>Unknown Eskimo DJs - She Be She Strike >Radio Plays, Inuit Vocal Games, Field Recordings, Classic Rock

This is pretty bizarre. This is a 30 minute recording of anonymous Inuit janitors who hijacked a radio station during a strike. Most of it is just them talking or eating food, but they occasionally play a song - either by singing along to some old songs they find or by picking up a guitar off the floor and improvising something (or they might be playing an old Inuit song I don't know, I don't know what they're saying). Some of the covers are very pretty, but most of them are more of a novelty than anything.

I honestly don't know how to rate this. I've never heard anything quite like it.

This is apparently was the holy grail for fans of Inuit radio plays, but I'm not entirely sure how many of those exist.

Jackie McLean - Destination Out! (1964)
>post-bop

Ultra-sparse and ultra-cool jazz. The brunt of the praise here should honestly go to Grachan Moncur, who composed 3 of the 4 tracks here, and pulls off a great performance on the trombone. But of course, McLean's sax is absolutely incredible, and so are the vibes, jesus christ Bobby Hutcherson is becoming my favorite jazz musician, every single record he's on he just adds so much to, and of course the drumming and bass playing is great. The main issue here is that the longest track here is the weakest by such an insane margin, which definitely proves that Moncur is a superior compser to McLean. "Kahlil the Prophet" is just a generic post-bop track, the other three tracks are interesting in their sparsity and slow pace, this track is just kinda boring. But overall, very good stuff.

3.0+

Aix Em Klemm - Aix Em Klemm (2000)
>ambient, drone

I love me some Stars of the Lid, and I don't know anything about Labradford, so I'll just talk about how much this disappointed me as a SotL fan. This is definitely a very pleasant ambient album, but it just doesn't do much interesting with it's textures and sounds. A major part of most ambient that I like are the melodies, however long and drawn-out they may be, and this record definitely lacks in that department. But I mean, it's earth-shatteringly pretty at times, and I certainly enjoyed myself at least a bit listening to it.

2.5+

Fennesz - Live in Japan (2003)
>glitch, ambient

Immediately you're thrown in to a lovely world of fuzzy glitch and busy ambient, and Fennesz doesn't let up til the performance is over. Honestly I could do without most of the straight up noisy moments, I've never thought Fennesz does noise all too well, but the serene moments are wonderful, and luckily it stays in that territory most of the time.

James Ferraro time!
> Marble Surf
Ambient drone music is boring. Literally the laziest genre of all time. This is basically Disintegration Loops minus 911. Well a little better, but still not great.
> Rerex 1
This one was playful and nostalgic, it reminds me of watching PBS and science tv shows as a kid. Definitely some early vaporwave vibes happening here. The album is similar to Last American Hero or Marble Surf in the sense that it's sort of ambient and that there's a lot of repetition, but the songs evolve so it's more hypnotic and fun to listen to.
> Condo Pets
This was the EP released to build hype for FSV, so it has a similar sound. It's a little more stripped down and seems more focused on rhythm than atmosphere. I'm going to guess that these are FSV outtakes.

Okay I'm losing my mind, I should take a break from Ferraro.

Sorry I never got to the reviews, guys. I've been playing Overwatch. Here are some lazy quick reviews.

>Django Reinhardt
I had those whole spiel written out for Django, but it just amounted to describing a few dozen tracks I particularly enjoyed. Not worth reading or writing at all. Just know that this is consistently god-tier swing and jazz guitar for all 6 hours (with surprisingly amazing violin work that is never mentioned).
>9/10

>Close Lobsters - Foxheads Stalk This Land
Decent jangle pop, kind of sound like ever jangle pop act ever but without any notable singles.
>5/10

>Aphex Twin discography
Aphex Twin was cool. 85-92 was kind of lazy-seeming, but had a chill af atmosphere. Richard D. James album was a big step up technically, but not quite as cohesive or atmospheric. Come to Daddy tried way too hard to be edgy. Windowlicker was implementing the RDJ album aesthetic with actually good songwriting and particularly cool sounds. Drukqs was a massive, wild, and surprisingly personal statement. The prepared piano bits were very Erik Satie-esque so I'm glad I just listened to that for proper reference. Syro was a surprisingly warm-sounding album, far from Aphex's usual cold metallic sound, and had an excellent piano piece at the end.

>Slowdive - Soulvaki
Souvlaki was a very nuanced approach to Shoegaze, and worked with a lot of different sounds. All fairly unassuming on their own, but piled together formed a textured, hazy sound. Decent songwriting, but the style was way more interesting.
>7/10

>Tetsu Saitoh - Stone Out
I have never heard an album so ruthless, so indiscriminating in its pursuit of good music. It incorporates elements of jazz, rock, free improv, chamber folk, western classical, and even what sounds like Chinese classical. It reaches incredible, loudly rocking highs and near-lowercase lows. It's bizarre that this isn't more popular here.

I think I'm gonna start doing a review on RYM a day along with my chart starting tomorrow.

> Aoki Takamasa and Tujiko Norko - 28
Man these Glitch Pop albums are just killing it. This one keeps it pretty downtempo throughout but its almost endearing in a way. It kind of feels like if an intimate conversation with your best friend was turned into an amazing glitchy electronic album. Noriko sounds vaguely like Bjork here and overall its all just great. Alien has this motif that sounds like it could fit right into the decade's best hypothetical pop song. Vinyl Words and 26th Floor are both gorgeous from beginning to end.

one has to consider that people actually did read books in 18 hundred and whenever it was written as that was all they had to do for leisure lots of the time, books were also relatively expensive (at least until the advent of mass production of literature) so the author wanted the reader to get the most out of it, they did this often with subplots (see Marmeladov in Crime and Punishment, totally unessessary to the plot until Dostoyevsky eventually figured out a way to shoe him into it [I like Marmeladov, don't kill me])
also there's the fact that books were often produced in journals and magazines with people paying for subscription, so they are by their very nature episodic
this is why older books spend more time on Setup and character building in the first act (it's also why War and Peace and In Search of Lost Time are so bloody long)

Started listening to Swans the other day.

Love Will Tear Us Apart is such a great cover and probably the nicest thing they've done (that I've heard so far).

I'm going chronologically (apart from a few I don't have yet) and it's pretty intense.
>>
>>65976283
chronologically is probably not the best order in which to listen to M.Gira and the Swans, if you're at Love Will Tear Us Apart already skip Burning World and leave it till after you've heard the 90's side projects (Skin, World of Skin, ect.) and The Angels of Light stuff, you'll have a greater appreciation for it that way

My Second Freeform Chart.jpg
49 KB, 1280x1024
Okay, in order to get back into the habit of writing about music, I'm going to start a free form chart. I won't be writing about everything I listen to, just the stuff that I feel like writing about. Here's the first album on the chart.

Ming Flute Ensemble - Chinese Bamboo Flute Music

At first, this was pretty cool. Some well executed fusion with the trad. Then all of a sudden, things started to get pretty lame. The 4th track "The Funy on the Horseback" is normal trad until a cheesy children's show beat comes in and just ruins the track. I don't see what the point of it was and I don't think I ever will. Then, the track after that strips itself of non-trad elements which was good. However, the next track "The Maidens of the Tea Mountain" introduces something new to the album. "What could it be?" one might wonder. The answer to that question is synths (or at least what sound like synths to me). It doesn't blend very well with the traditional instruments and just strikes me as bad. The track after that, "Chatting with an Old Friend by the Window", also adds a new non-trad element to the album. What they decided to bring in one this one was a piano, and a cheesy one too. However I have to admit, it was a pleasant kind of cheese because I'm that kind of pleb. Then comes "The Song of the Four Seasons" which removes the pianos but keeps the synths and adds a cheesy guitar. This is probably the worst track on the album along with "The Funy on the Horseback". Finally we reach "The Crab and The Egret" which is a decent more percussion heavy track which is fine but I don't care for it much here. Overall this album is okay. It's got some very good moments but gets really tacky at times. I'd rec it cause it's an interesting listen but I don't think I'll ever revisit the album outside of the tracks I like.

This was very meh. It's minimalistic drone stuff, which imo only works if the atmosphere is great. I'm not exactly sure what they were going for her regarding atmosphere, but it felt like it lacked direction.

Not really big on these kind of american singer/songwriters but this was quite good. Voice is strangely soothing and the lyrics are interesting, I could see this going up to a +

Melvins - Lysol
man, drone acts really like this one transition in particular, coulda sworn I was listening to Boris
It's decent, nothing spectacular but it does it's job, last three tracks were worse than the first 3

Art Blakey and The Jazz Messangers
pretty good, upbeat jazz
nice drums
that was, huh, wow
First track is definitely the best here, although it's pretty consistent altogether (a quality of which I look for in music)
have no Idea of how to criticism this meaningfully, I should learn music theory more in depth, "It sounded pleasant"

Ugly Casanova - Sharpen Your Teeth
kinda dull, got really exited when I realised that Diggin Holes started playing and it was that one song nobody could find a title for by that mysterious band I was sharing ages ago, but then I realised it was a bonus track on the Youtube clip I was watching from Subpop so I can't even consider it, personally I prefer the mystique of an E6/MM collaboration to be intact but whatevs

Isaac Brock's lyrics and voice are nice, the guitars are a little more country than I would have liked but they're miles better than the stuff Modest Mouse would put out in the later part of the decade

Bill Evans Trio - Waltz for Debby (1st impressions)
What the literal fuck. How is this the 4th Bill Evans album I've heard? Why did nobody tell me about this? This is easily one of the most phenomenal piano jazz albums I've ever heard, and is infinitely more enjoyable than anything else I have heard by him.
Highly recommended.

>Insect Warfare - World Extermination
Great, great album. I'm very new to the whole grindcore genre, being this one the 2nd album of that genre that i've listened to. In short, i think this album's best aspects is without a doubt is it's textures. The guitars make some of The most interesting yet brutal and spastics riffs i've heard. I like the drums, nice drums. No but seriously the drums manage to pull of The super fast >140 bpm Beat. Incredibly, and very much to my surprise, some songs were very catchy. However, my 2 main Grips to this album have to be the guttural voices, which i still can't get used to, and the length of The songs. I hate listening to songs this short, it's even kind of unbearable. All in all, i think this was a great album and i would recommend it to anyone who was interested in getting into Grindcore like i'm doing right now.
Final Score: 7.5/10

no, that's valid. it has a different feel than waltz for debby so i can obviously understand not liking as much.

What's your opinion on Everybody Loves Bill Evans? Explorations is also pretty cool with the overdubs.
>>
>>65979574
Everything I've listened to of Bill Evans fell around the 7/10 mark (incl Everybody Loves & Explorations), but I knew he was capable of much more.
Waltz for Debby is exactly what I wished I was hearing exploring Evans. I think it exemplifies his capability as a player, as well as sets a very high bar for piano jazz trios as far as interplay and atmosphere.
Like I said, I may have to revisit soon though.

This is like a Polish Comus rooted in slavic folk music. ie. it kicks fucking ass. Emotions range from peaceful and hopeful to jarring and violent. Experimental, without sacrificing any listenability. Very well put together album; the songs are different enough to never lose my interest but manage to fit together as a cohesive piece.

Nick Drake - 5 Leaves Left
Didn't grab me nearly as much as Pink Moon did
Liked the addition of the *ahem* "classical" instruments, and thought it necessary to prop up the songs, there are some good'uns here too
dunno, probably need to revisit

Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
Desolation Row is obviously the best song here, fite me
didn't really think the way that Dylan tried rock here was all that great, seems a bit non commital that the longest track here is a folk ballad, and a ballsy one at 11 minutes in length... besides the point there was a clash of styles here that didn't always go over so well

>Herbie Hancock - Headhunters
Starts really promising with the incredibly tight grooving track Chameleon, the next track, Watermelon Man, pales in comparison. Sly with a more chaotic atmosphere brings this one back on track, I like the sudden changes in tempo and shit. The closer, Vein Melter, slows things down a bit too much and almost gets too cheesy for me sometimes. All in all, everybody is so on point here that sometimes I doubt these were humans playing, but the songwriting isn't always that good imo desu senpai. 7/10, with Chameleon being the standout track.

This album was pretty good there were just a few points that annoyed me. Mainly the repeating of a syllable over and over again to fill space(Cho-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-ose). Also the lead singers voice didn't really agree with me and i don't really know why. A bit too "cutesy" maybe idk. There were some cool synth parts that i liked and some songs had sick grooves. blue triangle/10

If you've listened to his twee indie pop records first the vocals make a lot more sense because you're like, well, that's how he always sang, but with more glam rock influence now

>Wire - Chairs Missing
I missed the punkier feel of Pink Flag but it still works well as a more atmospheric album. 4/5

>The Weirdos - Weird World Vol. 1
A lot of average to good punk with some great tracks like Life of Crime and Neutron Bomb. 3/5

>Jute Gyte - Perdurance
Here it is, the most pretentious album of the year. I don't quite understand what I listened to. It's basically black metal with a lot of tempo changes, microtonal guitar, a 808 drum machine, electronic experiments and all of that weird stuff. The music as a whole is extremely ugly and bleak and I can't tell if I like it or not. It's a maze in musical form, it will require multiple listens to deconstruct. The vocals are the only easily noticeable downside, they are kinda flat.
8?/10

>Paul Jebanasam - Continuum
Behind these 3 tracks with cryptic names is a powerful exemple of what I'd call relativistic music. Like pictured in the artwork, listening to this feels like you're moving at the speed of light in a particle accelerator. Everything around you gets blurred out. Your perception on time is distorted : things seems to be moving extremely fast and extremely slow at the same time. The result is frightening and mind-shattering, almost too much for the human mind to grasp.
8/10

>Felicia Atkinson & Jefre Cantu-Ledesma - Comme un seul narcisse
Composed of various field recordings sparsely accompanied by piano and electronics. The additional intrumentation brings the already disjointed an contextless recordings into a more abstract field. Everything is very calm, you hear people talking, a dog, silverware... The titles of the tracks spell out OBJETS MELANCOLIQUES, "melancholic objects" and this melancholy is indeed present throughout all the album.
7/10

Just listened to Eureka for the first time and I loved it, one of the best records I've heard in a while.

Where should I go from here with O'Rourke's discography, and are there other works that have a similar sound to Eureka beyond Van Dyke Parks?

also whats your guys favorite Lynch film?

Scott Walker - Tilt
that was fucking weird
not 'really a huge fan of the vocal style, sounded a bit like Anthony and the Johnsons, although I have had it explained to me by a music student that it is a superior way of singing... Tuco confirmed pleb 2016
it's effective on the first and second track but gets kind of ridiculous after that, I get what he was going for but it doesn't really work that well
the instrumentation is pretty good, suitably spooky scary and psuedo-industrial a v a n t m e m e, can't get over the voice though, might need another listen

Scott Walker - 4
Ok, back on more conventional ground here, his voice is way better on this one because he's not trying to sound silly... not the greatest fan of the scat, or scat in general, bit gross
the instrumentation also is more pastoral and baroque
comparison is inherently unuseful though
it's good, whadya want

Sonic Youth- Confusion is Sex/Kill Yr Idols

Sonic Death is pretty appropriate here. This album is strange, alternating between slow burning creepy sounds (Protect Me You) and full on feedbacky assault (I Wanna Be Yr Dog, Kill Yr Idols, Confusion is Next). One thing that especially stands out is the vocals. I have always been pretty neutral on Sonic Youth's collective singing, but now I have to look at it negatively (on their later albums), after hearing how good it is here, especially Kim, who sounds like a good Lydia Lunch. But mostly, Sonic Youth don't sound like their contemporaries, instead sounding even weirder, trying to create atmosphere instead of just overwhelming with sound. The two drummers here aren't as good as Steve Shelley, but they definitly play well here, especially on Early American. Overall this is a very fantastic noise rock album, and the best SY release I've heard thus far.

8.5+/10

Alright so here's the best my dysgraphic ass could do for the tourney.

>Joe Harriott Amancio D'Silva Quartet- Hum Dono
Pretty decent jazz album. Had a nice African Traditional feel at some points. Of particular note were the drums, the bass., and the wordless vocals.
>Best Track: Hum Dono or N.N.N.T
>8/10

>Captain Capa- Saved My Life
Not bad actually, just pretty unremarkable. A few songs stood out by being really catchy, but most just blended into one amalgam of monotony.
>Best Track: Faraday
>6/10

>Fishmans- 98.12.28
Jesus H. Christ, this is a good album. I don't even know what to say about this, besides the fact that I've listened to it on YouTube about five times in the past few days. Best moment is that repetitive piano on Long Season
>Best Track- ひこうき or Long Season
>9.5/10

>The United States of America- S/T
I didn't like this at all. Had a few alright moments, but I don't have much to say about it.
>Best Song: Where Is Yesterday
>2/10
