question and general boredom - I've decided to start looking into them, and... honestly, I'm actually pretty impressed. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that if I had even an inkling of interest in listening to industrial hip-hop/rap I'd probably love them. And herein lies the big distinction imo between them and Grimes.
I'm a classically trained professional musician with a taste for new wave and classic goth. I hate rap and hip-hop. I also actively hate pop music. Discovering Grimes has caused me to start seriously listening to pop music - despite the fact that I STILL hate it - because of the myriad ways in which she takes its elements (along with elements from many other genres including classical ones) and re-contextualizes them to mean something new to her, and consequently (via her excellent skills as a composer) new to me as well.
That, to me, is the definition of truly great music - music that simultaneously takes new sounds and makes them seem old and takes old sounds and makes them seem new. It is the essence of what makes truly great classical music Classic, and it is something which - to my classically trained ear - Grimes' music exhibits abundantly. Even to the extent that - if forced to give a single genre signifier to describe it - I would be sorely tempted to call it neo-classical (aka music that is likely to be remembered as great classical music 100+ years from now.)
Back to Death Grips. DG might be putting on one hell of a good show for the musical realm they call home, but I wouldn't - even for a moment - seriously compare them to Grimes. The whole Grimes project is just on a completely different level - both sonically and philosophically.

It's interesting. When I first was obsessed with Grimes, it felt like a whole new world reading all of these interviews.
Now that I'm going back through and reading them again, and reading the obscure interviews, I'm met with a different image of claire than I saw before.
It's almost like I'm seeing through the facade. Like I can see the flaws, all the inconsistencies. I almost feel like she's trying to create a narrative that's not exactly what is true. Like she's trying to project this mystique that she can't exactly live up to, but she's managed to keep her personal life enough out of the spotlight that she can get away with it. Only the extremely scrupulous could identify it.
And it's only when she was early in her career, too. Recently she's been much more consistent. I think she's already evolved into the contemporary Claire. she's matured and is no longer a kid, she no longer has a drive to lie about what she does or who she is to try and create a false interest. Now, rather, she's more concerned with keeping those things out of the spotlight than putting them in it.

I think she was a weird kid. Her parents didn't know what to do. She ended up raising herself and she resented them for it. She did a terrible job of it and she was outcasted by her peers and she ended up seeking solace in music, drugs and the internet.
Worrying her parents, she was sick of it by the time she graduated high school and moved far away, so she could degenerate in peace. I don't doubt for a second that she was within inches of the cliff-face of suicide and that the success of Grimes saved her life.
I think she's an introspective person who places herself above others ultimately, but feels guilty about it and in day to day activities over compensates for this guilt by being super nice. I think she thanks whatever spiritual authority she believes in every night for her success when she remembers to. I think she's annoyed with everybody who tries to get to know her or understand her. To be honest senpai it is. I can relate to her in a lot of ways. I'm working on stuff that I hope really works out, so I use her as an inspiration.
