Damn... I guess you should've been more professional. How hard would it be to maintain a good ratio once you get in? I'm into ''weird'' music myself (jazz, jazz fusion, prog) and private trackers like rutracker, kat, soulseek have never let me down. That being said, is there an advantage of going through all the trouble of getting into what.cd?

Its really nice, but as you can see from op
s experience they are pretentious as fuck.

I got my account revoked after they decided the forum i was invited to the site on ''should be on their list'' . They essentially found out i took an invite that was privately offered to me and revoked my membership .

The ''test'' is autistically too difficult for me to ''memorize''. Im not waiting 3 hours every day to be judged by some neckbeard whatcd fuck.

That's like the time I was trying to get on this private Gmod role playing server. I went over their list of rules beforehand and studied them. I thought I had it. I wait in "line" for 2 hours to get an interview.

I get on the mic in TeamSpeak with this baby. He starts asking me questions. I think I'm doing great. Then he asks me some shit that wasn't even on the rule sheet.

I get denied and told I can try back again in 2 weeks.

2 weeks.

I gotta wait and be judged by some lil nerd? I learned my lesson.

Fuck vidya
>>
>>65948359
You have to wait for 3 hours to even get someone to interview you? Wow...
>>
>>65948421
I'm trying to make a decision if it's worth it to take the time to get into what.cd considering my taste in music. I don't see what your point is.

>private Gmod role playing server
Anything gmod server that requires even a minute of effort is probably not worth it.
>>
>>65948466
Yeah, for real. I was in a bad place at that time in my life.
>>
Are there some music trackers that are similar to what.cd, but easier to get into? Does something like that even exist?
>>
You'd think with an interview as autistic as what's, you'd expect them to be more lenient on their ratio.

>inb4 seedboxes
The second you pay money to pirate is the second piracy loses it's meaning. Just buy the album at that point.
>>
>>65948500
>pay money to pirate

Why pay for internet access, a computer, and electricity? Why not just go to the store and steal the album?
>>
>>65948516
Are you fucking retarded?

You pirate so you can get shit for free. Once you've reached the point where you are paying money so you get shit for free, then what's the point of even pirating? If you are going to pay money on a seedbox, why not just pay money for an actual copy of an album.
>>
>>65948545
Because I can get an unlimited amount of albums for like $15 a month with my seedbox. Also the seedbox helps keep my ISP from snooping on my traffic, as well as keeping my home internet from getting super slow from torrent seeding.

Why is soulseek bad?
>>
I posted about this in a tangential thread a few days ago, but if I'm being honest, I'd say you're at least three years late on the WCD train, if not more. Basically, on private torrent sites like WCD, you need to maintain a certain ratio of uploaded data to downloaded data, which is done by "seeding", or leave the stuff you download in your torrent client, and also leave your torrent client running as long as possible, in hopes of others downloading from you, which the tracker gives you credit for. If you don't do this, you will never be able to download more than 500MB of music. And WCD is very strict about this: if you can't maintain "ratio" (upload divided by download) you will be limited from downloading, and eventually banned. If you're used to public trackers or DDL sites, where once you download you have no obligation to make the files available to others, WCD can be pretty harsh.

In the past, this burden was relieved by a periodic sidewide "freeleech," during which no matter how much you downloaded, no data counted against your ratio. However, any data you uploaded counted for your ratio -- and of course, everyone went crazy downloading, feeding back, giving each other plenty of ratio. I'm not entirely sure why, but in recent years (since 2013 or so) sitewide FL's have been much rarer. Basically, if you're just starting out on WCD today, it's much harder to get precious ratio without a dedicated server, or by filling other's requests for paywalled Bandcamp releases or ebooks (WCD also "hosts" ebooks), or possibly having a large collection of obscure music that you take the time to rip, or having access to quality copies of big albums (think TLOP or the new Avalanches) before they're publicly released. That's not to say it's impossible to get enough "buffer" (excess upload credit) to download as you wish, but it certainly takes more work than it used to.

tl;dr not worth it, sorry, at least there's soulseek/rutracker/the archive
>>
>>65949072
>dedicated server
you can easily get good ratio with a 5€/$ month VPS seedbox with ruTorrent and autodl-irssi configured to instantly snatch new releases by popular artists.
>>
>>65948826
I don't think it's bad, but you do have to provide some of your music for other people to download. Other than that, download speeds are not that great, but you can find all kinds of music.
>>
>>65949072
How do you get music from the archive exactly? I'm not familiar with it.
>>
>>65949291
Search the name of the album followed by "mega" and it should pop up with a link from a sharethread. Sometimes links die, sometimes they don't. It's kind of a crapshoot but I've been able to find everything I need in either the archive, ru.tracker, or a random blogspot page.

Guys, I am closing this thread now.
>>
>>65949409
I know it's bait, but please enlighten us all. What do you listen to? Top 40 summer hits? I consider those genres of music ''weird'' to 90% of the population. I'm not saying I'm better than anyone for listening to those genres of music. I'm a musician and I've opened up my ears a bit to new sounds.
>>
>>65947736
soulseek > wcd
>>
>>65949521
You're not in public, you're on 4chan those genres are not by any means weird here and the way you said it seemed as if you wanted people to be impressed by your """"taste"""".
>>
>>65949636
I've already explained that I do not consider myself better than anyone else for listening to the genres of music I listen to. Do you have any actual advice related to the thread?

The reason what.cd has gone to shit as of recent is because many people like OP have gotten in. That interviewer should have permabanned you.
>>
>>65948081
>>
>>65947736
Just get a fucking soulseek and download all the albums you'll ever need instantly in high quality without being a cuck who sits 8 hours for some clown to interview you or having to keep up a ratio.
>>
>>65949865
Harsh, but true words.

Your rebuttal, OP? Have you any scathing remarks about the challengers strange genres?
>>
>>65949941
This for real.

I was away from soulseek for a long time and started using it again and everyone here was all, "soulseek is bad and slow and hurrrrr".

I didn't know what they were talking about. Good to see people don't know what the fuck they're talking about.
>>
>>65949401
Not him, but streaming services offer way lower quality overall. Netflix is probably 720p upscaled where private trackers offer the full bluray rips.

The same goes for music, higher quality in the end and a broader collection.

You can squeak by with RU and SLSK and what have you but it's really not hard to maintain a ratio on what, no seedbox needed. Amass a collection of what torrents (usually through staff picks, freeleeches and smaller events, your own d/ls) and it'll start to snowball.

With what, you get the best consistency (file quality, tagging) vs. other services, access to whatever audio quality you want, and you get the privilege of being able to say "if a song or album exists on the internet, it will be on what and I can obtain it easily." It's a nice feeling to be that guy who can hook his friends up with all the obscure shit that they were never able to find, and make mix CDs as gifts better than anyone else.

What makes you work for the privilege through ratio (which in turn fosters a community). RU and SLSK make you work by forcing you to look elsewhere 10-20% of the time, and have you feeling unsatisfied another good 30-50% of the time. I used both in lieu of what.
>>
>>65950962
I've been using soulseek for an year and I can count on my hands the number of times I didn't find an album in 320kbps retard (and even then, I found it elsewhere)

Time, money, sanity, pride. All four can be used as resources to preserve the others.

I'm sorry to see that you hardly value your time and sanity. People don't realize that being overly frugal and spending as much effort as possible to achieve an inconsequential endgoal is flat out harmful.
