The Mothers Of Invention - Uncle Meat (1st impressions)
Goofy fake jazz with comparatively weak performances from the Mother's lineup.
Zappa is not a very good composer, and resorts to humour and cliche's to make up for this. It sounds like a marching band got drunk and tried to play Duke Ellington tunes.
This album is proof that he shouldn't stray too far away from the rock spectrum.

Gary Burton - A Genuine Tong Funeral (1st impressions)
This is like a much less focused 'Escalator Over the Hill'. The compositions are underwhelming and most instruments seem under-utilized.
The musicianship is great but lacks the grand illustrious feel they were going for. The interplay is awkward and misdirected at times.

Yeah I think it's waned on me a bit. It feels a little light when it should be heavier. It's possibly just the mix, but the end experience is still a little tamer than it could be I think.

Still a great album, but I'm currently leaving it an 8 instead of edging the 9.

>Art Ensemble of Chicago - Les Stances a Sophie
I heard the opening song of this album a couple months ago in plug and loved it but I only just got round to listening to it in full. It was disappointing, Theme de Yoyo is a fantastic track, it's the type of jazz I like, I need it to be held together by a nice groove. The rest i just found a tad boring. Not sure what to rate this since I only liked 1 song but I think I liked that one song enough to be a 3/5

>Morphine - Cure the Pain
Like Les Stances a Sophie, I was excited to listen to this album after hearing one song from it. I love the title track but again the rest of the album just didnt work very well. 2.5/5

>I missed a positive Michael Yonkers review
Shit, when?
>>
>>65940109

His mixing of 60s psych and the New Orleans sound is amazing. It takes the best of what I like of both and makes something great out of it - Dr. John's tripped out bluesy voice, the heavy groove throughout, the horns, the hypnotic strings and backing vocals - it all works together perfectly and in a way nobody else really has done. And if you give Gris Gris a chance to grow on you, it will. As will most of Dr. John's early years.

If you're familiar with some voodoo folklore, a lot of the lyrics are more than their drugged out nature might make them seem. Like, I Walk On Gilded Splinters is about a dangerous journey into a spiritual realm. Because I find voodoo to be one of the more interesting things out there, it's icing on the cake.

I don't really expect this to be an album that everyone thinks is perfect, but it's definitely one of my all time favorites.
>>
>>65940744
I barely reviewed it, think I just made an offhand comment about it being nice.

It's great, feels like it might be custom made for me with the psych, punk and noise aspects of it.

Graham Lambkin and Jason Lescalleet - The Breadwinner
Absolutely beautiful and relaxing. These two play everything and the kitchen sink (probably). So many different sounds on this album yet it still sounds sparse enough to be very calming and organized. Definitely on par with Salmon Run, and I like it much better than Songs About Nothing.
8/10

Just remembered, the translator dude had some issues, but said 98.12.28 should be done by Weds for anyone that cares.

>>65943979
I honestly don't know that much about the dudes, other than Shinji died from a heart condition he had his whole life, and their violinist who played on their later albums + their last show died in an unrelated car accident, though some people mix the two up and it's a common rumor that Shinji died in a car accident.

From what I can tell, Shinji was pretty quiet and apparently from what I heard on some forum, had terrible stage fright. I can't find it on YouTube right now, (it was probably removed, their label is sort of anal) but there's this one TV interview where the other two members have to do all the talking, and Shinji just kind of looks at the floor the whole time. I'd love to have it translated some day.

>>
>>65944207
While I know you're joking, some people do say shit like "lmao glad to know people in Japan smoke weed too" when referring to Fishmans. However, from what I've heard, any drug harder than cigarettes are extremely taboo in Japan. Not only would those who are caught in possession of it be charged with 5 or more years in prison, but they'd probably have to go through Yakuza just to get any sort of drug.

I do find it odd though, considering their largest influences.

>>65944261
Yeah it seems contradictory, but apparently he said in some interview he wants to have a good relationship with his fans and for them to enjoy themselves, despite his stage fright.

This actually made me appreciate the talking parts on 98.12.28 more, because I think some may have thought he was pretentious or conceited because he rarely said much in interviews and was very quiet, but it showed he genuinely wanted to have a relationship with his fans.

9.2

Arca - Stretch 1 & 2
They're pretty meh, some nice tracks on both though. I'd definitely replay this shit in the background some time.
7.1, 6.7.

Arca - &&&&&
Damn this is more like it. I like this. Arca's early shits so sexy. I'd have some hardcore lusty gay sex with mutliple guys to this and the Stretch EPs playing on repeat. 7.7

Arca makes great music also for browsing the Hood By Air catalogue, and wishing I could afford it, and then going onto Grailed and wishing I could still afford it. Thrifted Gucci for now I guess :(

>tricot - The
Awesome Math Rock with excellent technical skill and more importantly a pop sensibility you don't see in too many albums of the genre. Also hear some jazz influence in here in the vocal deliveries and the arrangements and definitely digging that. Artsick and Swimmer are both amazing songs and this will be getting a lot of relistens from me over the next few days.

Greetings /Daily/! Long time no see.

This last year of my life has been my busiest ever, so I haven't had much time to be posting on this Turkish rug making board. In a day's time I'll be on my way to China for about 10 or so days.

The flight there is over 30 hours, so I'm looking for some recs to help me bide my time. Could you guys help me out? Hopefully when I return I can give my thoughts on them.

(In the past year I've been enjoying Yo La Tengo, Mercury Rev, Fishmans, Jim O'rourke, Sonic Youth, Stereolab, toe, Built to Spill, Unwound, Bluetile Lounge, The Books, Can, The Olivia Tremor Control, and Slowdive)

>Bruce Smear - Chlorine
I didn't really enjoy this. The interesting stuff he was doing was fleeting and he had the knack for repeating and looping the most obnoxious noises here. The songs progress decently, but their foundation is built on overly-nostalgic noises that just don't sound good. There's some cool stuff here, but overall not a fan.

whoo this is going to make people angry

Tortoise - TNT
Midtempo softrock jazzwank with almost nothing interesting about it
This was really bland and kinda cheesy, it all converges in on itself into a mush of generic 'post rock' instrumentation
Then they throw some bleeps and bloops in for good measure, which don't really add anything to anything
I enjoyed some of the textures in the first and second tracks but then it went downhill fast
it's kinda bad

I personally think it deserves higher, but admittedly it has become pretty dated and almost cheesy. Manzerick's keyboards are godly but their timbre really don't help that cheesiness factor. If only every song was as good as "The End" on that album.

>>65949578
TNT is far inferior to Millions Living Now. TNT tries too hard to be more dynamic post rock but I think the band is still too subtle to pull it off that well. So yeah, I was pretty bored by TNT myself. Bottom line: don't discredit MLNWND if you still haven't listen to it.

Judee Sill - Judee Sill (1971)
>singer/songwriter, chamber folk

The main draw here are the vocals, which are wonderful. Very raw and passionate but still pleasant to listen to. The songwriting is mostly good too, but nothing to write home about, save for the classic "Jesus Was a Cross Maker", which is a great tune that is totally ruined by its production. And that's the prevailing theme throughout this whole album. Since I can't write anything about an album without comparing it to another album, I'm gonna call this a predecessor to Neil Young's Harvest in many ways. It would be wonderful as a more stripped-down folky album, and the moments that touch upon these more raw motifs are great, but I just can't stomach these baroque arrangements and the double-tracked vocals. Other artists can do them well when these elements enhance their songs and they just feel like a natural, on this album they just feel totally tacked on. It's sad, because there's obviously a great album beneath all the stuff I don't like.

2.0+

Big L - Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous (1995)
>east coast hip hop, boom bap, hardcore hip hop

Big L's murderer was shot to death yesterday, which made me realize that maybe I should check out this insanely acclaimed album I've never heard. The first thing I have to mention is that the lyrics here are absolutely asinine, but honestly that's part of the charm. It reminds me a lot of Enter the Wu-Tang, honestly, but not as good. It's still a very good record though, Big L's flow is insane and the production isn't anything to sneeze at either. Still suffers from the pretty bad features and a general lack of any standout tracks.

I reckon Daydream Nation through to Washing Machine is your best bet for quality Sonic Youth

Sonny Sharrock - Black Woman (1st impressions)
Holy shit this is absolutely wonderful. The emotional delivery of guitar is unlike anything I've heard, and his wife's screams really add to the atmosphere.
Sharrock makes every string on his guitar sound like a separate instrument, creating layers of dissonance, anguish, hopefulness and spiritual expression.
The first 4 songs are essential; the last track seems out of character for the album and a little trying at times, which bumps it down half a point from the otherwise brilliant performances.

Ron Anderson (PAK) - Secret Curve
8/10
Jarring avant prog. It's an album that gets better as it progresses, sucking you into its unique sound. One of my personal favorites of the 2010s.

ENDVRA - Black Eden
5/10
Quiet and mysterious, dark and brooding but often boring and cheesy. Would be open to listening to more of this style, just found this one uninteresting.

The Aasee Lake - Two Song Introduction To A Suicide Letter
8/10
I would describe this as Slint but happier

first one gets a bit stale quickly, other two are right up my alley, thanks!

Boris - Feedbacker
Something about this that just puts the hairs on my chest
goddamn that was fun
at a loss for words here, that was fucking great

Faust - IV
not as great as their debut in that it doesn't go as far experimentally, this is the main problem, they've tried to produce neater, poppier songs, and it pays off sometimes but then at others it really doesn't
there were some good songs on the front end, Jennifer, Sad Skinhead, Kreutrock, in that order of greatness, the last 2 tracks were good as well

Just finished listening to this. It's a weezer demo from before the blue album with two unreleased songs and higher quality versions of other demos. Would highly recommend if you are a weezer fan.
Here's the thread about it:

Tomasz Stanko Quintet - Music for K
This just wasn't that great or fun.
Still good musicianship to make up for the uninspired compositions.

Absolutely gorgeous
It's kinda obvious they are influenced by AF and try to be them, but it works
It's a bit more dreamy and cozier
The louder math rock / post rock bits were the most exciting, but it's a cool mixture between these and slower, softer songs.
Albums seems to be evolving a bit near the end, getting a climax in the 11th and 12th track, then falling back into calmer sequences and ending with a lovely outro
vocals are also neat
