What makes this so compelling/intriguing? I feel like it is some of the most mysterious and dark music out there. The lyrics are phenomenal too. Don, Aman is probably my favorite track.
>>
>>66198066
The themes and lyrics have universal appeal; everyone feels isolated and alone sometimes which is what the album is about. These four just happened to write the most succinct lyrics about it.
>>
>>66198172
I find it very interesting because all of the songs are about isolation in some way but each one touches on a different aspect of that isolation. And the vocal delivery helps with that stark, dour mood the music generates, makes it feel like someone is in the room talking to you. But in a creepy way.
>>
>>66198558
Most definitely. Five songs looking at it in five different ways. Breadcrumb Trail is self-imposed isolation via doing something new/taking risks: the narrator didn't stay in line and at the carnival and got laid all day instead. Nosferatu Man is about a vampire who can only see his love at night, and indeed ends up killing her. Washer is about a man saying goodbye to his love and leaving. Good Morning, Captain is about all the isolation eventually circling back around to wanting to not be alone anymore.
>>
>>66198734
don, aman is the social anxiety anthem.

This album is boring fucking trash. I seriously don't get why it gets as much praise as it gets. There isn't a single original or exciting musical idea on the entire album.

God damn I hate this album.
>>
>>66198972
I agree
Doesn't live up to the hype imo, maybe the critics who panned this garbage were right
>>
>>66198972
Agree 100%. The worst album /mu/ ever got me to listen to.

So you bumped into two other plebs and they happen to share your pleb opinions, that doesn't make you less of a pleb. I bet you don't even understand the historical significance of the album as a bridging point between post-hardcore and first wave post-rock you plebe-machine plebe-0-2000 plebeathon plebescum.

incredible tempo changes, plays with irregular time signatures, relatable and atmospheric lyrics

spiderland is one of the best guitar records of the last 25 years and is somehow both beautifully colourful and starkly melancholy

Yeah I too have been bored to tears and can relate, why I remember this one time, when I was listening to slint, Christ that shit was boring

If Spiderland is so obviously a masterpiece why do you have to defend it so much an get angry if other people don't like it

the words you used were fine friend

boring, trash, unexciting, all solid words

unfortunately you forgot to connect them in any meaningful way to the thing you were describing and so instead of a convincing argument you've just got a collection of adjectives

but no, nice adjectives well done
>>
>>66200192
Makes perfect sense. If the album was unoriginal, you should be able to provide plenty of examples of music that sounds like it from before the time it was made.

also spiderland is about atmosphere.
>>
>>66200261
Adjectives are helpful in describing what you think of the music
>Spiderland is boring.
Ok yes this is a sentence you can use to describe Spiderland and it is your opinion good job. But it's not an argument. It's just a statement and you need to explain what about Spiderland is boring.

Everything, it's a boring album

>>
>>66200672
no you haven't. you're fucking new

>matter of opinion
the fact that this album is original is objective fact to anyone who knows shit about music history. name 3 albums that sound remotely like spiderland pre-1990
>>
>>66198066
Is there a more perfect moment in music than the last two minutes of Good Morning, Captain?
>>
>>66200770
>>66200620 here. From reading this thread, it seems to me that everything people like about this album is something I dislike about it, to an extent. The guitar tones and tired, worn-out vocals during the spoken/whispery parts to me just create music devoid of emotion, aimlessly meandering about and concluding with no sense of sonic progress or satisfaction. Don Aman is the biggest offender of this imo. Even the more intense bits, like the rollercoaster segment on Breadcrumb Trail, just feels like that kind of mindless teenage anger that accomplishes nothing. I can understand how this can create a captivating emotional atmosphere, but it just doesn't resonate with me, for one reason or the other. I don't hate the album, I think Washer is a pretty good track, but I just don't see it as the amazing album it's frequently heralded as. It's been a while since I gave it a shot though, I just started another listen cause of this thread.

Thank you anon, for actually backing up your opinion. Now I can listen to it with your criticisms in mind. It's been awhile since I've heard it too.

>like the rollercoaster segment on Breadcrumb Trail, just feels like that kind of mindless teenage anger that accomplishes nothing

Friend from this segment alone you have a case of not understanding the album. Breadcrumb Trail isn't about anger. Breadcrumb Trail is about how doing something different/taking a risk/off the beaten path, and how doing that may result in a different experience than the norm. Instead of waiting in line, the narrator goes to the tent and gets laid all day.
>>
>>66201482
thats too bad you find it emotionally devoid
don aman is literally every party I went to in highschool
>The light
Their backs
The conversations
The couples, romancing, so natural
His friends stare
With eyes like the heads of nails
The others
Glances
With amusement
With evasion
With contempt
So distant
With malice
For being a sty in their engagement

although I'm thinking now that not being able to relate to this is probably a good thing
>>
>>66201547
I understand, I was just using that segment as it was the first example that came to mind of a part where the album uses that kind of harsh guitar tone, which is moreso what I was referring to with that description.
>>
just listen to this album high

it will all make sense
>>
>>66201561
I didn't go to many high school parties, I'm just not a party person in general so more often than not I cut my losses and stayed at home playing videogames with my online friends and having a laugh. On reflection it might just be my own life and not being able to relate that makes me struggle with this album.
>>
>>66201162
nope. it's the culmination of everything on the album and ends it perfectly.

Spiderland is GOAT
>>
>>66201574
Interesting. I discussed a long time ago a similar thing with another anon who said something along the lines of distorted guitars don't exactly convey any kind of emotion. I kind of get what you're saying.

>>66201618
It's just the perfect fucking ending. An entire album about loneliness and the last words on the album are "I MISS YOUUUUUUUAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH"
>>
>>66201519
Oh also here are my two cents. I personally think the washed out guitars and the "tired" monotone vocals add to the power of the album. You say it's meandering and devoid of emotion but that's kinda exactly the tone they were going for. It's supposed to be depressing and the lyrics about alienation and social anxiety add to that, and not depressing in the Red House Painters way. Depressing in the "All I can feel is soul-crushing nothingness" way. It's a monochrome album with a monochrome album cover. I find it to be quite captivating though I understand why you disagree.
>>
>>66201642
yeah, it seems as though it has a purpose in my mind though; directionless anger at one's own shitty isolated situation. I can see how it fits thematically, it's just not to my taste.
