For the guy interested in Sunn O))) tones, getting baritone strings is what you want. I just recorded this clip, it's a jazzmaster with baritone strings. So you don't even need special pickups or anything.

Anyone have experience with those classic player jazzmasters? None of the shops in my area have them and I'm a "try before I buy" person. I've also heard the MIJ ones can be found on eBay for maybe a few hundred bucks more

Anyone got an experiences?

sick are you using any reverb or delay? I love the overtones towards the middle, almost sounds like a pad effect.
>>
>>66078522

He didn't do any weight relief, he just discovered the weight relief accidentally when he added the contour and tried to make it look neat.
>>
>>66078611
That's one right here>>66078223

I honestly love it, the build quality is perfect. Great wood, hardware etc.. The main difference is the slightly closer trem for a better break angle and the p90 style pickups, which I personally like for a warmer sound.

They're the best deals in used Jazzmasters I think. If you absolutely must have vintage correct tone and specs the classic 60s Jazzmaster is the way to go. I would skip the MIJs they're overpriced for what they are. I've sold every MIJ offset I've had over the years.
>>
>>66078613
I'm heading to bed but from memory I'm running a four layer multi delay into two reverbs. It's a stereo sound. The left reverb is different to the right and there's a slow pan to make it feel spacious. With the delay and pan off, and some filtering it sounds like this.

If you ask again (might be a new thread) in about 8-12 hours I'll be happy to explain any of it in depth if you like.

not trying to be dick rider here, but i just got pic related and am interested in doing the pickup arrangement the mustang guy on here did with theirs (lipstick neck/single coil-sized humbucker bridge). which single coil-sized humbuckers are superior? i'm probably just going to do a gfs in the neck since lipsticks look like their all the same cheap crap on the inside.

I'm not saying having gear is bad, but there's absolutely no point in arguing between two of the most popular things. Half of the thread's already pointless gear posting, we don't need more of it. And we don't need to keep arguing on this either, we're kinda shitting up the thread right now.
>>
>>66080503
Gibson Custom Shop prices are ridiculous. I guess someone is buying them though.

>>66080589

>>

I was referring to the bridge configuration, not the pickups themselves. Those are just regular pickups. If you add a single coil in series your can switch between humbucker and single coil.
>>
>>66080524
this. no one cares about what guitar you're playing or what gear you use. it doesn't contribute to the threads and discussions. it's like going to /fit/ and have someone ask you what you bench, and all you can answer is, "oh, amn Olympic Hammer Strength steel bar with German ball bearings and lead infused plates."
it's completely missing the point.

I've heard that femder hardware is overpriced for what you get. I don't recall the brands people were recommending for this stuff though. I have seen Wilkinson for 3-saddle bridges which I'm not a fan of are cheap and folks even put them on fenders.
>>
>>66081041
No way, remember it's the standard for $1500 and up guitars. It's all high quality. If anything it's a bit underpriced. You can get an American tele bridge for around $35, pickups for around $40 each. Knobs and plate for around $20.

That's pretty cheap for quality hardware. Now boutique hardware is another story....

I've had bad luck with the lower end wilkinson stuff, typical cheap chromed stuff, even on their "solid steel" tremolo for strats and it's not much less either.
>>
>>66081165

I have one of those $1500 Strats and it really isn't all that high quality. The neck and body are great nowadays but I still go for aftermarket bridges/trems. The electronics are good, but the Fender switches and CTS pots really aren't the end of the world... Schaller makes nicer switches in my opinion. Same goes for those oil-bath tuners Fender uses nowadays, I mean, it's pretty good but there's a lot better out there.

Definitely not underpriced, you're paying for a brand, they're still factory instruments -as good as they are- and there's a lot more out there.
>>
>>66081439
You can definitely get better stuff out there but you're going to pay for it. For the money I don't think there's anything better than Fender, seriously it's only marginally more expensive than cheap Asian shit. If you want to splurge there's Callaham,Glendale, Don Mare, Jason Lollar etc all better but way more expensive.

What tremolos/bridges do you think are better than Fenders at the same price?
>>
My mustang has a ground issue I believe. When both pickups are in the off position, it buzzes loudly, but then stops when touching a metal screw, string, the bridge plate, or control plate. I have no idea how to go about fixing this, but I want to do it myself to save money. I'm sure I seem uniformed because I am, so save me the criticism and help me fix my guitar plz

>>
>>66081543
Gotoh and Wilkinson have great trems. I'm not sure what the Fender trem goes for nowadays but I got my VS100-N for 50 bucks from a guy. As far as Fender parts go, they've always been the expensive option when I order parts online. Take those plastic bobbins for example. Boston(brand) sells them for a buck for 3 while Fender charges you 5 bucks. Then there's stuff like the chrome pickup covers for the Fender basses. Last time I checked you pay a whopping fifty bucks for the ones with a Fender logo while the Boston one costs 15.

As for the trem, I don't think Fender's is all that great. I certainly didn't feel, hear or notice a difference between the USA trem and the one on my classic vibe.

Anyone ever build a guitar?

My Jacksons tone knob doesn't work, so I opened it up to find out what's wrong and the 2a223k capacitor lead broke. A quick Google and I found bunches of 2a223J capacitors but few K. What's the difference between 2a223k and 2a223j? Are they Interchangeable? Are they needed? Could I just connect the wires and eliminate the capacitor?
>>
>>66081924
fuck you dude do your own research
>>
>>66081924
I didn't open any of those
>>
>>66081938
You should be able to connect whatever remains of the lead and it should work. If there's not enough wire left to connect to, you don't need the same capacitor, just the same capacitor value. Your cap is probably .022 microfarads or .047 microfarads.

Anyway post a pic. If you want to eliminate the tone knob you cab disconnect it or just leave the cap off, either way it won't do anything.

Excellent pickups. It's very difficult to find better machine wound pickups assuming they have the specs you're looking for. Just make sure you know what you want. A lot of the cooler looking pickups can bait you into a niche sort of pickup you might not like.

>>
>>66082076
That black wire running over the plate should lead to some wires attached to the underside of the bridge or bridge pins routed through the body, the wire needs to be soldered to the bridge to earth it for less hum and interference
>>
>>66082076
Take a picture of where the black wires lead. Take the pickguard off next. You are looking for a hole used as a tunnel from underneath the bridge to the rest of the circuit.

Alright, here's how you can test a connection with that. Get two lengths of wire, and strip one end of each normally, and the other end about a inch. wrap the long end of one of the wires around the sleeve of an instrument cable, the other long end around the tip. Turn your amp volume all the way down and plug the other end of the cable together. Touch the short ends of the wires together to make sure it's working. Be careful not to touch any bare wire to avoid false positives. Now, touch one wire to the potentiometer, and the other to the bridge. If there's no loud buzz, your wire is loose, and you need to take off the bridge and make sure it's secure. If it does buzz loudly, then something else is wrong.

Make sure you turn your amp all the way down when you do this to avoid damaging your speaker.
>>
>>66083151
plug the other end in*

i dunno what happened there.

Are there any Ted Greene tier Bass books out there for learning bass?

My little brother started teaching himself bass and works really hard, actually practices scales and reads about music theory on his own time.
I want to buy him a book to start working through to step up his play that what help with both technique and application. He's transcribing modern baseball new school punk songs on his own, but I showed him vulfpeck and he says he wants to learn how to play bass like that, because if he could, all the punk songs in the world would be easy. Really want to help him out, his attitude is great for learning. I'm a guitar and woodwind player, not a great bassist. Thanks guys

>>
>>66083462
You probably are gonna want more than one pickup type. HSH can do alright, HSP90 is probably best, I've got SHP90 because I like the tele bridge.

Anyway really you don't need more than one pickup in the bridge to get anything you want.

If you wanna be really cool a p-rail in the bridge can get most of what you want.

Oh yeah, I guess a single coil or p90 in the neck is better for some blooze stuff.
>>
>>66083493
Well, you're gonna need to test that your fix worked at some point anyway, so you should go buy a multimeter. They cost like $5.

>>
>>66083618
I honestly don't think they are great for surf. Grunge can be accomplished very well in the middle position. 70s soft rock...meh. Another one to throw in the middle position and get by on.

The main thing I want pointing out was that more pickups=more options. Most teles might not be the perfect guitar for everything, like post-punk or alt leads which really like a humbucker in the bridge, but mine can do those a bit better with a "strat" position built in.

Also, 95% of guitars can't do Queen's lead tones very well. You need a series wired option for a lot of those songs.

You just need a hundred goddamn switches and pickups of you want something close to a guitar that can do everything. And still, the prevalence of the bridge position makes this tough. Though a bridge p-rail will get you pretty close, I don't think it's great for country.

I think it's all about the quality of materials, number of output jacks, kind of output jacks (typical BOSS pedals take 9v at 100 mA, but a lot of fancier digital pedals like the Strymon Big Sky or whatever might need 9v at 300 mA, for example; some pedals take 12v or even 18v), brand name, and "isolated" can mean several different things, I believe. I'm no expert but some pedals say they're isolated, but they still daisy-chain output jacks, other pedals mean each output jack is isolated from each other (which I think offers less opportunity for noise or whatever). Somebody correct me if I'm wrong about any of this. I'm totally not an electrical engineer.

hello friends,

I am embarrassed to admit that I cannot make of the amplification? I plugged it into the instrument but I do not understand what the difference is between a "cabinet" and "amplifier," and how this relates to the Reaper interface. I am a simple boy making only bleep in Fruity Loops.torrent. When I use Fruity Loops.torrent sound comes out ok, but internet told me use Reaper, they say, and drag amplifier and stack into Le Pou 2, But I not understand. Sometimes bars happen but not sound.

Someone please explain when 1969 what plug guitar into to make noise come out?

In return I share 500 kick drum samples organized by key!!!

its still not a great guitar a professional musician would use so you will eventually get a better one anyways and at that point the yamaha won't have a lot of resell value. keep your shitty strat until you can afford a good guitar, maybe a used one. you should be able to get a used mim strat for like 400 and if you like the hss setup for some reason those sell for even less. if you can't afford that but still want something new right now invest into good pickups. you don't need to change all 3 at once, you can just get a good one for the bridge or something. it will make a big difference in sound and you can keep it. it has resell value and you can use it in your other guitars in the future because its a quality item.

I didn't pay a gorillion dollars for it. I sort of paid nothing. It is the best fuzz I've ever played, though.

If I was moderately rich or some hardcore collector already filled with rare and expensive pedals, yeah, I'd say it's more than worth it.

For most your regular players, especially the poor students still living with their parents of /gg/, no, not really.

People just need to understand really (and this is a very basic real world concept that applies to pretty much any industry where are there are entry and high-end product level distinctions) that the relation cost-to-benefit in gear isn't a linear one. It's like pic related, the more you pay the less you get from it. It's up to each particular individual to decide at which point it stops being beneficial for himself and that's why some people argue over and over about the same bullshit regarding price and value.

Your guitar plugs into the pream section of an amplifier, where EQ and shit happens, then it goes to the power amp section where power amps happen, then it goes to a speaker cabinet where it speaks out of the cabinet.
>>
>>66084560
Nice values and labels on that graph
>>
>>66084655
There is no universal graph that can be used to disclose the specific relation of values and tangible benefits to every product in the world. Maybe not even for a single specific product model.

If you can't understand what the graph means then the average /gg/ user is even dumber than I thought.
>>
>>66084695
Nice mansplaining your inadequacies. Why don't you join the 21st century? It's 2016.
>>
>>66084648

ok so preamp changes the analog (?) signal slightly, it's like the pots on the guitar except more complex

then it goes to the part of the amplifier that makes the signal have more current or something? so it can drive the speaker wire

and the cabinet is a big speaker? so what's a head, and how come they don't just combine the speaker and the amp?
>>
>>66084695
Graphs are visual representation of data.
A graph without data is null and means nothing.
If you can't understand that, then the average /gg/ user is even dumber than I thought.
>>
>>66084738
Oh my, I really hope that's some really bad attempt at trolling. lol.
>>

nah brah, you just gotta understand that it's a sigmoidal graph in which the slope is always decreasing, ie f'(x) < 0, which means u should spend $42.00 dollars on your first guitar because that's exactly where the graph begins.
>>
>>66084736
A head is usually a preamp and a power amp put together into one unit. Sometimes there is another (optional) input and output between the preamp and power amp sections of a head, so you can put effects after the preamp.

A speaker and an amp combined is a combo amp. So they do do that.

so I'm still confused:

>IMPORTANT: Please keep in mind that some of the amp sims listed below come without built-in cab sims. That is like listening to a guitar straight through the amp, without using a cabinet. Which is actually a good thing, since it gives you the opportunity to use your favorite virtual guitar amp with your favorite cabinet.

how the fuck do you listen to a guitar through an amp without a cabinet if the cabinet is the thing with the speaker on it?

I'm thinking of switching the pickguard on pic related with a gold one and aged white pup covers/knob.

What do you guys think? Any other suggestions for combinations?

Any good guides for learning how to get good amp sound e.g where to set amps and how to use the controls for what kinda songs ?
>>
>>66085318
Speakers will color the sound differently depending on the brand , size, number, material which is why cab sims exist. A same amp through a 2x12" Celestion will not sound the same as a 1x15" Jensen for instance.

reddit has a sub called tabs where people might tab something out for you, also some anon used to have a thing of fiver a site where you pay 5$ for anything, he would tab it for you

might be a good opportunity to ear learn and watch live to tab it your self

They're new, I don't think anyone on /gg/ has even tried one but it would be nice to have some first impressions. The specs are similar to those of a Squier precision but I suspect the finish might be better. It definitely sounds good in the namm reviews and the price is reasonable.

read your amps manual, the terms amps use are not consistent. Amp manuals are usually very short.

Anyone here knows anything about building/fixing pedals?

I have an analog delay pedal with a built-on power supply that can get the repeats as long as 1200ms.

I just realized, however, that now the most it does is around 600ms. The shortest delay time now is a bit fucked and doesn't sound as slapback-ish as it did before. Apart from that it still works normally.

Only thing I have to add is that it plugs directly into my wall socket and for the past months the electricity in my house has been utter shit.

Pic related is a gut shot.

Any advice on what it could be, specifically? Really appreciate it.

Unless they are Mesa Boogies but those manuals are fun to read.

Same model, it's a pic I pulled from Google.

I did open it, however, but didn't mess around too much since I'm not really well versed on this. I did, however, measure the TIME potentiometer (which is a 100K Dual pot like pic related) and while it was with it still on the circuit, with the knob turned all the way to the maximum delay possible (fully CCW), it's only reading 36K (and reads at 0K when all clockwise), though I could only measure the top connections and I don't really know how dual pots work.

I also thought the 0K reading for the shortest delay position reading was weird since it does make the delay disappear completely when fully clockwise/on the shortest setting, and before the problem there was still delay in that position, a very fast and beautiful slapback echo.

Any insight?

normally when you record a guitar you'd have a microphone in front of a speaker cabinet. without the speakercabinet the sound would be very unlistenable, it colors the sound a lot and the microphone does too. some software like guitar rig 5 and bias or amplitube has a cab sim integrated, when you go with free plugins - they mostly don't. but honestly the lepou amp sims like the lecto and the hybrit are way better than what guitar rig and those guys are trying to sell you. just get a cab sim like http://www.vst4free.com/free_vst.php?id=1790
or lecab. and then load a good impulse response into it (that is the actual cab simulation, lecab and nadir just load them in). these are really good with the lecto amp sim https://www.dropbox.com/s/zq2yufvz46tn4w0/Catharsis.zip (just pick out the one that you like the best, there are different ones recorded with different mics etc) and theres a pack floating around these threads called good cabs 1.3 or somethingi like that, those are usable aswell. the thing with amp emulation is that the sounds you get from it range from absolutely unusable to shitty. some come close though, some so close that in a blind test you probably wouldnt notice. most of the time they dont sound quite as good as an actual good miced amp though. but its enough for some bedroom recording and shit or demos. professionally i'd rather use the real thing. so the fx chain is amp sim->cab loader loaded with impulse respone.
here are some other good vst's
good tube screamer pedal (overdrive - put before ampsim)
https://www.tseaudio.com/software/tse808
the anvil and emissary are both amp sims wich are okay
http://www.igniteamps.com/en/audio-plug-ins
the lecto, made to sound like the mesa boogie dual rectifier. probably one of the best amp sims around even if you include payed sims
http://lepouplugins.blogspot.de/2010/10/lecto.html (works great with the carthasis impulse responses)

Sorry dude, I don't think there's anything I can guess from that. There are forums where you might have better luck, just be sure to give as much info as possible and upload a gut shot.

The basic method is usually to test every component individually.

not him but it's harder and harder to find normal solder at local retailers where I live. I guess you can probably get it online fine.

Not a big deal though, really.

Yeah, that's what I thought.

I'm just stupidly anxious and keep wanting to find a solution right away.

I contacted the manufacturer and I'll see if I can get help (or possibly an exchange/warranty) first before I start to try the DIY route.

It's just so frustrating having this happen and having to wait.

Thanks for the help, man.
