Can /mu/ recommend me any progressive rock that isn't pretentious and over-the-top theatrical? I usually listen to punk and pop, and I realized that I've never given art rock a fair shot, but I do love Television

Go listen to Peter Gabriel 3 (Melt) right now for some wonderful art rock

Listen to Magma

Hard to argue that they're not pretentious and over-the-top, but their angry jazz-metal symphonies are the perfect antidote to Dream Theatre fussiness or theatre-nerd Rush-style horseshit.

Yes - Close to the Edge

It's a little bit on the flashy side, and I wouldn't say it's completely unpretentious, but overall it's better put together and bit more humble than comparable stuff by ELP or King Crimson.

someone once posted a link to an album that sounded like a cross of surf rock and prog, light-hearted and sophisticated, but I can't remember its fuckin' name, or the band's

Van Der Graaf Generator, OP.
Really down-to-earth and rootsy.
>>
Prog just becomes folk rock if you remove the highbrow shit.
>>
>>66222266
if you don't want pretentious over the top theatrics just skip prog rock and go to post rock to hear pretentiously under the top theatrics

I mean I love prog-rock but that's kinda what it is
You won't find a prog band that isn't at least slightly pretentious and grandiose

I'd recommend you start with Gazpacho - they're modern prog / art rock; conceptual but not disgustingly pretentious (well, everything but Molok)

Probably the best prog band around nowadays who aren't senile or faux prog

Can krautrock be called prog? It's so much more interesting than prog that it's hard to believe they're related.

King Crimson - Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Starless and Bible Black, Red
Soft Machine - S/T, Volume Two, Third
Focus - Focus 3

Rush - Fly by Night
Gentle Giant - Free Hand

Anything by Camel, especially their first few albums. They're very chill and subdued for a prog band.
