Syro part 2: blue edition

its pretty solid, better than Syro. Its so chill that the tracks blend together. although complex nothing popped out and caught my ear. 8/10

I really like this EP. The kicks are so good, so crisp but still comfy and not edgy at all.
>>
CIRKLON3 ( Kolkhoznaya mix )

So good, digging the vintage sci-fi synth theme. Cheetah7b is the highlight for me, those pads came down from the heavens just for me, absolutely perfect. Defo best tune on there and up there with Rich's best. Cirklon1 is also a classic, well reminiscent of his '95 stuff. Cheetah2 is also good, love the timbres on that one, altho might have to filter out those annoying as fuck high frequencies that come in for no reason, come on Rich you were so close to making an absolute perfect track.

All around its a godlike release.

Still don't get all the people saying it's better than Syro though. It's miles ahead of his other 2 EP's lately, but Syro has so many masterpieces it's insane, longer and more complex tracks, more variation and overall better quality. Produk, Xmas_Evet, Minipops and syro437ut all wipe the floor with this stuff, not to put this stuff down though, Cirklon1, Cheetah 2 & 7 are defo up there, but it's only 3 tracks.
>>
>>66244962
It's no Syro
>>
Warp has actually been on a roll this year imo. All the old dudes are actually showing up.
>>
>>66246227
Syro was just too overdone in places. It was a good record, but all the samples coming in and panning around were really distracting. Doesn't hold a candle to his older stuff. Cheetah is great, it's like a more relaxed Analord, which is one of my favorite things he's done.

Specifically the kids voices in Xmas and Minipops which I felt had so much reverb that they were cheesy and the various other vocal samples in those tracks. I think they were done well on certain tracks like CIRCLONT14, but felt unnecessary in songs like Minipops and Xmas. I don't want to seem like I don't like Syro, because I do, and it's got great songs, but I don't think it's quite as good as some of his older stuff.

CIRKLON 1 is a great follow up track, loving the EP overall
>>
anyone have a mega that isnt 192kbps from the stream
>>
the two cirklon tracks are amazing, 10/10, etc.

the rest of the tracks don't quite hold up to most of his discog and i'll probably forget about them in a few weeks. but this was mostly just a treat for the fans, not really meant to be "groundbreaking" or w/e.
>>
Really annoys me that everyone keeps wanting him to release some super groundbreaking genre transcending and date defying record and shitting on him with every new release. It's not like he's releasing shitty tracks by any means.

Aphex Twin marks his first new record in 11 months with the slow-motion bounce cooked up on the Cheetah EP for Warp.

Using the impossibly rare digital synth the Cheetah ms800 (which was discontinued in the early 90's and from what synth heads say of it, was for good measure) to create the base( bass) of each track, this relatively unknown digital synth is said to be impossibly hard to programme but those who manage to crack the code, it has the capacity to spill forth 'low-fi digital weirdness', so who better really than RDJ to tackle such a puzzling machine? The first half of the EP rolls out an unexpected squashed acidic (almost) dub techno suite with CHEETAHT2 [Ld spectrum] and CHEETAHT7b. Both revolve around a dazed 4x4 kick that spirals into view with the Cheetah's neon-crystal like synth gloss wrapping itself around the beat with a radioactive sheen that places the tracks way outside any of the recent years Aphex/AFX excursions, whilst sounding like a spun out update of early grime and sublow styles (for which Aphex was a champion on the Rephlex Grime & Grime 2 comps) imagine if early SND had moved in the direction of grime instead of UKG and you are a few inches close to what we have here. These are followed by the quickfire analogue bubbles of CHEETA1b ms800 and CHEETA2 ms800 that disappear as fast as they float out of the speakers.

The second half of the EP is sure-fire classic Aphex in the making, fan fav (check the video if you haven't seen it!) CIRKLON3 [ Kolkhoznaya mix ] mixes up a techstep funk number with the robotic blues of The Man-Machine-era Kraftwerk with the raw melancholy of the most slippery Analord acid. CIRKLON 1 speeds up the tempo but matches the vibe for crunchy half time jungle noir, here he really unleashes his programming skills to the max by expelling melodies like no other, while the keen-eared out there will note audio flashbacks to certain selected (possibly) related works. Before 2X202-ST5 brings the EP to a close with a taught skeletal shuffle that pivots around a solid snare roll whilst the bass line growls with added squelch underneath adding a slight air of psychedelic madness to the mix whilst ensuring its place as a true DJ weapon for the 6 am head splitters.

To our ears Cheetah is a continuation of the endless proof that comes with each new record that Aphex is one of the greatest experimental musicians the world has ever seen. Much like Iannis Xenakis's experiments in 1961 pioneering the use of computers to compose music, Aphex Twin in 2016 is a sound scientist whose tools others can't even begin to comprehend the workings of. By using a piece of impossibly rare equipment to compose an extended player, he has done what few others ever will, producing sounds out of the machine that, at the time of its creation, its designers could never have even dreamed of.

honestly i prefer boomkat's succinct, to the point reviews more than most actual music publications

Minus the two totally superfluous interlude tracks between side 1 and 2 it's probably the most uniformly accessible and pleasant thing he's released.
I like the weird stuff but I do think that's interesting and it's probably why Warp gave it a decent marketing push even though it doesn't really strike me as a big statement from RDJ (I do think he's got boundary-pushing stuff locked up he's going to put out, the question is when)
>>

the marketing energy that went into this vs. the other shit recently released on warp is sorta ridiculous, lol

Ha, yeah, I've been told to swallow my pride a few times. Occasionally, though, there's an instance where a release pisses off the entire staff so much that someone will be given free reign to totally slate it. I'll point at Jamie XX - In Colour for that.

>This is AT’s first official music video in over 17 years and, ironically, it was directed by a 12-year-old Aphex fan from Dublin by the name of Ryan Wyer. Aphex discovered Wyer through

Syro is one of his best albums. So soothing and gloriously complex and layered. And it's definitely among the most cohesive and consistent.
Of course SAW II is kind of too scary for me most of the time.

But yeah, if you don't like Syro you probably won't like Cheetah (though it's closer to the Analord stuff in the sense that it's much more stripped down and explicitly vintage sounding than Syro)
