deftones is the only band that i know of that successfully captured that 1997-2001 feeling of total hedonism and apathy at the same time where you could just get away with everything.

it wasn't a tryhard school shooter edgelord deal, it was way more restrained, like you and the small clique of friends smoking after class and mostly worrying about who you were going to fuck at parties and who was going to get the fake ID to buy a keg from the corner store

i wonder if my description makes any sense

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kzv8g0qNqc0

ITT: We discover the Buttrock formula:

>generic fingerpicking riff probably in a flat, minor tuning
>singer emulating Eddie Vedder with lyrics about basic first world dissatisfactions
>small drum roll
>verse (with the same fingerpicking riff) building towards a loud chorus
>(classic pixies' quiet-loud-quiet , now-distorted, formula)
>small semi-second of guitar dissonance right before the chorus
>chorus: same chord progression from the intro, now in power chords; distorted enough to sound edgy, however, not too distorted enough to actually challenge anything
>quiet again
>chorus again
>bridge: the peak of the lead singer's dissatisfaction
>quiet
>chorus x2
>the end: the root key of the song fading into oblivion

Maybe, but the Fray just always kinda lacked that whole overly macho, douchey buttrock attitude; they were a lot softer and way more subdued. Kinda the same reason why you can't really classify Foo Fighters as buttrock.

post-2003 buttrock stopped including overly macho to include gay shit too, that's why we consider hoobastank's "the reason" to be buttrock when it's completely gay compared to something by godsmack for instance. it's all about "i get laid a lot so i get to act like a faggot" which came to about in the late 90's but only got really famous in the early 2000's
>>
>>65968965
the fray are like soft butt rock, like butt contemporary
>>
>>65968944
We should autistically come up with a new formula like this and try to make it big somehow.
>>
>>65969031
I disagree, the typical buttrock attitude continued well into the 2000s with bands like Breaking Benjamin and Three Days Grace.
>>
>>65969076
of course that tradition continued, and still continues to this day, one thing doesn't invalidate the other.
the first thing that comes to you when you think about "the reason" is immediately buttrock, and there's good reason for it. imo the fray is buttrock too.
>>
>>65968944
i tend to look at it this way:

above almost anything a buttrock song is a deception. it's just an angsty pussy pop song - one that would could be played, and possibly sound better, on a piano with a cutter chick or sad emo singing. but, to make it socially acceptible and ok for guys to listen to it, it's produced with injections of synthetic testosterone. heavy riffs ripped from old metal songs, hair band embellishments and flair, "industrial" metal vocal effects and production, slick reverbs and huge drums.

but in the end, it's still just a pop song formula, and a bitchy whiney one at best. BUT in order to sell it - the lyrics and singer have to be absolutely SEVERE. like the problem that THIS SONG RIGHT NOW is about is the WORST most serious problem ever and imagineable. you can't be real buttrock unless you take yourselves and your problems so seriously that you punch holes in the hotel walls on tour and brood deeply while groupies watch from a distance.

you think too much, you worry too much, you have extraordinary problems but unrivaled musical talent to express it, and god damn it you are fucking masculine as fuck.

Ah, Lifehouse, aka the John Mayer Band.
>>
Buttrock formula 1.1:

Intro:
>generic fingerpicking riff probably in a flat, minor tuning
>singer emulating Eddie Vedder with lyrics about basic first world dissatisfactions
>small drum roll

Verse:
>same thing as the intro, but with a "bass line that literally sounds like a fart, which is where the genre famously got it's name", as >>65968978 noted
>(classic pixies' quiet-loud-quiet , now-distorted, formula)
>small semi-second of guitar dissonance right before the chorus

Chorus:
>same chord progression from the intro, now in power chords; distorted enough to sound edgy, however, not too distorted enough to actually challenge anything
>singer sing in an octave higher to simulate emotion
>quiet again
>chorus again

Bridge:
>the peak of the lead singer's dissatisfaction
>an actually new chord progression made in order to build tension
>then we are back to the chorus
>quiet
>chorus x2
>the end: the root key of the song fading into oblivion

Someone wanna explain what the fuck a "flat, minor tuning is"? Do you mean key?
>>
>>65969298
probably in Eb minor, or Db minor, what I meant is that it's rarely in a natural, or the standard key

maybe flat keys make the song "sadder"

This song has a so good it's bad/nostalgia vibe for me. The singer's gesticulations are hilarious.

buttrock music/songs/artists are not buttrock because they're bad. they could kick ass and have tons of talent, but they're fake. it's the deception of the genre that devalues it completely. no fucking real or venerable artist has gone into or come out of buttrock.

>>65969126
>>
>>65969344
I was just trying to point out that a tuning is not the same thing as a key.
>>
there is another thing that makes me actually mad about buttrock classics: the production

it sounds like it was made to alienate the masses, I know that sounds edgy as fuck, but something about how the instruments sound, it's like it was made to sell (obviously), but I still can't figure it out what exactly makes buttrock so commercial when it comes to sound.

I mean, the vocalist tries to emulate Eddie Vedder, the guitars are distorted enough to be rebellious and create some sort of pseudo-liberation of the masses, but not distorted enough to revolutionize, the bass sounds like a fart, but I can't figure it out how to describre buttrock drumming
>>
>>65967798
Sounds like someone is jealous
>>
>>65969487
when it comes to buttrock production we can look straight to Metallica's Black Album for inspiration. like most great footnotes in musical history, it spawned and inspired a metric shitton of bad music. hundreds of tracks, double tracks, digital editing; piecing together a recording that the band could never accomplish on stage without backing tracks, layers and layers of fx, 35 microphones on the drum kit, etc.

but yes, the details in the production æsthetic are disctinct for sure, be elusive to really define

The reason it sounds almost-good is because it's just a heavily watered down version of actual grunge music. That song in particular is literally just a boring rendition of Heart Shaped Box.

This thread brings two thoughts to my mind

This really gives you a sense of the context in which the garage rock revival was so exciting. Make fun of The Strokes for being posers or whatever, but holy shit what a breath of fresh air and reclamation of what rock and roll could be (along with The White Stripes of course).

Part of the reason rock has shrunk in popularity over the past decade (if it has, which is somewhat debatable) is that rock with the prominence of indie reacted against butt rock by largely pushing it out of the genre at which point it became...country. The likes of Luke Bryan and Blake Shelton have taken the essence of what made the genre marketable, watered it down, and added a fiddle. Florida Georgia Line actually covered Last Resort at one of their concerts recently. Just like the Eagles and Tom Petty were more absorbed by country than by the rock mainstream in the 90s.

have you guys noticed that family problems are a major theme in buttrock? you know white trash families hitting each other on their porches/yards until the cops come? there are so many buttrock songs describing that situation
>>
>>65970302
Same for me. Things that now seem a little bland or oh so 2000s like Death Cab for Cutie, The Killers, or The Shins were world changing for me after thinking rock was defined by Three Days Grace and all the good stuff died in the 70s.
