Invention of new musical concepts are only significant if the ideas are significant. Wagner was an undisputed master of Leitmotif, but few composers outside of film after him really take it up.
Geesumptkunstwerk is literally telling composers that in order to be good ccomposers they should also learn how to be electricians and plumbers. I know of only one or two examples of composers that have taken that meme seriously.
