You mean controllers with only 5-pin right? No USB?

Those would be some insane specs, Roland was the king of midi controllers with many well thought out features, but most of the time they would only transmit two channels at once.

>>65909734
just mold those sounds into nice percussive instruments. the key to how burial does it is mostly in the sequencing though.

>>
>>65912077
Lots. I have a JX-10, but it's impossible to gig with, both being gigantic and knobless. I usually gig with a Minimoog and a combo organ, sometimes just the organ

I also have a blofeld that can sit right on top where the tetra would go, I don't gig with the blofeld because I've never had a good parking space for it.

Potentially, it would be replacing the Minimoog for most band gigs
>>
>>65912263
Also, just an FYI for people ITT, the blofeld sounds like trash in the upper octaves. Not like shitty DAC trashiness that makes old samplers sweet, more like aliasing and missing partials. Still a great synth though.

Hi guys, not sure where else I could post this and get a quick answer, but I wanna get this little box basically to run my vocals through it and delay them. If there's an aux and headphones input, I'll be able to plug the mic directly into the monotron through the aux, then run a cable from the headphone jack into an amp right? I just want to make sure it'll work before buying it. Sorry this is a stupid question.

That's what I figured, luckily I already have some adapters. But fuck dude that's basically my setup! I have the Volca Keys with a midi controller attached, it's incredible. Looking to get the FM soon.
>>
>>65923545
A "Key" is just the scale you use to base all the music on. So if the scale you're using is C major, you're in C major. If you start playing centering around a different note than C, you're probably changing key, and you begin making all the music around a different scale.

If you think of a key as the bass note you always return to, imagine a key change is when you consistently return to a new bass note that is different than the original one. So for a whole song you're been spamming C in the bass, then there's a section when spamming D# feels much more right, so that part is probably in a different key.

Have a look at this guys videos:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Y01jIorpeA

pretty good stuff, he covers a lot.

If you want to get more advanced check out ArtofCounterpoint's videos too, for more in-depth harmony and actual counterpoint

How's the keys? I was undecided between the keys and bass, but had a play with both in a shop and the bass seemed like it was most intuitive at the time for me. I think I might end up with both the fm and keys eventually, although some outboard effects are next on the list I think. I think you'll like sending the keys through the Monotron too, it makes the bass seem a lot more usable.

I hear the kick from the famous break "Headhunters - God made me funky", with a layered electronic simplified subbass kick underneath. Maybe that helps?

This is a pretty common technique in some circles of electronic music- using acoustic breaks as the 'scaffolding' and layering simple electronic drums (usually good at one thing- bass, transient, something that is missing from the break itself).

Noisia uses an extreme version of this technique, sometimes with many layers for a single drum hit. This is not as extreme, but follows a similar methodology.

It is sounding pretty good to me, Super useful: Nudging one layer or the other a bit forward in time, so that the layers are not totally quantized. This has every bit as important as finding the sweet spot on the cent / fine tuning knob when layering- you find the right settings where the two hits 'coalesce' and 'lock in' and the best parts of each layer no longer interfere and fight each-other, but instead start to sound like one single hit.

If you are using audio tracks, then nudging things around is no big deal, you get a fair amount of precision. But, if you are using quantized midi triggered drums, it can be super helpful to use a sample delay plugin (as a plugin on the channel of one layer). Sample delay, not being 'echo" but rather, a simple knob that offsets audio in time by the smallest unit of time (samples). Its also tempo invariant, unlike regular nudging.

Does the subbass kick layer sound better when its 40 samples after the break kick? Does it sound better the other way around? 100 samples? you see where I'm going. Using timing as a powerful tool for layering sounds. You are already likely to be used to cleaning up the individual layers with EQ, so they don't interfere, but sample delay / nudging is just as powerful.

I look for sounds that are relatively harmonically simple (like Roland drum machine) to layer onto the richer, acoustic drum hits that are the backbone of the drum track. Simple electronic drums are often great because they fit neatly into the frequency voids that exist in a real drum sound. You use them to push the organic drum sounds into "larger than life territory'. Other techniques that are worth investigating- using stereo heavy, and pure mono layers, in some combination. You hear this a lot in EDM, where claps are given the stereo freedom, and maybe the bassy, mids, bulk of the drum sound is given the dead-center-mono space. End result, perceived width and power.

hey guys,

I have a song that sounds like it can fit into pic related's album but i'm really struggling with the production on this one

It feels like everything blends in so well with each other without individually standing out if that makes sense. what steps can I take to have my production have this feel?

I'm breaking up prod into various topics and going hard at each one for a solid month. Research, resources and techniques will be gathered.

Topics so far:

>Sampling

I'm going to be posting links to resources and interesting stuff in /prod/ or on the wiki that I find when I'm doing my research. Let me know if you have anything useful or have a suggestion!

not using an interface, guitar rig worked just fine with asio4all until my old pc got burned from the inside due to me not cleaning the insides for 4 years or more.
I had to change everything except the processer, now if i plug the guitar it doesnt make a sound at all, and the guitar rig just feedbacks as soon as the program starts even if there is not a guitar plugged.
dont know what to do, is amplitube a good alternative?
>>
>>65931835
Haven't listened to that album, but when I'm looking to make a mix more homogeneous, I try a lot of bussing to outboard stuff. A favorite short reverb trick I like to use is sending everything to a small practice amp in a tile bathroom and recording it with a mic. One time I tried several speakers, one for each instrument, but it proved too tedious and the results weren't much different than using one speaker. Sounded cool as hell when recording it though.

i got focusrite scarlett solo, 90% of the time i'll be recording guitar, i'm thinking about getting a sm57, im worried if my audio interface is good enough for that mic ? can i still get the quality of sm57 with scarlet solo
>>
>>65936482
The quality of the mic itself is more of a factor here. I know some people like to tout the 57 as mic gold, but it's really just the standard for dynamic mics. It's not some hi-fi condenser mic.
>>
>>65936482
a Focusrite and an SM57 will do fine for most electric guitar sounds. Might even start to annoy you because you'll start to hear the deficiences of your room as a recording environment.

no i had been erasing the kick sample and starting from scratch

Electric guitar or acoustic? If you're recording an amp then a 57 will work. It will still work fine for an acoustic guitar but you might want a condenser for that.

If you aren't already recording with it and don't know how to use it; you have to buy an audio interface and an XLR cable.

That was the idea. I'm shit at composition too.

I see a lot of posts on here regarding motivation and hitting walls with creativity, so I thought that doing something like uploading a few samples might help people get out of the way they are working by giving them a minimal sample set that they probably wouldn't use normally to either use as they are or to sound design them and create something different from them. It doesn't even have to be full tracks made just a small loop is fine. Do whatever you want with them.

What stuff do I need to have to start proding like it's meant to be? I only have Nexus2 for my synths and mainly use Harmor/Harmless or Nexus. I have a hard time finding a good sounding samples. Got any tips you could share? What's a good way to use compression?

Also I've done gigs where, mixing from the back, I've gotten complaints about it being too loud at the front because of the monitors on stage. I tried mixing from the front, and got complaints about things being too soft at the back. How do you handle situations like this, besides just telling people to piss off?
>>
>>65950202
>How do you handle situations like this, besides just telling people to piss off?
planning and setting up a system in a way that it evenly fills the venue is a thing that needs a lot of experience and try&error, especially with the crappy venues, low budgets and loud stages everywhere. don't worry, m8. telling people to fuck off is the right decision here.

>What's a good way to use compression?
that's a very diffuse question.
to answer diffusely: use it as needed.
basically there's three main problems that make you want to compress signals: emphasizing or controlling the attack (snare drum hurts), shorter or longer sustain (kick drum is muddy) and the most common thing: controlling overall dynamics (keyboard player changing presets)
learn how to dial in any type of compressor in a way that gets you these kind of results and learn how to decide what type of compression helps you solve your problems in the mix

Thanks.

Regarding compression, I think maybe I just haven't developed a proper ear for it. I know how it works in theory, but even when fiddling with the settings I still find it hard to pick out the differences. Incidentally we use an electric drum kit which only has a stereo output, so I can't adjust effects for individual drums.

Not much you can't find on YouTube or gearslutz, to be honest, the difference being they want your money badly.

The only true benefit of going to a school like Full Sail in 2016 is meeting other producers. Might lead to collabs and shit, but the thing is, a vast majority is going to come out unprepared to actually produce and they're probably going to market their services at other producers instead because it's a gullible market (hence the many sample pack crews like Cymatics selling resampled stuff from commercial releases or the thousands of guru bloggers who never released anything noteworthy but have 5 secrets for your productions to make top 100 of Beatport).

I dont think anyone here has studied music production at university or college level. Maybe 5%.

I did a music degree and part of that was music technology which included working with protools, logic and learning about production, effects, etc. It was pretty cool and I learned some tricks about EQ, but most of it I knew already, as I had been working with DAWs for 10 years before I decided to get serious about music and study it at university. I mostly went to learn how to write for orchestra, majoring in composition, so not so much the production side. There was a whole section dedicated to production and they got to use a pretty nice million dollar desk (Solid State Logic C200HD ) and dedicated studio which I was pretty jealous of. You could essentially do a masters degree in production, and all the assignments were "record X, record Y" I had buddies who were recording their bands for their honors degrees. Pretty cruisey course really.

Music production is a very broad field.

If you're talking about just making whatever music you want, you don't need school, but it can be helpful. I believe you can't really teach someone to make art, you can only give a person the tools to do so.

If you want to be a music professional, however, colleges get a lot more interesting. You meat people already working in the field and you get an internship, etc.

The intricacies of stuff like sound design, acoustics, audio design (music software) , recording, producing and mastering are all a lot easier to master in a short time when you go to school ie. learn from people with extended experience in the field, ask direct questions, and practice before you get to do it for money.

In that case it's the same like with any school.
The difference is when you basically just want to make tunes to express yourself. There is no fixed way to do this right. If there was it would be a science, not an art.

It can help you a whole lot though if you want to be a professional music producer. I learned a lot in a short time which made it easier to find new ways of expressing myself.

Just imagine if someone was to tell you what the 'right' style was to produce in. Or what a 'tasteful' melody is. Sure you can give examples of acclaimed musical material and analyze that. But much further than that and you'll forget what art is all about, imo.

It most likely will. Even if you cast the .wav byte data into .txt and remove a few characters from the data chunk you'll just shift the remaining bytes and the data that constituted a single sample will just be split into lower and higher bytes between the channels (depending on bit depth), not to mention RIFF length fields won't match and the file might not load. Look up wav structure to see which bytes you need to fix afterwards, get a hex editor and see for yourself what comes out of it.

This is very interesting. Really clear production too. Kickass and imaginative drums. Vocals make it sound pretty bad, like it's a meme. No offence, but the production on the vocals is pretty bad I think. And it sounds edgy lyrically and how it's delivered imo.

Sound design and composition, however, is excellent!
You could play around more with some subs and bass sounds, though. Maybe a bit of a harder hitting layered snare. But damn that's a nice rhythm.
