Should I wait for a DX7 mk2 to show up on eBay for less than £400 or should I buy this mk1 I have my eye on for £250 now?

I know the mk1 has no stereo output, but that’s not really a problem in Ableton, I’ve got enough stereo imaging equipment to fix that once it’s recorded in.
Dunno what else the mk2 has a leg up on over the mk1 though.

>don't know how to clean up those small samples so only the back vocals are heard
>don't know how to make it fuller in "drop", tried automating fruity stereo shaper, but I got a shitty result like pic related
>absolutely no idea how to organize all of this. Should I have multiple vocal samples, all on their separate channels and just have one "quiet" one and the other "loud" for my chorus?

Maybe I'm still trying to tackle something too big for me, I never did a remix like this before and have no idea how to cut and place vocal samples on my timeline without zooming in and adjusting by a mm.

Also, I was going through a lot of tutorials on compression, EQ and all that, but I'm still bad at it - ok, it takes practice, but I have a problem with compression, that is, I barely ever hear any difference in those things. Don't know what to do.

You seem to be lacking a lot of highs. Both in your vocals and overall track.

>don't know how to make it fuller in "drop"
Stereo will only fill out the stereofield in said frequencies. Layering elements to fill out the gaps in the frequency spectrum will generally give a fuller sound and will make it hit harder.

That said I really like what you have going here.

Here's a tip anon

Theory literally does not matter for most forms of electronic music

That being said it certainly helps to give you a guideline on what is (and isn't) tonal in the classical sense. If you want to make future bass for example, theory would help you a fuckton when you are constructing the main chords, but it doesn't matter if there are parallel fifths or octaves as long as it sounds good.

Tldr theory helps but no one cares

Is there any way to use Logic on Windows?

Not at all, unless you'd like to make a hackntosh and get a dual boot with OSX (which runs pretty shit in my exp).

Logic is pretty nice but cubase is pretty similar and you're able to use all the free VSTs that exist since Logic only uses AU plugins
>>
>>65989983
I understand, but like I said, I wanted to try out Logic's own plugins and synths.

I was talking to a producer about an old EP he produced which inspired me massively and he admitted that most the synths and effects he used were Logic presets and I'd love to just play around with them and hear them on their own, but I guess that isn't going to happen unless I have a Mac.

Michael Jackson would frequently use the 57's cousin, the SM7(now the SM7B). Had a bit better low end response, and a few other improvements.

So long as you have a solid preamp behind the 58 or 57 you are good to go. I would say it excels on percussive sounds and drums over vocals though.

Hey ya'll, I'm someone transitioning from classical music to making music of my own and I've been wanting to ask:

How does you produce the darker, heavier beats like the stuff Arca, Burial and James Blake do? Everytime I use an 808 sample in ableton, it only stays on one pitch, but I usually hear 808s moving across the board in their music.

Is there some kind of Plug-in I can use where I can put a midi note wherever there is a spike in amplitude against an audio track?

I have an audio track that is not set to a tempo and can't really be set to one (tempo changes a lot throughout the song). But I want to have an extra low end boost for every time the kick plays.

Is there a plugin that will do this for me or will I have to manually plug in a midi note at every specific place myself?

late but

sorry didn't mean to discourage you, i just mean you're going to be completely overwhelmed with max. one of the main draws to it is that it can help you do things that you wouldn't normally be able to do with a "regular" daw and vsts...

if you know nothing it makes more sense for you to learn everything ableton can do and get good programming synths in order to learn what your limitations are and if you really need max.

the "Real deal" would just be vsts or hardware if you choose that route... better sound quality, midi implementation, and they're just easier to integrate.

(I'm on Ableton but Logic might have the same/equivalent stock FX. Oh and this is off the top of my head btw)

Put a gate on your sub track, sidechain it to the song you're trying to boost, play with the floor/attack til it does what you want.

I'm sure there's a VST out there that could do the same thing, but what you described seems to be fairly easy. Do you want to play the same MIDI note every time the kick goes in, or is it going to change throughout?

I have an older Multimix, 12 channel, Firewire model (guy who sold it to me didn't have the right Firewire chip on his computer so he thought it could only record in a single stereo pair, not on multichannel lel)

It isn't noisy, I don't use the built in mic pre-amps so can't comment on those, I don't use the onboard FX...lol why am I even commenting? Anyway, it sure can do digital multitrack recording, it does get a bit warm but I opened up and the fucking thing is built like a tank inside.

If you find an older Firewire model, get it. IIRC the newer USB ones don't do multitrack recording and the firewire model are discontinued. My set up is 80% gear but I love the fact that I can also skip ITB mix through the firewire port. So its good for both performing AND recording

The 8-channel and 16-channel Multimix mixers are available as USB 2.0 versions and each channel (plus the stereo mix) can be routed to the DAW separately with those.

For Firewire it's recommended to have a Ti chipset in your Firewire interface for the computer to play nice with the DICE multiplexer chip in the mixer.

The mixer (as you say) is pretty quiet, the mic preamps are reasonably quiet too for the first 75% of the gain pot travel though they do have a little more hiss in the top quarter, I don't use the effects in my 16 USB 2.0 either but I'd imagine they'd be useful for giving a singer some reverb while using direct monitoring during vocal recording.

Yeah mine gets toasty too - caps on the power supply failed after 2 years of use but it was an easy enough job replacing them.

hi everyone all DAWs are the same and if you spend time discussing them then its evident you don't have the dedication and focus it takes to make music. you should not give a rat's ass about other people's methods especially if they're strangers on an imageboard.

that bit of advice out of the way, i recently donated (bought) to this website and downloaded all the 5 GB of drum machine samples:
http://samples.kb6.de/downloads.php
The guy who made that page is a faggot though, he says that you can get the samples by donating, and that the donation is for server costs. OBVIOUS bullshit famalam, he's just trying to sell them, i think someone on a forum said that his hosting service provided unlimited data or some shit like that. i've also read on forums that he's a cunt to people that e-mail him. oh and the sample's aren't even his, he just collects them and repackages them and doesn't give credit to whoever actually made the samples. so he's a total fag but it's a good sample library,

so i'm wondering if any of you dudes have any ideas on how i should share it with the rest of the internet for free. would mega take a 5 GB zip? or should i make a torrent for it? (kinda hesitant about torrents bc i'm afraid of it losing seeders and being gone forever) the guy claims on his site that the samples are public domain, (which is why he charges for them with a paypal "donation") so i doubt i would get in trouble. (tho i could definately see the guy getting butthurt if he found it) any ideas? thx

oh you know what? in the mean time, if anyone wants me to upload an individual paid sample pack from that website, just tell me which and i'll do it

access to facilities and resources is one of the biggest draws though. getting into an art/music school is the 2016 equivalent to showing promise and being accepted as an artist's assistant or apprentice in times of yore. you get the stewardship, pastoral direction, experience and immersion into the field. yes, you have to pay for a degree but then you have proof of your committment and competency and that can open doors for you.

also, at a college you meet all kinds of sluts and fuccbois, have mad sex with the sluts and fuccbois, and make important connections and networks, with teachers, peers, and industry players.

it's only partially about learning the state of the art, it's mostly about going through the trial and experience and having an environment that you can absorb as much information, inspiration, and value from as possible

I don't feel like bootleg remixing songs or remixing older songs since there is absolutely no pressure behind it.

This site has some really good songs that I'd like to remix but you need to have an active facebook to be able to submit your entry which I don't have and don't find worth making one.

>I dont even know how a studio works what about mics and stuff?

A lot of people learn that stuff from going into the studio and making demos with their band, or from playing shows with their band, and it's valuable knowledge to gain - all you'd need is a long enough time spent asking questions, paying attention and you'd learn loads.

On your own though it's tough, for proper hands-on experience if you don't know someone with the gear who will let you mess with it for all the time you'd need you're really going to be looking at spending money - either on studio time to record your stuff during which you'll learn (some of) the ways, or school to make connections and learn (some of) the ways, or buy the gear yourself and teach yourself (what you hope are) the ways.

What you need to think about is "Who am I competing with for this job/internship?" The answer is that in nearly all cases you'll be going up against at least one person who has spent their early adulthood reading the music technology mags and blogs, messing about with electronics (both repairs and builds) and - in all likelihood - saving up for pieces of kit that allow them to complete their practical knowledge.

That person is your target - you need to work out how to come across as a a more attractive proposition than them.

>>do you know how to use pro tools

>>do you know how to use a console

See those big ass "studio consoles"? they are literally oversized mixers you'd find for $150 on special on amazon. The same fucking thing. There is literally nothing you can learn on uni that you cannot learn on your own as far as using equipment goes. Also (and I've been told this by more than 1 studio owner) those consoles, in this day and age, are mostly for show. Kinda like people who go into marketing/graphic design agencies and expect to see sleek Apple computers in the front desks, even tho the might be done on PCs in the back. Go on your local classifieds and see how fucking cheap they're going to these days because studios don't really need them

>where do I learn then??

The internet jesus f christ. For every imaginable question you have about audio, there is an old retired audio engie at gearslutz explaining to you in detail the answer. For every fucking DAW question you have out there, there is a mumbling German guy doing video tutorials in youtube

I'm actually raging at the fact that some people have the biggest and most comprehensive database of knowledge out there right in between their furry and 4chan tabs and yet here we are, still willing to shill $$ to some jew university to learn things that were relevant 10 years ago

They are good, well, "good" in the sense that your external gear will work most of the time. However, they do suffer from inherent problems (timing and jitter issues), specially if you're trying to run old gear. That specific thing in your pic, I remember having to download some custom drivers made by an old engineer because even though I was able to run a midi keyboard with it, I was having a lot of trouble syncing an older synth with my DAW.
