Hey everybody, hope yall are having an ok day today. So I tend to leave my feedback ON soundcloud because I really like to be able to listen/comment/like/follow all in the same window and not switch back and forth trying to keep track of different people that i'm tryna give feedback so yep im gonna be doing that! I do my best to return feedback/likes/follows on soundcloud, if you leave me a comment I will do my best to give you one back because we are friends. Gonna be honest dude, It's pretty meh. The horns don't really jive with the rest of the sounds and the song at the top of the profile just sounds like it sort of "meanders" along without any real groove or purpose. It just sounds kind of slapped together. Listening to some of your other stuff, it sounds like you rely pretty heavily on presets. Try to build tighter compositions and you'll draw in more listeners and you won't have to ask people to leave feedback. I'm gonna be honest, It was really rough just to listen through your entire first song, And I skipped around through most of the other ones on your page. Focus on songwriting (hooks/grooves etc). Or if the point of your songs is to sound drony and hap-hazard on purpose well... You pretty much got as much feedback as that sort of "genre" usually gets around here. I hope this helps.

Holy shit, are we supposed to all hold our breaths? It's not up to everyone else to give a fuck about your music, it's up to YOU to give a fuck about your music. And if you don't give a fuck enough about your music to take to heart the feedback (or lack thereof) that you receiving, than you don't deserve recognition.
If you don't receive any likes or follows or feedback, then it means that either
A) people aren't even interested enough in your stuff to spend time critiquing it (usually when it sounds like you don't even take it seriously yourself)
or
B) People are maybe being nice and not dousing your soundcloud page with hundreds of harsh critiques because to most people who take their shit seriously, a bunch of negative comments on a SC sound is embarrassing.
If you're a noob or you're crappy and you know it but you're honestly trying to improve, then ask for honest feedback and incorporate it into your work moving forward.
Buying ableton and throwing a bunch of presets onto a song (which is obvious as hell, no effort) and then acting like you're hot shit (like Ronnie regularly does) turns people off. It turns people off online, and it turns people off in the real world. There's a reason he only has like 50 followers. There's a lot of artists out there who are no more skilled than Ronnie that manage to get more followers and plays... And it's because they don't act like douchebags.

Nice dude. Keep going at it. Maybe try mastering the basics (mixing/grooves/composition) and then adding in "the crazy shit" angles lol. Most stuff that is produced to "sound crazy" sounds a lot crazier and "accidental" than it actually is. Just a thought.

I see your point. I haven't been a part of these threads for a couple weeks, so that makes sense if he's being a dick. I agree that there's a certain circlejerk culture in here often that is pretty unconstructive. It's to the point where I actually hesitate to give harsh feedback because i feel as if I'm the only one doing it. I just don't want it to go the other way where the thread is just made up of bitter dudes and trolls shitting all over other people's stuff. But i agree if he's being a dick it's talk shit and get hit and actively rejecting feedback lines up with that.

Exactly. And back when I was first starting out, I had plenty of people say "This sucks". And I didn't whine about it or tell them "fuck off, I'm awesome".... I wouldn't even ask for specifics. Because "This is really bad" "This sucks" "This is cancer". Those are all just really blunt ways of saying "Nothing about this is working". Which can be frustrating, because if EVERYTHING sucks (The mix/the vocals/the melody/the composition/the instrumentation/the execution) that means to gain respect and get noticed you gotta go back to square 1 and relearn everything you thought you were doing well.
"Cancer/10" can be harsh words to hear, but If you can pick yourself up and learn from the feedback, you can improve.

Well and the other confusing part of this is that not even everyone's specific criticism is something you should take to heart because so much is subjective. For example I make very lo fi music cause I think it sounds cool to me. I use shitty tape recorders I find at thrift stores to record with and it hisses and it sounds like ...shit, but in a way that I like. If somebody told me that my stuff sucked because I need to record in a pro studio and not have so much reverb I'd probably write it off totally because they're not my audience. But you can't make that kind of call if people just nail you with generic "this is bad" comments because that's not objective. I don't really know what I'm rambling about anymore but I just felt like it.

I mean of course. But some things are just "Bad", you know? Like those poor people that would be in the first couple weeks of American Idol. They're so talentless, so clueless about their own lack of talent, that there really is no nice thing to do other than to discourage them from continuing to play to their weaknesses. I've always been naturally musically gifted. When I was in college I desperately wanted to be a lead singer/songwriter. Guess what? Every single song I wrote and performed was met with awkward glances at the ground, or "You fucking suck dude". And I listened to that criticism and gave up. I stopped trying to make something work that was never going to work... I moved on to making electronic music. Completely gave up on lyrics and all of that shit and not only did I feel better about the music I was making, I got better feedback and acceptance from the community. So I'm a decent Electronic musician, and a subpar singer/lyricist. Letting go of that shit (and the embarrassment that came along with it) was the best thing I ever did.

that's really interesting to hear. very valid viewpoint. When did you start with singer/songwriter/live instrumentation stuff? Because I'm in about that vein and very happy with the stuff I'm making now but when I first started out I was just fucking awful and confused. I was tempted a lot to just explore other music avenues that i'm interested in like ambient and other stuff but I'm glad I stuck it out to the other side with what I started with. so it' s very interesting to hear about someone who ended up being happier just straight transitioning to a different genre. I honestly truly believe that anybody can be good at any music with enough practice but I guess you're right in that there have been some awful American Idol contestants who definitely did have enough time to get good but simply didnt lmao, and there is definitely tons of music buried in the internet that is "unlistenably" bad. I was singer/songwriter in highschool, tried to get serious about it in college. But I can only play rhythm guitar, can't really pick worth shit. So when I sing and play solo, it's pretty bland. My voice isn't "bad". I can hold a tune and hit some good sounding high notes when I have to, but the tone of my voice is "thin" so I know i'd sound better with some vocal effects (which isn't an option at open mics lol). So i transitioned late in college, been doing electronic stuff ever since.
I disagree though. I don't think anyone can be good at ANY type of music. I think anyone can be DECENT. Anyone can learn a little guitar if they fiddle around with one for a few months... But does that doesn't qualify them as "good". And the thing is, everyone peaks at different levels. Some of those people on "American Idol", the potential just isn't there. It's the same reason I will never be a professional body builder. No matter how much I train, I do not have the physical potential to grow that big. With music, some people's brains just "work musically". Some people are born with "an ear for music" and they can "play by ear". A lot of people can't, and won't be able to get on the same level as the people who have the added benefit of being "naturally gifted".

I can feel the emotion but there's some things you can work on vocally: you have some intonation, especially on the "woah-ooohh-ohh". You tend to be flat. The guitar was fine, but the overall recording could have been brighter. There was a lot of "mud" in the recording that can be EQ'd out with a simple plugin.
Also, practice singing from your chest. It's hard to explain, but it will really help you vocally and you won't sound so "nasally" on lines like "miss me." But the song was good, you pretty much nailed it otherwise.

Any digital audio workstation like Ableton will have one built in that you can use. There are certain frequencies of sound that you can boost or take away to get the "clear" sound from your guitar and vocals. Just don't go overboard, read up a bit about how to mix and your songs will be surprised how good your songs start sounding!
