Swans - The Great Annihilator and Children of God are good ones I found on here. Yea Swans are talked about all the time, but I hated The Seer and their new stuff that is supposed to be amazing.
The Great Annihilator and Children of God are two of the best gothic rock albums I've ever heard. They are amazing and you will love them.
Also, try Bad Moon Rising from Sonic Youth. I think it has some gothic rock/post-punk qualities that you would like.

While everyone waxs poetic about Swans here, they only showed up on my radar a few years ago and when I saw the size of their catalogue I didn't really know where to start. My friend was all into the Seer and I didn't like it. Then in a non-shit mu thread, I found the flowchart and really liked TGA and CoG and loved them. I don't like any other swans. Christ this board is infuriating - it really has great content and resources if you can filter out all the autism.

The Damned's best albums are straight up punk though. And noise/synth/industrial is in the same ballpark as goth rock. Bands like the Birthday Party and Joy Division kind of blur the lines between the two.

That's not true at all. I've been a long time fan of industrial, and some of the OG artists were goths that were involved in occult stuff. They did start independently, but they converged during the 80s before MTV and NIN / Manson even took off.
