I have both (instrumental and non instrumental) and I love Attila. He's leagues more expressive than Dead and sounds all out morbid and very unique. He's what makes this album REALLY stand out among the norwegian greats.
I also have the studio tapes where Dead sings Freezing moon and it would have been okay as well, but in the end I'm happy he died.

Attila was great, but I still like Dead better. Attila's vocals on that are unique, yes. It sounds like throat singing to me, which lends this extra folky vibe. But Dead's shrieks were incredibly and I always thought they sounded more passionate - and at the time they were recorded, it wouldn't really matter how typical they were to the genre.

I don't care much for anything after the first 3 albums. But I gotta be honest... The God Seed Wacken performance in 2008 when Gaahl and King first left, but they only played Gorgoroth material... That was one of the most solid Black Metal live recordings I've ever seen. They had a bunch of naked people on crucifixes, skinned sheep heads impaled on stage, pyrotechnics, everyone's corpsepaint was spooky, the band played really tight, Gaahl's vocals were at their best. And they didn't even make any statements in between songs, they just started playing and left the stage when they were done. And the whole band just stared at the crowd the entire time. It was grim as fuck.

Gaahl is a great vocalist - at least he had been most of his career. I'm almost a newschool on Gorgoroth because of it. As far as straightforward harsh, evil, inhuman black metal vocals that don't sound like a kid doing a Wicked Witch of the West voice go, Gaahl is top notch. I mean I get that maybe the earlier vocals are more challenging to the audience, whereas Gaahl sounds smoother and more badass - I like Hat and Pest, too, and I see the appeal but Gaahl is something else.

I think his live performances are usually weak to be honest. Like I'm not a fan of that creaky sound of his voice that's in the Krakow concert and other recordings. His studio work is great though.
I think all the vocalists served their purpose though. I would even believe Hat shot his voice out doing the shit he did. Katharinas Bortgang is easily their best song.

A friend of mine asked me to tell him albums similar to Greed and Holy Money. I told him this. Unfortunately I can't think of any other except for maybe the Godflesh EP and Fall of Because (but that one's not very metal and some of the song are early versions of the ones on Streetcleaner). Later Godflesh is awesome (Pure and Selfless) but too bad they sound nothing like this.
