I feel the same about most metal. Sepultura and Slayer both have moments where there's... songwriting... but Reign In Blood has at least 20 minutes of tracks that sound exactly the same to me.

Pretty much all thrash/death/metalcore sounds exactly the same. Metal is best when it's how it was originally: really heavy blues.

Since I don't listen to metal, I assume you're not asking for my favourite metal bands. I like AnCo, Ariel Pink, Swans, Sufjan Stevens, Deerhunter/Atlas Sound, Flying Lotus, Death Grips, Battles, Modest Mouse, of Montreal, The Flaming Lips, Thee Oh Sees, Son Lux. Lots of surface-level mu stuff really.
