For a while now, my attitude towards rating has orbited this general idea: a 4.5-star record is a perfect, unimpeachable, gorgeous work of art. By any rational standard, 4.5s are the Platonic ideal of music, the lifeblood and fuel of what makes this stuff matter to us so much. If the absolute greatest thing ever recorded were a 4.5, music would still be one of the great artforms.
5-star records aren't "the best of the best," or a more refined grade of 4.5– they are, on some primal and visceral level, utterly inconceivable. Superlatives like "great" and "perfect" don't just fail to describe them. A 5 is a record so far removed from the general run of music that it almost isn't music at all. 5s are so uncompromisingly individual as to burn away all context and swallow your critical thinking whole. They almost shouldn't have happened. It somehow feels wrong that we can just put them on our phones next to real music and play them whenever we want, in the way that it'd feel wrong if God reached down and gave us twenty million dollars and an ice cream cone. A break from nature that feels both too good to be true and like a confirmation of the inscrutable harmony of the universe.
I think that's what German philosophers are talking about when they discuss "the sublime."
Obviously, I don't hold my 5s to quite that standard, and I'm less exacting and stingy about them now than I've been in a while, and obviously I was exaggerating a bit for effect in the above paragraph, but the principle's there: 4.5s are the culmination of music as it's normally made, and 5s happen through some lateral thinking on the part of the artist, arrive at their effect by some abnormality of composition and performance, kinda like how Hamlet is technically a play among many plays in the sense that it's a composition in dialogue designed to be performed aloud in front of an audience, but the sentence "Hamlet is a 17th-Century English play" seems so inadequate as to almost miss the point.
