I skimmed through city lights. The first track was very cheap sounding, with very basic and barebones production with shit tons of reverb thrown on, but the album took a massive leap in quality after that track. There's a bit much of that midi piano, but I enjoyed listening to what i listened to. I still think you should try learning some music theory though if you haven't already. your music is very tuneful.

This is interesting stuff, man. I'm gonna have to come back and give it a fuller listen later, but I'm listening to Clash right now and it's kind of sounds like some bizarre Person Pitch outtake. (Even though that makes no sense.) Will be coming back to this, it's pretty challenging stuff and lacks soul BUT still there's something very visceral to it that draws me in.
>>
>>66248650

you're absolutely right, it is challenging and as Eric said patience testing. However, Clash is probably the most challenging and unforgiving song on the album. thanks for giving it a listen!

(continued)

I take back what I said about this lacking soul. It gets better the more I listen to it. Will definitely be coming back to this later.

Here's a review of https://alexseibel.bandcamp.com/album/not-about-you

So I promised you an in-depth review and now after a week in Nicaragua this little EP still holds up. Thus, there's no way I'm not gonna review it. I don't know if you saw my review in the last thread but just in case I'm posting it here as well. I think for sure the strongest thing that it has going for it is the concept. Trying to forget about a girl by focusing on memories of long-gone childhood friends adds a lot of pathos to the music, in a manner similar to what this guy (https://m4rk.bandcamp.com/album/personality) did. I love these kind of themes; they're very vulnerable but in an enticing way. Still though, you want your music to stand alone, concept or no concept. So as for the music itself, I would encourage you to pursue sounds that might polarize people. Deviate from "generic" as much as possible. For example, I love the screeching hawk noise that comes in about 8 seconds into Back Then. I didn't mind the white noise in it either; it added a more "homemade" element to it that I can always get behind. Overall the synthesizers are real cozy, especially that refrain that first comes in about 21 seconds into And With a Bright Smile (my favorite moment on the whole EP.) They have a kind of "cooing" sound to them to some degree. I enjoyed this despite it not being my usual style. Experiment a little bit, maybe use unusual time signatures. Look into fleshing out melodies. (And is the album cover a picture of the sky? I like that.)
>>
>>66248629
Well you'll probably be glad to know I've been avoiding that particular piano on sleepy river. Also I know I should learn music theory because I'm gravitating away from loops and whatnot and there's only so far you can go without knowing what you're doing.
>>
>>66248965
im not the guy you reviewed, but i just wanna say i really respect the effort you put into that review.
>>
>>66248945

I just posted something about it already growing on me. I liked Clash a lot BECAUSE of how unforgiving it was. Your direction should be very intriguing man, keep it up
>>
>>66249006
thanks a lot my friend, there's nothing more inspiring than hearing kind words about something you made and are proud of. i appreciate it.
>>
>>66249005

Thanks man, I think I enjoy amateur music a little more than some because I get a sense of camaraderie. If you have anything to review, I'll take a look at it, although I can't promise I'll like it

>>
>>66249066

i agree with what you said about amateur music, you get a real sense of authenticity that you can't really get elsewhere.
>>
>>66249119

Yeah, Daniel Johnston's early tapes are a real good example of that (although his music really polarizes people). He's just making the music for a few select friends at that point and it just has no manufactured slickness whatsoever

Always rec this. Legitimately great electronic album.

A lot to go through in this catalogue but I like what I'm hearing. The more grandiose passages are reminding me of Oneotrix Point Never

>>66248826
I always like stuff like this. The beat on that second song reminds me of something Deerhunter would do.
>>
>>66248826
I'm personally not a fan of large numbers of short tracks, but this definitely has a sound to it. its the cartoon sound effects really. I don't feel like large instrument sets really work with your excessive levels of lo fi, its like the band Asia, who bragged about their then newfangled huge 32 track tape recorder, while the music sounded like the instruments were trying to physically escape it. Your album sounds stuffy in the same way.

>>66248880
I like this a lot, really nice from the start. You recced my stuff last thread, thanks for that
>>66248826
I liked this, especially Goodbye Forever, Poinettias, you can easily hear the E6 influence
>>
>>66249228

Thanks for the feedback; the thing is I get a real bang out of songs that sound like a crammed elevator. (Could you tell me what Asia album you're referring to by chance?) Nevertheless, I am trying to change my production style for my future music and I'll certainly take this into account, as a lot of people have told me they wish my music was less lo-fi and I agree with them.

I'm listening to your Sky Simplified right now. It's funny because I can totally see how what you said about my album reflects your own personal music style. For example, you obviously have no trouble making elongated, more stretched out tracks, in contrast to my blurbs, but most of all this stuff has so much space to it, plenty of room for the instruments to breathe. And I'd say that's a good thing, even though I like the opposite extreme just as much. Insomniacs of 1985 is my favorite so far. The one thing I can say I didn't like about what I heard so far was that some of it sounded a little too synthetic. The warmer the sound was, the more I liked it.
>>
>>66249413
The album I'm talking about Alpha, the only one I listened to. Its a real piece of history. All critique comes down to personal preference in the end anyway. Which songs on my album sound synthetic? I tried to make it so it starts out very cold and a little hostile and gradually warms up and gets happier until I start singing.
>>
>>66249169
Listened to the first track. It ass cool. wasn't too crazy about the vocals but those got better as it went on.

Also I think that may have been the best compliment I've gotten in a bandcamp general. I love OPN to death.

The opener was a little harsh for me, but the second track was really nice. It sounds a little artificial to me, though. Cirrus is beautiful. The noise at the beginning wasn't the best, but it turned itself around. Perhaps having a hint of the drone after the initial appearance of the string and hiding it in the static at the beginning would give it a bit more texture. Insomniacs of 1985 was pretty cool in it's idea. The drone that comes in at 2:20 is beautiful. I look forward to seeing where your production goes in the future.
>>66248880
Before anything else, if you say your mixing is bad, work on your mixes more. Listen to others' mixes, use references, read about it, and watch videos. Publish work you're proud of that you don't have to preface with an apology. The first track has cool textures, but I can't understand the time signature (5/?) at all.
>>66248119
This is pretty rad stuff. The opening track has a solid groove, blends the bleepy chiptune (i don't know what to call it) noises with that kick and your guitar and bass well. The second track is really good, too. I'll have to revisit this again because I really enjoyed it.

>>66248880
Lush as shit. Sounds very vapor-y. I think it would be better if the sidechain were less noticeable, but I really enjoyed it anyway. I love the trebly white noise hi hats on the second track.
>>
>>66249486
Ah well there you go then. I didn't listen to everything all the way through, but what you said is exactly what I thought. It started out very cold and gradually warmed more and more. If that's the sound you're going for, then you hit it, and of course, like you said, it's all personal preference. Music with cold atmospherics in general doesn't jibe very much with me at all, with the exception of 4 Rooms by Jacob Kirkegaard.
>>
>>66249312
Thanks for the rec.
The first track, "Elephant Seal," has a great title and reminds me very much of Sung Tongs. I love Sung Tongs. I would say that we both need to work on toning down our influences a little bit but that's really beside the point since the first track was far and away my favorite. (So who cares about how original it is?)
>>
>>66249546
Thanks, I'm a little hazy on how to define dynamics though. Does that mean you like the contrasting volume levels on it?

We didn't have a vocal booth or anything to record the vocals in so they couldn't hear themselves very well while tracking unfortunately.

And yeah the organ kind of synths are very OPN-esque. And you capture a similar anticipatory, off kilter vibe.

Hey, I'm looking for some feedback on our bands material. It's alternative progressive rock, and the recording quality of these tracks suck but I want feedback before we lay them down in the studio on the 18th, so please give us some comments. This seems like the best thread to get feedback from, even though they aren't on band camp.

Indigo Waters: The song that we intend to release as a single from the LP.
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-r7Qi5vBJR1NFJoMUtPaTJ1YU0

Semi-Automatic: A 9 minute funky prog metal song. Vocals aren't complete yet so they sound a little shitty, and there's some sloppiness instrumentally.
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-r7Qi5vBJR1cllQWWtNdHpLTk0

Fragments: A more straightforward song than the others, aside from the time signature craziness in the bridge towards the end.
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-r7Qi5vBJR1cjZwWWNHM1ZfRVk

Comfortable Liar: Last but not least, a song in its infancy that we are working with now.

Will be following up this post with some feedback for y'all too.

Go for it! Looking forward to the new EP. I'm So Lame is really cool. The composition of this track is spot on for the mood it tries to convey. Segwaying the the delay of the vocal into the groove of the drums that you have is great. Well first, you should take your music more seriously. I've learned that if you want your music respected, you should learn to respect it yourself. That said, I'm actually really digging the sound. I'm still working on the behemoth that is the first song, but I just love that vocal sample with that chugging sound. I honestly love it. I don't know how much was original or how much was just an edited version of this original song, but it's really great. What was the production process? Can't wait to hear the rest.

As for my music, I just released an EP, I'd love some thoughts on it.

Alright, I'll check em out

i think my only bit of feedback is that these beats are a little too skeletal and the some of the drum timbres are really stiff and can feel lifeless as a result, other that i like the way you cut and use samples, it makes it pretty interesting glitch hop
>>
>>66258337

Well, I really don't think I should be the one giving you feedback because this type of music is so far removed from my personal preference. I've heard stuff like this before; can't think of any specific examples. It's the type of music where the singer has a technically very skilled voice but still rubs me completely the wrong way and leaves me feeling flat. The band is competent, just not anything that clicks with me. Sorry to let you down like that. I only listened to the single so if you told me that one of those links sounded different from the single I'd give it a chance but honestly I think you might wanna look for someone else's advice.

No problem dude, I totally understand where you're coming from. Music is subjective and if it's not your thing then that's totally fine.

this couldve been interesting, but it just sounds kind of bland most of the time, maybe add more interesting sounds and this couldve been a lot more interesting

Indigo waters is really cool, but I feel like the drummer has a rough time finding the beat when starting out. Outside of that, you guys know your shit and seem pretty talented. My only concern is that your sound has been done a thousand times over. It also seems like you're running through the track instead of really getting into it and feeling it, which could benefit your sound immensely. I've had a lot of practices where we've hit the right combination of precise timing and really feeling what we're playing and it's 10x better than any other take. Good luck in the studio, though. In addition, giving feedback to others is also a great way to create discussion, create a community atmosphere, and receive feedback in return.
>>66258346
This is super rad. On the first track, the volumes are technically right, but the right ear's clipping makes it seem louder than the left. Your songwriting is great and this is really groovy. The digital blippy drumming works, but a live kit could also benefit the sound of the first track as well. On the second track, the knee-pats cut in a bit much, but the track is still excellent. Your songwriting, guitar, and voice work fantastically together. I look forward to more of your work!
>>66258004
Up That Hill is really, really good. I'm a sucker for dream pop and you do a very good job at it. If I wasn't super poor, I'd buy the shit out of this. I wish I could write bass lines like this (I feel like I only get by as a bassist and it sucks). You have great pop sensibilities, which I feel like a lot of people shun because of the nature of wanting to differentiate yourself from pop, but it's groovy and sounds fantastic. Only piece of feedback that I can give is try a take of the track where the very last "that hill" is the same pitch as the "just". Great work man!

You sound shockingly similar to Avey Tare, with maybe a little bit of Black Francis thrown in there. I don't mean this lightly; the resemblance is truly uncanny. The music similarly reflects Animal Collective to some degree, specifically tracks like "The Purple Bottle" or "Grass." I don't know if this is what you were going for, but if so, you nailed it.

This is not to say that what you've done here is all AC all the time. There are plenty of other sounds in there. So far my favorite part is the chord change 1 minute and 30 seconds into Watered Tree. It's subtle but very effective. I can tell, for one thing, that you aren't messing around here; you're fully devoted to pushing your music to the limits.

I think I may indeed be coming back to this. The only critique I have- (and I don't want to say this because it's hardly a critique) is that something about this music annoys me a bit. Kind of like Danielson Famile- both you and that band impress me but also make me wince. This is a big problem for me, and it's frustrating because much of what you're doing sounds very complex and outside the box. I also didn't particularly care for the album cover. The colors didn't jibe very well with each other. Nevertheless, the amount of potential you have is palpable and I will definitely be interested in what you do next. (Here's another part I really liked- the little drum bit about 2 minutes and 25 seconds into Dark Cloud.)

This is APM. Thanks man! I really appreciate the feedback.

>>66258693

Thank you! I appreciate the feedback. I spent a long time loving AnCo so their influence definitely shows up. I also agree with you on the annoying thing. It's kind of unavoidable atm thats just my shitty personality hahaha like I get sick of me. My music has always been like "almost but ugh" like it kinda makes me cringe. I'm actually very happy you said that because I had reacted like that to it even though my friends all said like 'no you did fine its okay' but like inside i knew... I want to remove that quality from my music. I'm tryna get there. Thank you again for listening. and yeah I'm not messing really like music is what I want to do with my life.

Thanks, man. I always enjoy cutting videos to music with some energy to it. I'm glad you enjoyed my music video, I really appreciate it. All the best, my man.

>>66258400
That's fair, anon. I can see how that might be somewhat off-putting (although it is intentional, I try to sequence my beats and manipulate them so I can have a, for lack of a better phrasing, a stiffer sound). I do intend to vary things more with my new material though, I hope you'll enjoy that a little more. Thank you for listening, anon.

this is really bizarre. love how oddly hypnotizing/catchy gutterfinger is. don't really have much else to say, but keep it up. i'd be interested to hear more in this style

>>66259513
interesting ideas on this one. the bubbly synths on highway are pretty cool. and i love the sample and slow progression on begin. push is kinda boring but the textures on the second half are much more interesting, kinda reminds me of the hyper light drifter soundtrack. altered landscape is probably the best track, those drums are catchy as hell (sounds like the synthetic substitution break at points). overall good shit. downloading

i like the second half of im so lame, but the beginning was just a taad bit bland. not trying to rip on your music or anything, i just found it a bit monotonous to start out with, but it picked up by the end. i really fucking liked the song slacker, you have a good thing going with that one, as well as with the rest of the album. i really dig it.

Iowa City's pretty rad. I played at house venue called Governer's Mansion and it was pretty dope.

If you're into Dalek at all you should totes head to Des Moines on the 22nd, they're playing a free show at a tiny ass bar, ita gunna be great.

I think it would be cool if you made an album similar to this but with a wider variety of instruments, like some bells and chimes. Something a little wonky. Obviously that would be a little difficult but I think it would pay off. Maybe some field recordings also, like some slowed down bird noises or something.

I switched to your first album (Where Am I?) because I liked the album cover better. I have to say that what I've heard from this one so far I liked a lot better than Smog, but I'll need to listen to them both a little bit more. I love the way that WWHWTSROOF transitions into Newfoundland (those drums are great). Canis Major is a fun song, reminds me a little bit of the album Seniors and Juniors by Marshmallow Coast. I also like the weirder, challenging interludes like I Can See My
Breath.

In short, when I compare this to Smog, I find Where Am I? to be much more memorable and exciting, perhaps because of its rougher edges. Nevertheless, A Creek Running Through a Church has the kind of crunchy fuzz that I really go for. I'll be interested in where you go next, and I think I'll show some of my friends, but I can't say that what you have completely grabbed me JUST yet.
