Okay, _now_ the year is half-over though, and you pretty much wasted it, good job! Or didn't you? Fuck idk, I know I did.

Listen to your library, show off your backlog, babble about new music, tell us what you have been listening to today and what you will listen to in the following month, drop Jangle's Thrift Tourney, rate my dicks, just let the good times flow.

Btw, speaking of oneothe, he's been listening to a lot of Lerche lately. He even changed his listening to status on RYM to "the discography of Sondre Lerche". So yeah I guess he has you to thank for that. Damn Lerche fans.

>Aphex Twin - Richard D. James Album

A very solid album. For some reason I was expecting it to be a lot more aggressive, especially with the cover. The drumming is super well done and its actually one of the most melodic IDM albums I've heard. 4 is incredibly well done especially in terms of the aformentioned drumming and Goon Gumpas sounds like it was lifted directly from a child's dreamscape. I don't know why though but it just doesn't grab me as much as I'd think it would. Definitely going to revisit.

gonna be working through some more 2016 releases freeform style, listening to YG's Still Brazy now, actually pretty fucking good.

but first!

Massimo Volume - Lungo i bordi (1995)
>post-rock

I listened to this while walking at night, and I'd have to say it fits that atmosphere very well. It's got a lot of nice aspects, the jazz-like drumming is very impressive, I like the spoken word portions, and overall it's just put together very well, but a lot of this is just kinda pretty sounds, with a little bit of noise for the edge. So much buildup, but no payoff, this album could be /so/ much more. Luckily, the basic sound is very nice, but it's all just a tease for something bigger that never comes.

2.5+

Angel Olsen - Half Way Home (2012)
>singer/songwriter, indie folk

Quite a large amount of Will Oldham in the sound here, but Olsen's vocals just really don't fit this more basic indie folk style very well. Not to say that they're bad or anything, she's one of my favorite working vocalists, but the instrumentals just simply aren't good or interesting enough for Olsen's angelic, powerful vocals to truly shine. And it's just kinda basic indie folk, not really too interesting. Pleasant, and I'd listen to it again, but I'll stick with Strange Cacti.

YG - Still Brazy (2016)
>gangsta rap, west coast hip hop, g-funk

Everything about this is like a lost g-funk record from the '90s: the beats, the simplistically political lyrics, the flows, it's like a lost 2Pac album. And I do like it a fair bit. The major draw here are the beats, which are pretty wonderful, if a bit derivative and unoriginal. But they make such a nice, laid-back atmosphere, really harkens back to the classics. I'm not a huge fan of YG as a rapper, and all the features here don't really do anything interesting. But YG rides the beats well, and his ultra-simplistic lyrics are actually really quite charming and fun. Fun little rap album, nothing spectacular, but pretty alright.

alright, this freeform chart is almost done, anybody wanna rec some colors for the next one?

Morrissey - Viva Hate (1988)
>jangle pop

I've always had pretty much the complete opposite reaction to The Smiths that most people had, I'm a huge fan of Morrissey's vocals and lyrics, and I've always found the instrumentation to be really safe and vanilla. Johnny Marr obviously has a way with his instrument, and he has a great ear for melodies, but his typically jangly 80s sound never resonated me. On this album, Moz ditches The Smiths and recruits Vini Reilly from The Durutti Column, and my god was this a wonderful idea. Morrissey's overblown and operatic voice doesn't really mesh well with the simplistic sound of The Smiths, in my opinion, but it works /so/ well with the soundscapes Reilly creates with his guitar. There are some filler, jangle pop songs that are kinda hit or miss, but the good stuff here is fucking /great/.

What exactly is everyone's problem with Frankie Sinatra? Other than it being "electro-swing" (it's not) the largest flaw imo by is Danny Brown's verse, which is lazy even for him. Other than that, DOOM's verse is alright, and the song structure is better than most people give it credit for.

All the people saying, "16 years and we get a (insert criticism) here" are like 18. Pretty invalid when you've only been waiting for like two years (I've been waiting for maybe 4 and an artist isn't entitled to release music for you, so such a complaint is pretty moot).

This album, while MUCH more detailed and sample based than I expected, still obviously pales in comparison to SILY's level of structure and deep sample-work.

While there is flow and consistency, the constant unbroken energy and atmosphere that is present in SILY is for the most part lost, but not necessarily in a terrible way, it's just different.

The Gorillaz comparison is for people who hop on meme-y bandwagons, and makes little sense at all. Only comparison is that they are a band who has a lot of rap features? I don't understand. They're not even the same genre.

If anything, the album's largest detriment is that it relies FAR too heavily on fades and similar "drop" effects. These exist a lot in SILY, but are used sparingly and at most twice in a single track.

There is also just too much fucking TALKING in this album. Instead of fluent song-to-song transitions, in a lot of cases, tracks will just have a sample of a conversation, then moving onto the next track.

Other than Frankie Sinatra, Markie's verse, and a couple empty moments, I can think of very few moments I disliked here. If you enjoyed SILY, you shouldn't have any holdups about this.

In conclusion, don't expect SILY, but a whole new kind of atmosphere. I expect a pan of sorts from critics and fans expecting another SILY, but as it's own piece not compared to the original, it's very enjoyable.

>>
>>66068335
Should also note that the short spoken-word samples are almost never relevent to the material at hand, and aren't really endeering or entertaining (in contrast to the one's in, for example, Radio or Frontier Psychiatrist).

This album will not blow your mind, nor do I think you'll find more things to love about it on every listen, which is one of the reasons I'm glad I love SILY as much as I do. It's just a very enjoyable Summer Pop album, and honestly, I'm okay with that.

Neu! - Neu! '75
Initially this didn't really impress all that much, the first half is really poor in comparison to the first album
Once you get past the 2nd track they really start to grab your attention, Leb' Whol isgreat, really nice to here them go down-tempo for a change
the rest is pretty fantastic as well, opening up their sound to what was going on in their debut, jamming to the fucking beat of the city
it'd make for a 10/10 EP if you cut off the first 2 and maybe the last track

Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde
MUCH better
Dylan finally got a grip on the Blues, and the songwriting ascends to the likes of Blood on the Tracks better cuts
the main attraction here is probably the feels, Dylan bears his soul out for you repeatedly in quite lengthy and sprawling tracks (sprawling used in the loosest terms, this isn't post-rock)
he's also really good at piano, like really good

Captain Beefheart - Safe as Milk
I mean, yeah, it's more coherent than Trout Mask Replica, but it hasn't got the same fire that that album does
maybe comparing them is a poor way to criticize them, but whatever
it's pretty straightforward Blues rock, it's important, because it was instrumental in shaping rock to come, but it has been bested by albums both in the same year and in years to come

Supreme Dicks - Emotional Plague
Sonic Youth without any of the things that makes the band good
some of the textures here are legit interesting, but mostly the songs are without form, tune or talent

>Demilich - The Four Instructive Tales ...of Decomposition

An old school death metal demo straight out of hell.
The most characteristic and best thing about this record is definitely the guitar tone: the fact that everything is down-tuned to A makes every sound feel putrescent, heavy, dense. Combine this with Antii Boman’s vocals, that despite not being perfect yet still deliver some moments of pure filth, and you’ll get an horrifying, hellish sound.

The riffs are very old school sounding, but they are incredibly varied, with songs incorporating more rhythmic moments, some of them being almost grindcore, technical bits, angular melodies, and even death doom slowdowns. While the structure of the single pieces is thought out and well written enough to not make it sound aimless or incoherent, the riffs aren’t that strong most of the times; sure, they are never bad and they are pretty enjoyable, but not that many were actually really impressive or even memorable.
The drumming feels like it needs a little bit more of practice to fully unleash its potential, but it still showcases some pretty unique, creative and frankly amazing patterns and fills.

Overall, not a bad demo by any means, but also not very impressive.
