My laptop broke the other day so I have no access to photo editing software, but of course I can do better. You're literally just slabbing a single shade onto a grayscale image in a colour layer. You have zero understanding of how colour works at all, which is shown the most by the fact that you have no idea how hue and value interact when converted to grayscale (and back).

You yourself said it - quality of posts is important. But yeah, I could do it faster than you, easily. Because I know what I'm doing and have a basic understanding of colour theory.

Pro tip: telling you you're shit at something you are shit at is not being mean. However, not listening to protips from someone who is actually not shit is just being retarded as fuck.
>>
How do you do it? Just adding a colour layer? Im curious as i do this for a living and want to see what methods other people use
>>
do you people shit on a downs syndrome kid when you see him coloring? no

>>
>>66001998
Yeah, colour layer is the correct way to do it, when you understand how colour works and what things actually look like.
>>
>>66001992
not OP, but you do realize that nobody has any reason to believe you're actually "not shit" as long as you don't post ANYTHING to support that claim? Y'know, that's kinda how 4chan works

>>
>>66002028
Anyone who would know even the most basic concept of this would see and understand that the critique I propose is legitimate. For anyone else, why the fuck should I even care? You all drool over pretty colours and glitter regardless of quality.
>>
>>66002018
There is no "colour layer" on Photoshop, all blending modes produce different results with the same colors you apply.

You don't know shit either.

No layering was used. pic related is a program called Krita, i used the two brushes i marked with red for coloring, they are basically coloring brushes that instantly color greyscale images in whatever color i choose. those two brushes come in a brush pack called "V8" by David Revoy.

In addition to that, i also used some film emulation filters from a Krita plugin called G'mic.

>>66002143

No, and it's not aiming to either.

>>66002186
You know I didn't quote a single one of your "works", so saying I cherry picked anything is just about the dumbest thing you could do.

And yeah, the one you now quoted as "good" still suffers the exact same issues that comes from you not understanding colour: you're doing flat colours and don't understand how saturation and hue are differs in different conditions, even on something that is a flat colour (which they generally are not).

Even the original painting of Mao in the background there, which is in rather flat colours, has the proper saturation and hue changes over shaded areas that come as a product of subsurface scattering and shit.

Literally nothing in this thread is well made. It's all rushed worked by an amateur who should be filling in colouring books with crayons (incidentally, what Krita means) instead.
>>
>>66000377
seconding this request
>>
>>66002255
I did not aim to replicate the original picture of Mao, i aimed to color it in whatever way i want using my creative freedom, but in a way that looks like it could have been the real picture that was transferred the grey-scale. and i absolutely succeeded.

Now, about Krita -
It legitimately can do most of what photoshop does. there are professionals who use krita. it's true that the developers of it aimed it to be an "painting and illustration" program but the fact is it's capable of more.

Krita is legitimately a free alternative to photoshop, even if the devs of krita don't define it in that way.
>>
>>66002255

>>
>>66002317
>It legitimately can do most of what photoshop does

>>
>>65997702

>>

>>
>>66000543
THIS please
>>
>>66002354
The feature list displayed in the krita website is pretty outdated.

Read this, this page compared between Krita 2.9 to photoshop. please note that right now the version of krita is 3.0 though and it has alot of new features and improved performance, so that comparison is a bit outdated too... but it should be enough to show you how close krita is to photoshop

https://docs.krita.org/Introduction_to_Krita_coming_from_Photoshop
>>
>>66002387
That is literally the list I am reading from, which confirms that it doesn't hold a candle against Photoshop.
>>
>>66002412
But it can literally do most of what photoshop does. there are even some professionals using krita fyi.

AND BTW, let me tell you something about art. art is subjective. if i think i did an a really good job, then i did a really good job. there is nothing that makes my artistic interpretation of those grey-scale paintings "objectively bad".

And besides if you were following this thread alot of other people liked what i made, but that's another thing.
>>
>>66001960
i love that gif.
>>
>>66002255
man you are absolutely insufferable, OP just found something he likes and that he's new at and he's trying to have fun colorizing albums, that's all. I thought the trip was enough to show how big of an ego you have, but you're proving me wrong boy
>>
No offence dude but these are all pretty awful. Anyone can learn to do this in less than five minutes with a pirated copy of photoshop. The brushes are imprecise, the tones are all completely wrong and there's no kind of texture.

I'm not trying to shit on your work but at least practice before believing what you've made is worth something.
>>
>>66002453

>>
>>66002453
>But it can literally do most of what photoshop does. there are even some professionals using krita fyi.
Two words: non-destructive editing. Literally no professional who does anything related to graphics for a living will be using a shit tier free program that is aimed at neckbeards drawing naked ladies. They can afford Photoshop, they will have been taught using Photoshop, and they will continue using Photoshop not only because it's industry standard, but because it's by far the best.

>AND BTW, let me tell you something about art. art is subjective. if i think i did an a really good job, then i did a really good job. there is nothing that makes my artistic interpretation of those grey-scale paintings "objectively bad".

It isn't an opinion thing, this IS something everyone can do exceedingly easily. Colourising is an art, I used to work with someone who did it professionally. What you've done is the result of five minutes' worth of dicking around in Photoshop.

Again, I'm not trying to be an asshole, but these show you haven't done any kind of real practice or made any attempt to understand how colours, shades and textures work. It's the equivalent of someone picking up a guitar for the first time, strumming randomly and calling it 'great in my opinion'.

are the cancer which is destroying modern artistic culture.

He's fostering the belief that 'art is subjective' and 'trying is all that counts'. The idea that 'anybody can create art' regardless of talent, dedication and every other objective marker of quality which has set good art apart from the bad since the dawn of time has wormed its way into society and spawned a generation of people who feel entitled to be told that they're great at something they absolutely are not, without putting any effort in whatsoever.

Every little talentless artschool kiddo grows up thinking they're the next Shakespeare which is precisely the reason we will never again see an artist rise to Shakespeare's level.

But Krita has MORE than all of the essential features you need to make art professionally. As i said earlier, in terms of features, it has most of what Photoshop has, as well as a few things photoshop doesn't have.

There, maybe this will help you understand krita is a viable alternative to photoshop for professional illustrators:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raKHHFv4nN8
>>
>>66002954
I've already told you the features lacking from Krita that are detrimental to professional use. Sure, some hack probably uses it for painting or illustration, but no one who does it at a professional level will be using Krita. And especially not for anything else that Photoshop is used for, such as Photo editing.
>>
