It's America Day, go imperialize some nations and eat hamburgers.

Listen to your library, show off your backlog, babble about new music, tell us what you have been listening to today and what you will listen to in the following month, continue Jangle's Thrift Tourney (it's a pipe dream), just let the good times flow.

Golden Pawn - This Lake Is a Misty Mirror (2013)
>drone, ambient

Fairly middling and predictable Bandcamp drone up until the last track, which is a really interesting and comfy droney psych folk track, lots of nice textures and neat instrumentation. Since this track takes up the whole entire B-side of the tape, I couldn't give this too low of a score, but the whole entire A-side just really is not all too enjoyable to listen to, very generic ambient that just sounds like someone dicking around with reverb and paulstretching in Audacity. Decent enough, but just boring and done better by about 8,000 other artists. But that last track, amazing stuff.

alright while people are still hunting for images, i'm gonna give a summary of what the tourney is.
i did something like this before, but dropped out of it because i'm a /cuckboy/.
it's going to be a team based tourney, with 6 people on each team. there's going to be a challenge each round. each person in the teams will contribute a release that fit's the challenge's criteria. the team with the lowest overall score has two lowest scoring people in their team for that round eliminated, the team with the second lowest score loses one person, and the winning team gets an advantage that will vary from round to round. repeat until there is one winner.
>>
When I was in high school Fall Out Boy were annoying emo bullshit to me. I just listened to Folie A Deux though and I actually really like it.

I still hate the rest of their work prior to it but I'm impressed. It sound much more mature than things like "Dance Dance" but still within the confines of their style.

Anybody here have thoughts on them, the album or other bands who have impressed you unexpectedly?

early as in like From Under the Cork Tree, i've always had a soft spot for some of the songs from that, "Sugar, We're Goin Down" is a pretty solid song. but those recent tracks like "My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark" and "Centuries" that i keep fucking hearing on the radio are dreadful.

>>
>>66159745
Oh
O-ok

What even did I rec you? Was there a chart?
>>
>>66159151
ah yeah that album is far and away my favorite by them

im was thinking, how much does the internet have to do with the fact that bands of their ilk are even looked down upon? what if it wasnt around for them? i mean, sites like this one developed a terrible reactionary culture, or maybe pitchfork before it became billboard a couple years ago but idk?
like im just looking at rym, comparing their ratings to those of like, Styx, Kiss, AC/DC, etc that all have pretty decent averages but they're the same kinda timely bread and butter, what if the then-would-have-been of metal kids and /mu/ kids got to shit memes on them at the time?
is it just the zeitgeist? idg how zeitgeist even fucking works

are they actually worse? no way in hell.

what im saying is there was literally nothing wrong with emo pop and scenecore, nor nu metal, at least not _that_ wrong
and also that my perception of critical reception is skewed by mostly remaining comfortably seated in the /mu/ bubble for, well, /mu/ stuff, or rym, same fucking thing, it's just the demographic they cater to

i noticed how this seems kinda strongly influenced by MBDTF

Apparently it is about RYM tags, which is stupid if you ask me, but rules are rules
>>
>>66159776
you recd me 6 things. i think i gave all of them between a 6 and a 5.
>>
>>66159800
Well, I wasn't a big Internet user in high school (ten years ago now) but to me it was the aesthetic that ruined them. I know how how stupid that sounds for an aural medium but they didn't endear themselves to me like other bands did and they seemed to stand out more than the rest so I think I focused more of my attention on them. For the sake of not being closed-minded I should probably give them another shot, but I feel that they'd just remind me of times I'd rather forget.

alright last one before bed

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds = Let Love In
somewhat average to bad first half that is absolutely well and truly redeemed by it's second half
could not give a care in the world about the first couple of tracks (bar Nobody's Baby Now, which is a banger), but the second half is soooo fucking good (even the Do you Love Me reprise, where the track was awful the first time round it gains something by being played at a crawlspeed, the vocal phrase just before the chorus and including the chorus is still a bit dodge though).

Yo La Tengo - And then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out
Fucking serene m8, really satisfying ambient pop, not much else to say, I fucking loved it
songwriting is good, lyrics have the perfect amount of feels and the guitar tone isn't saturated in reverb or distortion, it does what I like and it does it very well

Didn't post for a few days as I was stuck hiking and shit in the mountains. Fun times though and still got to listen to some pretty dope music. Also I Still need recs for Wonky and Glitch Pop so help me out, /daily/. Also White Noise is getting really good now that I've gotten to the second part. The Event really spices things up and the whole shift in writing style from super spacey and jumpy to something a lot more streamlined is interesting.

> Uchu Conbini - Mawaru Keshiki no Naka ni
Firstly, the fact this this is tagged as Midwest Emo on RYM is hilarious. Secondly, this is really cool. Its techinically very good, but the songwriting is where it gets me. Its like if they tried to make a ballad-filed indie pop record and thought it'd sound cooler if they made the guitars and drums math-rocky. They were right.

> Wave Racer - Rock U Tonite/Stoopid
While not really Wonky, I dug this a little bit. It sounded a lot more like the "Bubblegum Bass" or whatever you want to call it that's coming from labels like PC Music right now and its done decently. Didn't realize it was a single going into it so I guess I was a little bit disappointed by only having two songs to work with here and neither did anything crazy for me.

> The Books - The Way Out
Thought this was honestly kinda corny. The whole spiritual vibe of the spoken word samples really felt overdone after a little while and while I liked A Cold Freezin' Night for its punchy percussion, the rest of it didn't do too much for me musically.

>Soul's True Love - Disk One: Lost Aaraff - Concert From the Genyasai Festival
>Free improvisation

The first track is called "Hell of Screams". That's a pretty good description. Haino has quite an impressive range of screams. Deep screams. High pitched squeals. Long screams. Short yelps. And this is for half an hour, backed by some pretty intense drumming and some pretty frantic keyboard playing. Despite being nearly half an hour long, it doesn't really get old.

The second track, entitled "The Lost Judgment", is a less fun version of the first one, and the fidelity takes a huge hit. Haino picks up a guitar and his screams are reserved for special occasions, and the drummer seems to step back and let Haino and whoever is playing keys take over. Speaking of keys, the keyboard on this track is a very nice 60s organ most of the time. I recall hearing Haino's biggest influence was The Doors, so that makes sense.

This was apparently one of Haino's first performances, which is pretty impressive.

Basically, this sounds like what The Doors would be if they formed a reunion in hell: great!

I'm not very big into noise (even if I've listened to my share of edgy tapes) because it mainly goes against my view of music that actually matters and, most of the time, is just not rewarding. Of course there are exceptions, but most of it is simply not remarkable. With that taken into consideration, I listened to the full album and here's my thoughts. The production is good, a thing that i like in noise is when it sounds clean: Untitled is a good track even if it could improve with more dynamics and a sense of conclusion, The rest is just basic distortion, and a lot of other noise records out there i feel use that same sound and it's passé by now.
I did like the track with the voice samples because it sounded like a more serious meme montage video (hearing wombo combo as a sample wouldn't have been out of place).
But I do know how fun it is to make noise, I also know it's not as fun for listening. Keep going though, and don't be afraid to make it spicier. I'm also not the right person for it too so don't get offended.

CHALLENGE 1:
Each team will give a series of albums showing music through the decades.
One member of each team will rec me an album from each decade. These albums don't have to have an overall cohesive theme for their team, they just have to sound the best. However I will give bonus points if a team somehow manages to organize a consistent theme.
EPs and Albums are accepted, but no singles, compilations, or albums over 3 hours in length.
Live albums and Bootlegs are allowed.
Only the date of release is factored in. No archival recordings. (example: you can't rec an album that was recorded in the 60s, but released in 2012 for the 60s section, but you could rec it for the 2010s section.)
for any other questions, just ask me.
Reccing albums from the 60s:
Trans God
Jimmy
Herb
Mark

70s:
Ruggles
Cunt
Weener

80s:

90s:

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Your Funeral ... My Trial (1986)
>post-punk, gothic rock

Definitely my favorite Cave release I've heard so far, but there are still a fair amount of things I don't like about it. Firstly, I just can't get into Cave's vocals, they're just too hammy for me. They fit the music fairly well, but something about them just doesn't vibe well with me. Secondly, the production on this album is godawful, I guess it does work well at creating a very foggy, nightmare-like atmosphere, but every single instrument just mushes together, there's no definition. Lastly, every xylophone hit on "She Fell Away" just repels me, and I don't know why. Other than those complaints, this is a very solid album, super dark, super gritty, the story telling is nice, I like the guitar work. I'll definitely check out more Cave to see if any of his other stuff gels with me like this.

2.5+
