Both started in the 90s, both were underground and sort of impenetrable at first, both broke out into mainstream consciousness with an (eventually) universally acclaimed work that's heavy on both textual detail and emotional sincerity. Both influenced all subsequent works in their genres. Both became a meme.

Axl Rose is already /mu/ related though.

The only people who think this are pseuds who don't actually read literary criticism. IJ had a mixed-to-positive reception upon its release and many prominent literary critics today still hold negative opinions toward it. DFW was never "underground," he was a card-carrying member of the literary establishment who had a humongous publishing deal at a major house and a massive marketing campaign for the release of IJ. Both are memes though.
