I've been playing guitar for 3 years and have done so without learning to read music, nor do I have any musical training, so I don't know what specific things are (jazz chords, blues riffs, etc ec) when I hear them. I come to you, /ggnore/, because I have a question.

Is there a name for the style that Kurt Cobain played? Instead of moving his chords up two notes, he'd move them up three notes and make weird, almost atonal chord structures. Is there a word for this?

I think Peter Buck probably used a 12 string Ric on that and then a chorus effect for some of it, sounds pretty clean and dry otherwise. Could be a 6 string Ric, but definitely has that 360 kinda clean to it and I think he was using those almost exclusively at the time

Any ambient players in this thread ever tried any Frippertronics stuff? The basic idea is that you have a very long delay (you'll probably need digital delays unless you have a bunch of tape machines just lying around so that you can get 7+ seconds of delay time) with a ton of repeats and you swell in single notes until they start melding together and creating soundscapes. Very cool stuff.
Heres some videos for reference

Yep, you're the guy! Don't know if that was the exact clip, I remember it being at least a year if not more ago that I heard it first. Good stuff though. How do you do the tone in the clip without the bow? Sounds great.
>>
>>65970845
Also, I think the tone in The Angelic Process is bassier and has less of that top end crunch. I think if you made that change in the EQ it would be pretty damn close.

Not strictly from Fripp but I use layered delays that feed into each other to create soundscapes.

Thanks. I think this is another old clip I might've posted, but they've come a long way since then really.
https://clyp.it/xvwa33rt

>How do you do the tone in the clip without the bow? Sounds great.
I've been messing around with reverb (I typically don't use any). That tone is pretty simple really. It's just two different reverbs, one hard left, one hard right, and a dry signal running up the middle. Low pass is set pretty extreme at about 4kHz then some stereo widening to make it feel bigger.

I messed around the same premise here but using diffusion as well to make everything sort of blur together.

>>65971159
>Also, I think the tone in The Angelic Process is bassier and has less of that top end crunch. I think if you made that change in the EQ it would be pretty damn close.
Noted. I might try running a lowpass filter before the amplifier as well as after then and maybe throw a 120hz boost in front.

Oh yeah I remember you saying you were working on some ambient stuff around that time as well. That ever turn into something you released? Would like to hear it if so.
I think that clip is the one you posted, definitely has come a long way since then.
The stereo widening certainly helped. I just relistened to the first couple songs on Weighing Souls With Sand and I do think it is way bwoom-ier than how you have it set right now. Almost Model T like. I think the low pass with the boost would do wonders.
>>65971361
It was already cropped, and I've been browsing /gg/ for about three years, on 4chan for about 6. I don't regularly have this problem with pictures, although it has happened a couple times before.
>>65971409
Love the swollen pickle. Hell yeah you can get stoner doom tones with it. The tone filter on this thing can bring you all the way to drone doom tones if you want them. It's also ridiculously loud, I rarely get the volume to halfway.

>Oh yeah I remember you saying you were working on some ambient stuff around that time as well. That ever turn into something you released? Would like to hear it if so.
I have a few hours of material but nothing I've officially released. I've been pretty busy with other things.

I should have a release coming out soon though. It looks like I may be playing a gig as my ambient project in a couple months, so I want something out by then.

>I think that clip is the one you posted, definitely has come a long way since then.
That last clip (comes up on Clyp.it as "13") is very headphone friendly. I plan to replicate the sound live by using two 5150s. Should sound cool.

>I just relistened to the first couple songs on Weighing Souls With Sand and I do think it is way bwoom-ier than how you have it set right now. Almost Model T like. I think the low pass with the boost would do wonders.
Worth remembering those clips are direct. I'm using an SLO100 sim and stereo IRs. I might patch it out to my 5150 or DSL later today and see how much bigger it sounds.

I also tune to A, he tuned to Drop C. Would probably sound a bit chunkier if I could play those main palm mutes as open strings.

A standard or drop A? That's crazy low, whenever I would drop my C standard guitar (now tuned in all fifths) to drop A I couldn't really imagine it being useful for anything other than drone because of the scale length/tension of a Les Paul. Why an SLO100? Didn't he use a 5150
>>65971616
Wouldn't be surprised, its a great fuzz for bass too. Retains all the low end.
>>
>>65971691
>A standard or drop A?
A Standard. I was tuning to B Standard for about six years and started messing around in A and really loved how you can get the low string to sound. I did a couple videos in Drop A last year and ventured into A Standard not long after that.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWPS1SSNYRk

>I couldn't really imagine it being useful for anything other than drone because of the scale length/tension of a Les Paul.
I just use fairly thick strings haha. The clip here >>65969396 was recorded with my seven string which is using 9-46+62 at the moment and a BKP Painkiller which adds a ton of definition. The other clips are mainly my Les Paul which is 13-62, but I mainly tune that to B still. I'd probably use something like 13-68 or 13-70 if I was to tune that to A.

I was going to bump my seven to 10-46+66 but I've got a 27" conversion neck being made so I'm not worrying about changing gauges until then.

>Why an SLO100? Didn't he use a 5150
He used a 5150 II. I just find the AxeFX's SLO100 sim sounds closer to a 5150 than the 5150 sim. There's not much else to it than that honestly. I did this with an SLO100 sim for instance.

Yeah they're awesome pedals. I have a handful of them. My death metal tones are usually two SLO100s in parallel with an HM-2+TS9 on one and a TS-9 on the other. That's what you're hearing in that clip.

>Nice Bolt Thrower shirt, I've been learning a lot of songs from The IVth Crusade lately.
Yeah it's a legitimate one too. I've got a few different designs.

Which songs are you working on? For Victory... has always been my favourite but I keep meaning to cover Realms of Chaos.

The first couple Bolt Thrower albums were in A Standard.

The IVth Crusade, Where Next To Conquer, and As The World Burns. For Victory... is great, I should learn that one as well. Been trying to get back into playing black and death metal to get my speed up, so there's also a lot of Dissection and Death songs I've been trying to learn. Fun stuff indeed.

There's not a huge amount of difference. I've found the MITs have a bit more top end fizz that hurts definition though. I'd stick to MIJs.

Both great ways to speed up. I bought an 8100 just to get closer to the later Death tone and The Jester Race.

It might be worth learning some grind too if you really want to focus on speed and accuracy.

I think to start a band it's important to have members who spend most of their free time playing music, even if they suck, just so that they're bored enough with noodling shitty riffs that they actually want to get something done. Trouble is it's a lot harder to network with people who have no life, naturally. I would love to start a weeb band if we could avoid weeb music. Anyways I'm trying to slowly convert my extrovert party animal roommates into shut-in musicians. It ain't working to nobody's surprise.

Distortion or a tube screamer if you already have a high gain amp
Noise gate
Maybe a wah but don't go all Kirk hammet on it
Possibly a reverb but Ive been using amp reverb since I started playing and haven't had a problem.
If you specify what kind of metal you'd like to play specifically, I can give you more guidance

Only people who play metal are concerned about how amps look. They'll play in camo shorts and a comic book t-shirt but worry about how the amps look.

For a backyard show maybe. In literally any real gig situation a smaller amp is almost always going to sound better.

Cheap guitars with p90s seem to be pretty reliable and a tone you can sculpt alright. Obviously some of the classic tones for shoegaze and such are single voil bright guitars, but a big part of that sound is actually a bright spring reverb, set however long you want.

Cheap single coils that sound good stock are harder to come by.

Is the pickup what mostly determines the sound? Cause a couple quick searches bring up like 100$ guitars w/ p90 pickups, which is fine by me if they're actually decent and don't just slap one on to draw in people like me (I specifically saw the Epiphone Les Paul)

In case it helps, I'm considering <300$ reasonable. I'm willing to shell out a little bit of cash but I do need to be able to pay rent

>>
>>65981379
Learning music doesn't prevent you from doing those things, in fact it makes it a lot faster. You can develop your own style a lot quicker if you actually know what's generic. I do find new players thinking they just struck gold with some new and fabulous thing that actually is a very basic musical structure or progression.

Knowing theory just makes everything faster, so when you imagine something creative you actually know how to achieve it. I have never met someone who regretted learning theory or felt it stifled their creativity. I have only met people who haven't haven't learned it yet who think it will. It's not hard to "not use" the theory you learn at all. There's no point of no return, you can always play without theory if you feel like it unless you're some sort of savant.
>>
>>65981504
>painted on f-holes
That shit looks just as bad, he's just a pre-internet memer.
>>
>>65981435
Yeah, the pickups are the main aspect of sound, assuming you can get it to play buzz-free. And really, when it comes to cheaper guitars that should be a priority, even with effect-driven music you won't spend all your time playing open chords. No matter what guitar you consider, check reviews ON FORUMS. Don't even bother with amazon reviews or articles in magazines, etc. Also, try to give more credit to reviews by people who have owned the guitar for a decent amount of time, stuff were the guy just got his guitar will always have some bias or another.
>>

Just throwing a noob tip out there: I've recently found 3 piece bands are really good for "deep listening" or whatever you want to call it. Obviously for the cleaner mix but also because each instrument will cover more ground and have more variety. I'm using it mostly to listen for what I like and don't like in terms of space and melody vs. backing/support.
>>
>>65981359
Everyone is always so worried about getting a signature guitar... It honestly wouldn't even be that far of a stretch to call a Les Paul standard a signature guitar. It's even directly named after the dude
Anyways, if it's a good fit for you, then you should have no reason whatsoever to worry about buying one.
>>
is bending generally easier on strat than on tele
>>
>>65982175
No. You may have more slack, meaning the strings will bend slightly easier but you need them to bemd further. It will take the same amount of strength. This is not always the case but it can be if the tele is top-loaded.

Honestly you won't notice it most of the time.
>>
>>65981359
they said Eric Clapton strat is espcially good for playing blues is that true?
>>
Sooooo, tonewoods is all bro-science, right? It doesn't actually affect anything?
>>
>>65982245
It affects maybe 1% of your sound. Which you can then correct.
>>
>>65982245
There's been some pretty good studies on it and the science is very complicated. The actual issue at hand is more the human ear than the physics of the string. It is extremely difficult to differentiate guitar bodies, particularly if they are similar in weight.

Basically any marketing associated with it is bro science, meanwhile the real research is basically ignored. In a way, it should be, because the question is and always will be "can you tell?"

Out of curiosity I spend a lot of my time reading about this stuff, but I would say the most you can actually discern, and you really should be cautious about actually using this, is the effect of weight on sustain. As far as overall frequency response, brightness/darkness, and other marketing applied to wood, run the fuck away. You definitely can't correlate any species, and technically not any weights, although I could get into the science about that a bit more, to those characteristics.

I'm no scientist so I'll refrain from getting into detail beyond my depth of knowledge. Just know that thanks to metal bridges, a huge amount of the factors that are relevant when discussing acoustics are irrelevant, and obviously pickups further limit the ways the vibration of the body can change the sound.
>>

Learn everything theory related = can't write a good song
Be ignorant with a few chords and dicking around = can write a decent song that doesn't offend your own subjective tastes

I like being ignorant, thanks,
>>
>>65982858
It's just fucking super glue. Anyways you can get calluses really fast if you play until your fingers hurt pretty bad and them apply some deodorant to prevent blisters. You can't keep playing if you don't want blisters but you can get decent calluses in something like a week this way. "Playing through the pain" only works to the extent that you can avoid blisters which totally sabotage calluses.

I've used this method a couple times after long stints on electric guitar to get my fingers back into acoustic/bass shape.
>>
>>65982984
>Learn everything theory related = can't write a good song
if you don't know theory, how do you know that you can't write a good song with it?
>>
>>65982984
You think learning theory will make you dislike simple songs, which is just plain false. Knowing a new chord isn't going to stop you from writing 2 chord songs...

I'll reiterate that nobody has ever regretted learning theory. You'd think someone would actually have the regret if they found themselves unable to write good songs or enjoy their old songs.
>>
>>65982597
Post the sheet, it shouldn't be too hard aside from the fact you need to transpose clef

>>65982984
if you like being ignorant, please keep that to yourself.

Okay, so I currently own a nice 5 string bass (my main, HH pickups), a nice 4 string bass (HH as well), a de-fretted Squier Jazzbass (wanted to try fretless) and a piece of shit Yamaha (will be sold at some point).
On my list are an EUB, a nice fretless and a "beater bass", something that I can bring to rough gigs or leave at a location without worrying too much.
I'd want the beater bass to play as similar to my main bass as possible, so 35'' scale, relatively slim neck and 18mm-19mm string spacing. Any recommendations <1000€? I'm open to all kinds of suggestions in regards to pickups, P + musicman pickup in the bridge seems cool, or J + MM or maybe just a jazzbass, open to suggestions. What should I look for? Anything that immediately comes to mind?

I can change the string spacing on the bridge from 18 to 19.5mm, and it's currently in the middle. So anything from 18mm-19mm should be fine if it's not adjustable. I don't like small string spacing, makes slapping a pain in the ass and I've gotten used to my "big" 5string with the longer scale, wider neck and wider string spacing. Feels very natural now.

Who are some guitarists with signature models form various brands that you don't think deserve to have their own signature models? Either they're not that good, not popular or something else

My vote goes to this retard from Dragonforce. Not only is Dragonforce complete dogshit, but they're not even popular anymore, and this guy isn't even the main guitarist or face of the band. I don't even think fans of the band would even know who he is. Yet Ibanez makes and sells a signature guitar for him

Anyway, your thoughts?

Just get the level down and you'll be alright. Just because you're using distortion doesn't mean you have to overdrive the amp.

Why would you have 3 guitars with only humbuckers and no single coils or p90s?

I think you made poor choices
>>

Is it normal that you start doubting a purchase after a while? I mean, I bought a really expensive guitar, everyone who has tried it out said that it looks and plays absolutely amazing. But the ebony on the fingerboard isn't pure black, it's more of the striped variety (which is normal nowadays, I know, but still), the frets look like they have a weird shape (although it plays just fine) and I'm just not sure if a cheaper guitar wouldn't have been just as good.
>>
>>65985378
Well, it's normal when you buy a more expensive guitar. I mean, what's the real question here, you worried about your mental health or your guitar? Whether you doubt it or not really isn't as good of an indication as the actual price and model is.
>>
>>65985378
Yes, I ordered an Am. St. Strat and now I feel like I want a Jag. Even though I tried a Jag and hated it. Play on
>>
>>65985378
You should buy an even more expensive guitar and one slightly less expensive one and make direct comparisons. For science.
>>
>>65985313

i think the jazz is the coil tapping model ?

I want a jazz master but I hear they all get kinda buzzy and the trem system is bad and that the masterbridge system is the way to go ???

So let me get this straight

I buy one of these, and then:
>I plug my guitar into amp head
>I plug the amp head into the loadbox
>I plug the loadbox into my PC
>My PC gets the audio signal of what my amp head sounds like

It's that simple? So an Orange amp will sound like an orange amp, except the audio is directly into my PC?

That's the idea, minus the shitty orange cab of course.

Nope. Just drink the digital snake oil and call it a a day though, you'll thank yourself later.

One pedal was a gift and the second was bought just because I was trying to really get a black metal tone out of my 15w spider iv, honestly using both of those plus a fullbore metal have shown me I need to invest in a new amp and probably a new guitar as well as much as I love my leslie

Musicman Silhouette Special. 2k is a lot of money for me. I'm more worried about the guitar than about my mental health.

I don't need it to be a perfect replica, but will it be approximate? Or will it not even sound like my amp usually does at all?

Orange is just fun to make fun of anon, don't take it too seriously.
>>
>>65985313
That's a valid point, here's an explanation:
The SG was my first guitar and I got the jazzmaster to be a backup later on, but then realised that even though it had the humbuckers it sounded nothing like the SG thus not being so good as a backup/2nd guitar at shows.
I bought the RD two weeks ago mainly because I wanted a Gibson to be a backup for my Gibson and then this gem popped up on sale. It's really rare and I had been dreaming of an RD for a long time, so I just had to get it.
Next time I buy a guitar it definitely won't be an HH solidbody electric tho.

The jazzmaster coil taps and sounds awesome with just the single coil. Really close to a strat imo.
Also I have many guitars with various pickup types at my use, since my brother and father both play guitar. So if I ever need to have single coils or p90's etc. I don't have to look that far.

>>65985507
Yeah it coil taps
>I want a jazz master but I hear they all get kinda buzzy and the trem system is bad and that the masterbridge system is the way to go ???
From my experience if you play .11's or .12's theres no issues with buzzing etc. Also if the bridge buzzes it's not that big of a deal, since you can only hear it when you play acoustic.
There's nothing wrong with the trem system imo, many JM/Jaguar/mustang players just swap the stock fender bridge that is similar in these models for the mastery bridge. I was thinking of it too but the stock bridge has served me well.

That's nothing. Sorry. Musicman Silhouette Specials aren't anything special though. Your intuition is right though, it was a waste of money. You could've gotten the same guitar for half the price.

Only if you don't already know exactly how your amp sounds.
>>

You can get something close for less if you put in work, but off the rack I really can't think of a better guitar for the money. It might not stand up to pick related but in my eyes silhouettes are very special guitars.
>>
>>65985704
Yeah, I'm fine with that. It just needs to be good enough for streaming purposes.

For actual serious recording I just mic my cabinet
>>
i'm looking for a good, cheap electro-acoustic guitar that is suitable for fingerpicking. preferably with a body that is slightly smaller than a dreadnought.
any recs?
>>

If you enjoy it and it feels like the right guitar for you, then it's worth the money.
Stop overthinking your purchase and go play the damn thing.

It's just that the small imperfections seem really annoying when I paid that much money for it. I know that ebony is getting rarer and rarer, and that the only pitch black ebony out there is basically in the hands of luthiers who have stockpiles from 100 years ago (the stuff that is still used in classical instruments), I don't know. Was I expecting too much when I thought I'd get a "perfect" instrument for that kind of money?
>>
>>65985841
I dunno, I'd sorta consider it perfect including the ebony, but if anything else was wrong with it I'd be pretty annoyed.
>>
>>65985841

You have no idea what the fuck you're talking about. Here educate yourself stupid:

You bought a cheaply made factory built guitar for $2000, you have no one to blame but yourself.

Just wait desu, I have a musical stream idea that will be the #1 stream on Twitch Creative (currently a ghost town)
>>
>>65985875
Well, striped/not perfectly black ebony is considered to be of lesser quality. I'm just not sure if they "cheaped out" on that one or if it's simply not available anymore. Besides that there aren't really any flaws with it, no.

How many of you here are players that have been taking lessons since you've started or was taught to play?
It always seems to me that these types of players are very consistent and accurate but lack any emotion when playing live or any feeling in the music. I've noticed a lot of these players when playing live just stand and stare at the fretboard
