What is the best R&B album of all time?
I personally think Black Messiah is a gigantic artistic achievement, and I'm surprised it's not discussed a lot. I think releasing it on December 15, 2014 was unfortunate, because it missed the year end top lists; and most 2015 lists ignored it as well. What do you think?

But songs in the key of life happened

It did happen, and it's beautiful; but I think Black Messiah is more consistently good.
idk if you would count it as r&b, but w/e

Love both
Omarion - 21
If you seriously think Black Messiah is that groundbreaking you reveal yourself to know nothing much about the genre
P-Funk, Isley Brothers, Sly and the Family Stone, Prince, Sam Cooke, Earth Wind & Fire...all out out gamechangers
Black Messiah is great, but just a modern harkening to a lot of older stuff, revamped
Jodeci unplugged

Also black messiah was heavily inspired by sly and the fanily stone's "theres a riot goin on"
D's Voodoo wins my vote. It takes all the sounds of yesteryear and turns it into this incredible haze. BM is great but it's not as groundbreaking or consistent imo
>anything not by The-Dream in this thread

I've tried to get into that album for so long, but the slickness of the production always deters me. Much prefer stuff like There's A Riot Goin' On. I wish I could get into Stevie Wonder like that.

it's the album of the decade, it's absolutely phenomenal. 10/10 for sure
Although I wouldn't call it an RnB record, it has some RnB, but it's has just as much soul, rock, and jazz, very varied album. Voodoo and Brown Sugar are more RnB (Brown Sugar especially). Voodoo is also really great, Brown Sugar is really good too and gets ignored constantly. D'Angelo hasn't released a single bad song

Yeah it's black rock, a la Sly. Speaking of which, another GOAT coming through.
