Houston pawnshop doesn't know what they have. Its an old US Kramer XL24 aluminum neck bass:

http://houston.craigslist.org/msg/5653113516.html

If any Houstonbros want it, you'd better hurry. I already posted the link on TalkBass because there are less faggots there.

Browsing craigslist out of habit is how you find good deals.

Scott Grove had a guide for how to browse for good deals, wait until near the end of the month and people will pawn anything off for nothing.

IS THIS THE PROPER ORDER OF TURNING THIS ON?

>plug in the power
>leave it on "standby" for 1 minute
>flip from "standby" to full or half
>turn power switch to "ON"

AND TURNING OFF?
>turn power switch to "Off"
>move output from full/half to "Standby"
>unplug amp
>>
>>65943892
That's weird, most pawn shops at least google the shit they get in.

>>65943921
Ever heard of Offerup? I got an all solid wood acoustic for $100 and a nice Sony Trinitron for retro vidya
>>
>>65944936
Please tell me your kidding

The switch should always be on standby when it's off, flick the on switch and leave it on for a minute then switch to full or half

To turn off switch to standby and then off
>>
>>65944936
No need to let it warm up for a minute, the heaters normally don't take more than around 8-15 seconds depending on the amp design. Other than that yes.

Also MAKE SURE you have it plugged into a speaker load. Running a tube amp sans load will blow the transformers.

>>
>>65943892
Oh lord the description says it's a custom bass from Badass simply because it has a Badass Bridge. That's gold
>>
>>65945076
Think about it

Why would changing it from standby to full with the power off do anything?

When you flip the switch to turn it on it should be on standby to let the tubes warm up, then when they're ready flip from standby to full/half
>>
>>65944936
Standbys do dick unless you flick it like a tremolo to try to wreck your power supply or leave your amp running on SB for days to burn out your tubes.

When the amp is warming up your signal won't pass the preamp tubes. Full 500v supply and a few volts from the grids aren't going to strip the oxide layer off your tube cathodes.
>>
>>65945076
Oh my bad didn't read your post carefully. Flip it on while the switch is still in standby, then flip the standby switch.

I use a Fender P bass since I tried the other options I considered (Jazz and a Ric) and it felt the most right to me. I use an SVT since that was the amp that gave me the tone I was after and consistently sounds great. I use D'addario strings since they tend to have a great sound to me and have a good lifespan. Lastly Dunlop Green Picks since I used Blues and they were too thick, switched to Green and it's been perfect (tried the yellows once, no good)
>>
>>65944896
I buy rondo guitars because I know what I'm getting and how to fix it. I use D'Addario strings because they've lasted me the longest between a few brands(for guitar) and because nobody makes a set as versatile as chromes for bass.

I don't really have a commitment to these brands, but I'm not even decided a bit on what amps I like. I'm fed up with ampeg, the amps have no versatility at all.
>>
>>65945890
Chromes aren't that versatile. They start out very bright and mellow with age.
>>
Hi /gg/.
I've been playing guitar for a few years, with a pretty horrid acoustic and a fake strat.

I'm looking to get a decent electric that is somewhat versatile because I don't have a particular style I want to play more than another. I'm in Australia and I've been looking at the following:
- Gretsch Electromatic Pro Jet
- Epiphone Les Paul Pro
- Squier Classic Vibes 50s Strat & Tele
- Yamaha Revstar 420 series

I'd get something better however guitars made in the US are generally a lot more expensive here. I don't know anything, enlighten me please. Very difficult to choose between the above models, make some suggestions or call me an idiot. Any brand or model suggestions would be good. I'm verging on an intermediate player. Thank you
>>
>>65946259
Also, I've looked at international shipping with sites like sweetwater and it looks alright, however I'm wary, having had no experience.
>>
>>65946259
The Gretsch by far
>>
>>65946449
Why?
>>
>>65946259
I have fun with my schectar had it for years, sounds wonderful and is decently cheap.
and I don't play metal
>>
>>65946501
Gretsch's are the coolest guitar.
>>
>>65946259
If you want versatility, you want a guitar with more than one kind of pickup.

What decides your guitar's playability is mostly the fretwork. If you can't find a guitar with good fretwork for a decent price near you, you can just get a guitar with good features and have a local luthier fix up the frets.

Made in america guitars are nothing special. Don't worry about the country of origin, just try to find something most people online agree is a good product. Don't look at reviews on amazon or online articles. Read reviews on forums like thegearpage, gearslutz, guitarnutz, tdpri, etc.
>>
>>65946575
I don't know much about schectar, only seen a few glimpses but I'll look into them
>>65946588
Gretsch are the prettiest to me, I like the sound they produce but I just want to weigh my options as this is a big choice to me. Can you mention any specific models?
I'm looking at the G5421, G5441T & G5435T at the moment

I've got a Vox modeling amp, and an epiphone hummingbird pro, I've got an old Kent hollowbody on layaway at a local pawnshop. I'm buying a Squier VM Jazzmasters this week. Are GFS pickups (JM90 I think, "vintage", ~8K) a worthwhile upgrade from the stock pickups? Or should I just save up for Duncan's/Dollars/etc? Considering that pickups are just magnets/wire I feel like there has to be meme snake oil in play here beyond a point.

What blows about it? I've only played one briefly at a store unplugged.
>>
>>65948187
I had it as my main electric for over a year. Did pretty much every recommended upgrade except new pickups. I replaced the bridge, set it up for heavy strings, and shimmed the neck.
Still, it had bad sustain and sounded darker and just worse than all my other single coil guitars. Didn't stay in tune at all. HEAVY as all fuck.
The body shape is comfy though for sitting down.
I have the parts still lying around, I am gonna make it a jazzblaster eventually.

>>65948339
If you have tuning problems, it'll be because of the nut. The guitar ships with 9s but Jazzmasters need the tension of at least 11s. Since the nut is cut for 9s though, big strings get caught in the smaller slots. So you might need a new one

I plan on using 10-52. Will that cause problems?

>Rondo guitars
Fucking THIS. Rondo is the absolute shit. Dirt cheap guitars and basses that sound good and play excellent with minimal teching. Speaking of which...

My question for y'all is that I bought a seven-string baritone with a 27 in scale and I want to tune it to Drop G#; I bought a 0.90 string, will that be too heavy? When I buy strings, I tend to make sure each string has approximately the same tension, so for this guitar I did each string for about 32 lbs of tension. According to D'addario's calculator, the total tension of the stock set was about 230 lbs total in standard (BEADGBE), and that's about 32*7.

Would my guitar explode with this setup? (Pic is stock photo of my model, Douglas Hadron 727)

Most of my guitars I can't sell for what I reckon they're worth so I keep using them. But I like the mid 2000's Epi SG for stoner rock stuff. It doesn't sound right in E, but in C or D it sounds good.

My bass I use because I picked it up while shopping for something else, and liked it enough that I went in and bought it the next week. Still sounds better then any other bass I've used.

I horde pedals, and all my amps I got cheap and they don't sound terrible, so it works.

It's perfectly fine if you can work your way around it. The only issue is you need ridiculously thick strings if you ever go below B standard (which is already around .62 iirc)
I still wouldn't get one for it, but saying they're not good for metal is stupid, plenty of bands use them.

I play metal on an Ibanez Gio. The action is ass, and there's a huge heel that gets in the way once you get past the 15th fret.
And guess what, I can still play metal on it, no one spends the whole track up so high on the neck. Not even technical death metal and its wankfest does.

I recently discovered I jave a skin allergy to nickel. For years I used Ernie Ball standard slinkys (the greenish pack) and just thought I had eczema. I stopped practicing for a while and it went away, but immediately started again when I got back into it. Guise, I've been playing guitar 11 years, and it has truly dawned on me. I suck!!
I simply can not play anything cleanly. I can play some pretty advanced stuff and can be pretty fast at times, but I'm sloppy as fuck

Is there anything I can do or do I basically just need to start from scratch and reteach myself how to play while going as slow as possible? I couldn't dream of playing live or even with a small audience, I can't even play a whole song all the way through without mistakes and muted notes
>>
i just bought a used ESP LDT EX 50 from a pawn shop for $160. i've only been playing 7-8 months but i couldn't detect anything wrong with the sound or playing coming from chinese made squier bullet strat. the only thing physically that seems wrong is that the pickup near the fretboard is receeded lower into the guitar and both pickups can wobble back and forth if you push on them. is that normal? was it a good deal? they only had like 8 guitars and the others would've needed massive repairs or simply didn't work when you plugged them into the amp, or were left handed
>>
Ok. I'm finally trying to start being disciplined about technique. Let's say I'm playing a repeated pattern by hitting the low E twice and the A once, should I strictly alt pick the pattern, or go up (E), down (E), down (A) cos that seems easier? Also, do you guys strictly alt pick when you're improvising? If not, does playing the most economical picking pattern come instinctively or do you consciously plan it in your head? Thanks
>>
>>65956695
The screws on the pickup covers that are in the middle of the short sides raise/lower the pickups, the wobbling is normal, they're supposed to be at the same angle the strings are at so they're parallel. It doesn't mean much if they're not perfectly angled.

160 bucks for an EX 50 with no real faults is a pretty decent deal I'd say.
>>
>>65956695
Yes I have an ltd and that's just how it is. Only thing you should worry about is if the bridge pup isn't parallel to the strings, in which case you should tighten the pickup

Start from scratch. Sloppy playing after years of practice probably means you didn't learn the right way and possibly that you got some bad habits too. Spotting and correcting those bad habits will be the first step. Always work with a metronome and don't rush the learning phases. Being in a band also helps a lot.

m8, I have owned 5 rondo guitars, my brother has 2, and none of them needed "repair" from the factory, just setups. The fretwork wasn't perfect on each and every one, but it sure as hell was as good as you can get anywhere for the price. Nothing extreme at all. I seriously have to wonder if the people who shit on rondos just suck at setting up guitars.

If you factor in the cost of leveling frets/filing the nut, you still have the cheapest option for quality around.
>>
>>65955794
It's not a big deal but you'll have less temperature change at a slower pace in a case. It'll also protect the guitar from excess moisture. That all basically just means you have to screw with the truss rod a lot less.

The only ones I've played are a valencia classical which was pretty good and a hadean steel string which was pretty bad. The SX electrics are good, but I dunno if the acoustics are. At any rate, cheap acoustics are almost universally made of thicker wood than most people want for tone, but not everyone finds that bad. Personally I like thinner, lighter guitars when it comes to nylon strings. If you're just looking for something to practice on it's probably a pretty safe bet. If there's anything wrong with it return it.

honestly, i rarely ever switch out my strings kek. its only until one of them busts that i buy another set. the sound of them does tend to dull out rather quickly in contrast to steel stringed guitars though I've noticed. also, knotting the strings at the bottom isnt that hard. just don't cut your stings right away because you'll need extra slack to tie them correctly.
