So I've recently started producing, and I'm working on some rythmic noise/industrial stuff but I'm having an incredibly hard time mastering the tracks... I've produced a few techno tracks but this is something new for me and I've no idea how to go about making it sound "normal", for lack of a better word. For those of you into this type of stuff, you know that a noise album can sound well produced. Just wondering if anyone here has some tips

Thanks

"Mastering" can only be done by a master audio engineer. You're talking about "mixing"

Mastering is something that some audio scientist in germany does when you send him your final mix, in order to get it prepped for mass producing albums. He sends it back if there's a single instance of clipping or any other errors. Its not something most people can do.

Producing takes years to get good at. hang out in /prod/ , read all the PDFs about mixing and levels, learn how to EQ, how to use compressors, panning, etc.

lol what

mastering is literally just the production of an audio mixdown. It has to do with the master mix, i.e the stereo-output of the original mixdown, not "master" in the sense of some kung-fu movie. Fuck's sake lmfao.

Educate yourself:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_mastering

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mastering_engineer

Mastering is a specialist job. Mastering engineers do mastering all day every day. They dont produce, they dont mix, they master.

Producer (makes final mix) - > Mastering Engineer (preps for pressing / radioplay / whatever format you're aming for) - > Consumer

post it in /prod/

I write music probably in a similar vein.
Here's my shit so I can shill but also substantiate my advice.

Focus on your sound design and mixing. Youtube tutorials, at least for mixing, are a lot less academic and under the hood so unless you're a career musician they're decent.
prod is a joke stay out of prod

I master my own tracks.
They sound great on shitty headphones, beats, expensive flat af headphones, shitty speakers, good speakers, good speakers in a treated room, car speakers, outdoor arena/stage.
Check m8.

no you dont lol

Only mastering engineers master tracks. They're the guy you send your mix to before doing a mass CD run, or to prep a single for radio play.

If you work for a mastering company, then maybe you can master your own tracks. It takes quite a bit of very expensive specialist equipment.

Anybody can master, it's just going to be a shitty to serviceable master.

you seem to be under the assumption that mastering and mixing are synonyms when they are not

No, not really.
