As far as Jethro Tull goes, I think Aqualung is a better album for the Spotify I-fancy-listening-to-just-one-track generation, but Thick as a Brick is better to listen to all the way through.

Nice to see Space Shanty get some love, Khan (and Egg for that matter) are an underrated outfit.

Other complaints: LTIA deserves to be in top tier, and DSOTM and Animals are vastly overrated and barely even classify as prog in any case. WYWH on the other hand I do think deserves its place. I think Mirage is a bit underrated, Camel are a poor man's Gentle Giant in my view, competent but hardly breaking any new ground. Also needs more ELP, it's fashionable to hate them because of Punk and the Works/Love Beach era but the debut, Tarkus, Trilogy and Brain Salad Surgery are all superb albums. Same goes for Wakeman from Six Wives to Criminal Record.

In Absentia is indeed more pop than FOABP. I can't say it's a good album either, it has like 5 good songs?
FOABP doesn't have any bad songs and Anesthetize is really fucking good.

>Brain Salad Surgery is terrible. I like their classical covers though

See, that's the complete opposite of my opinion. Their Copland stuff like Hoedown I think worked well, but the Mussorgsky, Prokofiev and hymnal stuff they insisted on covering was just a mish-mash that didn't improve or elaborate on the original for me. Emerson's insistence on shoehorning in the Hammond doesn't help, it and the Mellotron have dated in a way that the Moog (by virtue of still being unique) hasn't so much. I think that's why I prefer Wakeman's classicism to Emerson's, at least pre about 1977 (after which point prog died)

PT is discussed here fairly often though, they are the only modern prog bands /mu/ cares about with The Mars Volta and Tool
There are pretty polarising opinions on them though

It took me five years to realize that this was the best thing to ever come out of prog rock. I think when I was sixteen I even thought Tales From Topographic Oceans was Yes's best work, with my logic being something to the effect of, "Yeah, Close to the Edge is great, but the second half isn't as good as the first, and how can you argue with four twenty minute god-tier songs?" Now Close to the Edge is my favorite album and Tales From Topographic Oceans is among my least favorite. It is the definition of pretension in music and is basically what cause punk rock. It assumes so much importance that it lacks. It arouses a desire for the highest without fulfilling it. I used to think Yes made a mistake in not going for the "epic closing track" on Close to the Edge, but now I realize that they couldn't have possibly followed up the title track in a more perfect way. The last two songs on there have such an organic, humble approach to filling out the rest of the album, and that's how Yes should have gone about following up the album Close to the Edge if they were going to, but instead, Tales From Topographic Oceans is like, "LMAO we're totally topping Close to the Edge right now XD."

Relayer had a similar structure to CTTE, but with Wakeman and Bruford gone I just don't think it hit the same heights. I know some people absolutely adore Gates of Delirium, but I personally find it to be more of an interesting experiment than a track to rival CTTE. Opinions are divided on Going for the One, but in my view Awaken is the only great track, and it's rather let down by all the other tracks (Turn of the Century and Parallels are OK but not life-changing). Everything from Tormato onwards can be discarded.

Thing about Tales is that I genuinely think that The Revealing Science of God is only just a tiny fraction worse than Close to the Edge, and that fraction can be explained by Alan White not being as incredible as Bill Bruford. After they had done their "standard" epic track I think they just lost focus. A golden rule with Yes Album and onwards Yes is that Anderson provides the concept and Howe charts out the actual execution, and I just don't think Howe had the kind of stomach for cleverly devising four epics that Jon had, since all he had to do was take some LSD and read the Siddartha and the songs wrote themselves. The result is 3 sides of rubbish to follow one good side, with a couple of good motifs or harmonies here and there. A real shame. I also think Nous Sommes Du Soleil is overrated, we expect more from Yes than a pretty harmonic vocal line. Maybe if The Who had done it it might have been noteworthy, but it's too otherwise unremarkable to be good Yes music.

How do you feel about Wakeman's solo stuff? (Or for that matter Squire's, Howe's and Anderson's?) For me, Six Wives, parts of Journey, Arthur and Judas Iscariot from Criminal Record as as good as the best of Yes, albeit different, and indeed usually have the rest of the band playing on them anyway. Different, much more classically oriented and western rather than eastern in inspiration, but just as well thematically and structurally executed. I'd love to hear your thoughts.
