Haven't been in school too long. Only in my second semester. The level of reading that's expected from us is pretty abysmal. Reading comprehension, writing, critical thinking in general are all skills that most students seem to lack. Sorely. You described the class that assigned The Stranger as being a high level course. Which is disheartening to me. I haven't been asked to do anything that's really challenged me. I have higher expectations of my academic setting than it has of me. And that too is incredibly disheartening. Bordering on disillusioning. I'm just a little dissatisfied with my college experience so far. And based on all I hear, it doesn't seem like it's going to get any better. That's all.

And yes, like I originally said, I see both sides of the argument. They're related. Doesn't mean I think it's an example of existentialism.

I hate Lana Del Rey so much. Her music caters to people who think that they're so different for listening to her and how that it's "real music". It's slow pop music where she whispers a bunch. It's basically the same shit that plays on the radio. It's not different. It's not original. It doesn't make you cool or into music when you listen to it.

Nobody is going to think you are smart because you think your "introduction to architecture" and "biology 1" classes are easy. Write a 40 page paper then tell me you are not challenged. Stop being so fucking confident and close minded in your intellect and maybe you will learn something.
>>
>>66140504
Had to do a research paper on it senior year, so I got pretty familiar with it. Unfortunately, it was mostly analyzing symbols and other boring literature stuff. Not as fun as some of the papers I've had to do for English. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and nonfiction (Nuclear Energy) were practically me over-exaggerating opinions to the point where I couldn't be taken seriously, but still backed up by the text.

>>
>>66140550
Upper level, high level, sorry I made a mistake. I wrote a 158 page paper during the first half of the semester. Forty was on the short end of what I wrote. I was told I was taking things too seriously. That's alright. I'm not trying to get anybody to think I'm smart. I don't think I'm smart. I get plenty of reading. Mostly outside of college on my own time. Some of it challenges me, gets me thinking. But I have yet to have that experience in the classroom is all. I don't like these assumptions you're making about me. They're wrong. But that's no surprise. I have an open mind. Open enough to learn what I want to. Again, mostly on my own time. And I'm also far from confident. I told my instructors as much. I was never proud of anything I wrote for them. But they were impressed. That's enough I guess. Sorry for the long-winded response.

>>66140613
I like the papers I write where I'm asked to critically analyse a text. Those are fun for me. Guess we're a little different in that area. But still, I could go for that sort of thing. I've been meaning to read Cuckoo's Nest for a while now too. How'd you like it?

Cuckoo's Nest is good. Not the best thing I've ever read, but certainly miles above most of the stuff that I had to read in HS English. Give it a read if you can pick it up at a used book store for cheap; I think it really shows how much a change in the mentality of a population can bring about real, actual change. Not to mention how it constantly hits you over the head with the theme of being optimistic regardless of circumstance, which is a welcomed change to the endless supply of "everything's shit" books.

Homie. to get a degree you have to take certain kinds of classes to fill certain types of requirements. Only a delusional person would pay for a degree in philosophy.
I am getting a degree in Environmental Science but taking that course fulfilled a requirement to graduate.
I also took that class over another because it is interesting to me, is more abstract, and heavily involves class discussions, which for me means I will get a much higher grade and learn more.

Oh okay, I understand. I might take a philosophy course as a free elective in a couple semesters if I don't find any other offering more interesting.

>>66141356
It was a 158 pages of research folded into critical analysis. It was one of two papers I wrote last semester that exceeded one hundred pages. I don't like that attitude. It was far from impossible. Everything I wrote was pertinent. Never straying far from its subject and thesis. I was pretty well oriented. The school's subscriptions to online databases, literary magazines and so on proved really helpful. I don't know man, it was worth it. I don't think I'd do it again but those papers are definitely ones I can go back to, improve upon. Maybe not recycle in later classes, but yeah, they're instructive. I learned from them.

The subjective appreciation for most of those things are pretty shallow, which even their fans will admit. I love 80's action movies in the way my dad like 80's action movies, but I would not say my tastes are of the caliber as local shoe salesman who likes Rohmer. It's more to do with admittance of where you are in the greater scope of taste, and to disassociate such things with "worse and better".

What was the paper on? Just curious.

Also, re: The Stranger. Where I live, it's obligatory high school reading. We talked a lot about it in class and it's one of the go-to subjects for school essays. That being said, now that I'm at uni I can totally see how it's viable oblig reading for philosophy courses. Even if most people are familiar with it (or should be, anyway), it's a work that should be analysed from different perspectives. We also had to read Camus for uni (for Literary Theory), though this time it was A Happy Death. We tried to approach it from different theoretical vantage points (Marxism, psychoanalysis, feminist theory, etc.) and got pretty different conclusions from each one. Reading The Stranger on your own and reading it in the context of a course on Existentialism, where certain themes of the work are more emphasised than others, are two rather different experiences.
