Reposting from last thread,
Just sold my old amp for 200 and I'm looking for new one. I'd be willing to put another 200 down making my budget 400. Can someone recommend an amp that has good cleans around that price? I won't be able to fully crank it since I live in an apartment but I'd like for it to be loud enough to jam with a drummer. Thanks. ALSO, I'm an idiot and didn't mention that I need a HEAD since I already have a 4x12 cab. Thanks a bunch dudes. I don't mind solid state amps since I know Sunn and Ampeg amps can be good.
>>
>>65865512
Nice! Ive got a thing for 80s sideways humbucker shred guitars
>>
>>65865750
For cleans I can only think on combos
Fender Hot Rod Deluxe
Roland JC120

Maybe Peavey ValveKing? If you can find it on budget.
>>
>>65865835
Hm alright, well I can find ways around that then. How about just all around good versatile amps for that price range? I've been looking into the Blackstar ht-5rh cause I know the overdrive is good, and I heard a guy play jazz through one and it sounded pretty good, though it was pretty trebly.
>>
>>65865750
If all you need is cleans I don't think it'll cost that much for good quality. You can get an older MG100 and have killer cleans for under $200.
>>
>>65865738
BTB33 is a 4 string bass with a high string instead of a low, don't get it unless that's what you want.
I doubt you'd find a Dingwall for under 1,5k, I heard they're amazing though.
G&L is one of Leo Fender's companies, just like Musicman, they're great but less known than fender despite being imagined the same person.
No idea about Spectors and MTDs though.
Consider also Sandbergs, I've heard nothing but praise for them.

>>65865835
>For cleans I can only think on combos
Absolutely not. Whether you're playing head/cab or combo has nothing to do with how clean it is.
>>
>>65865738
go read talkbass posts for a while, you're not getting anywhere using google and amazon.
>>
>>65865549
It's a parts guitar and plays well with my music
>>
>>65865959
>Absolutely not. Whether you're playing head/cab or combo has nothing to do with how clean it is.
What I meant that within the budget I can only think of combos, not heads. Not that one is better suited than the other. It's just that the ones that I can remember are all combos and he wants a head.
>>
Tablature with time notation above is the most proper way to read or write guitar music. Prove me wrong.

maybe a Bugera V22 head? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5q7gXe-jD6Y
>>
>>65866039
the only thing tab has going for it is exact voicing description. imo that information is less valuable than the harmonic & melodic relationships that are instantly apparent in standard notation.
>>
>>65866054

I'll look into that for sure, how is the overdrive on it? Do you know if it'd take a fuzz pedal well?

>>
>>65865750
The Egnator tweaker 40 is sweet. There's a lot of flexibility there. Fender hot rods don't come in heads that I know of. Peavey classics are a good look. Sovteks have doubled in price on the used market, but I don't think anyone cares about Red Bears yet if you're into a jcm kind of thing.

I like silvertone and univox ss and you could probably track one of these down for 100-200.

>>65865903
I feel like you could land an MG with a $75 budget and a little leverage at a pawn.
>>
>>65866196
Sheet's also great because it leaves room for interpretation, tabs are generally just followed like a guide.
The only garbage notation is straight up tabs with no rhythm/harmonic info.
>>
>>65866373
You know what, I used to have a classic 50 head which I loved. I only got rid of it because it broke on me, but maybe I could get another. I've heard that Egnaters have quality control issues, do you happen to know anything about that?

>>
>>65866460
I swapped the power transformer in the Egnator I flipped. The four mounting screws and four quick connect wires where stupid simple. The export switch (110v to 220v) didn't survive because it's cheap plastic with six wires more or less welded to it.

I can't say that their qc or reliability is going to be any better or worse than Hot Rods and other similar mid range production models. You're getting a lot of value at the price point . Anything vintage is going to be under the gun for a refresher touch up too.

A cathode biased peavey with fresh caps and wave solder would be the humvee of tube amps.

How versatile are JC-120s? I'm considering selling my cab and head and just picking one of these guys up for all of my pedals. Do they take fuzz, delay and other wacky effects well? I know the guitarist from melt banana uses one which is why I ask.
>>
>>65867848
There's one on my local craigslist for only 300, reverb is broken however. I have a reverb pedal and I've heard that the amp reverb isn't the best. Should I nab it?
>>
>>65867848
It's a decent pedal amp and it has a gorgeous chorus and does pristine cleans very well.

It doesn't do gritty semi-cleans by itself.

It doesn't do edge of breakup by itself.

If you want that stuff, you need pedals.

A word about the cleans. They are 'cool' cleans. Jazz players often like the sound, but some rock players find it 'sterile' or too perfect.

Listen to purple rain, and you'll get the idea.

The eq is pretty versatile though, and with the right preamps you can imitate a lot of different sounds.
>>
>>65867112
Old Atreyu is excellent, early metalcore which was more like old emo with metal riffs, not very distorted more like overdriven guitars, amateur mastering which had style.
Second full length had better mastering, and it was pretty cool in a weird mix of glam buttrock infused metalcore/emo.
And seeing him use George Lynch signatures was great, a great departure from the usual black guitars everywhere.
>>
>>65867848
Clean is good, overdriven is... dry? and you need a soft distortion to get tube overdriven kind of sound. Works great, I've heard it (in gigs) used as second amp to basses and main amp obviously for guitars in many styles but mostly rock/metal or jazz, jazzy pop.
>>
>>65866867
Don't buy from amazon.
Try local stores near you or craigslist, it's a popular bass and easy to find.
If absolutely new, then musiciansfriends, sweetwater, etc. tend to have standard prices online.

i wanted a cheap bass for my dorm but didnt want to bring anything expensive. some guy across the hall got his laptop stolen. i was looking around the local pawn shops for a few weeks but they didnt have anything good.

so i got a rondo. the intonation was good on three of the saddles but for some reason the last one was pushed down all the way. who does that? the neck is nice and chunky. it sounds fine desu.
>>
>>65868277
The cleans are simply... super clean, since it's a solid state amp. No "warmth" or "coloring" other than the eq and pedals you have.
So some pick ups shine with it, and some others just sound like an unplugged solid body.
I personally like it a lot, I used to use it as a bedroom and jam/practice amp a lot because it's simple and sounds like straight out of the guitar.
I now have a tube, but I'll probably go back to a JC-120 in the future when I move away.
>>
>>65868277
Listen to purple rain (the track). The intro is prince playing a clean JC-120 with a telecaster and the chorus turned on. It's the quintessential Jazz Chorus sound.

I think Metallica and a lot of metal groups also used JC-120's for cleans in the studio on several albums.

If you're looking to use rats or fuzzes or stuff, you'll probably be fine.

It's hard to describe what I mean by 'sterile'. I'd say the highs are brilliant and the lows are deep yet tight. It might sound scooped depending on your EQ settings. It's a very 'Hi-Fi' kind of sound.

I don't think it's a bad sound, but you should know what you're getting into.

I know a LOT of metal players like the cleans because of the slightly evil/unsettling feel they can have.

I plan on working at guitar center so I can make some money while in Uni. What should I be aware of? What would I be asked in the interview? I know GC used to have a commission based system, but most stores don't do that anymore, only some do, do they do commission in Maryland?

I will most likely work in the guitar department
>>
>>65869119
They like it when you to know all departments. Study up on lights and speakers and drums and shit. Everybody wants to sell guitars.
>>
>>65869119
You'll be asked about sales. You're going to hate it because you're a salesman. You'll be in direct competition with all of your coworkers. If you undersell, you get fired. Enjoy working at a shitty store full of bitter people who couldn't make it in the music biz.
>>
>>65868136
so guitar center? isnt it cheaper online? and craigslist i dont trust since my brother has tried to cheap out on expensive equipment, its all pretty shit from there. same prices on those sites like amazon
>>
Another GC question, how flexible are their hours?

I spend until 12pm at uni
>>
>>65869194
Just compare around, amazon, musiciansfriend, ebay, craigslist, reverb, etc.
There's a tooooon of SR ibanez basses out there, seriously, anything above the 305 is good (avoid that one because of shit preamp and shit curved pick ups).
SR505 go super cheap used because it has "no paint" basically a light paint or oil cover, which gets rubbed away with playing so resale value goes down a lot, like 250-350 range instead of the 700+ you see new.
>>
Hey /gg/ I asked this in the last thread but didn't get a chance to see the answers so I'll ask again: how do you learn arpeggios as of right now ive been going through major arpeggios up and down the neck but I feel like I'm over complicating it and there's probably some patterns I'm not seeing
>>
>>65869304
I started with 3 string ones, then went to 4 and so on.
It's easier if you look up a scale (like full neck scale) identify a cage-like area, and build the arpeggio from there, you can also cheat and argpeggiate however you want if you know the scale by memory (like if you're super familiar with one), to do like trickery with tapping, skipping, etc.
As usual, slow and steady, use metronome, speed up only if you don't miss the beat and do it cleanly.
>>
>>65869119
Your plan is fundamentally flawed.

Solid state amps output varies on the cab's ohms. Typically the max rated output is only reached at 4 ohms. So solid state amps USUALLY can play any cab between 4 - 16 ohms. Output (wattage) will just vary depending on what load it is (ohms).

Here, I took the D major scale, and I found a common pattern for an arpeggio.
Red numbers under tab is finger used, I like to hammer on from B to D (first two notes), and F# hammer on to A and pull off back to F# (last notes in the arpeggio) go up and pull off from D to B (back to first note).

Maybe you can find arpeggios in songs you like?

I like one from Coroner which can be looped eternally and sounds cool.
This dude nails it https://youtu.be/KhFLoxRTZBI?t=74 (put it at 1:14 already before the arpeggio, just in case it skips back to start).

I worked at the one in Rockville MD for a short while. Was still commission based at the time. Was alright. They didnt care what you knew, just whether you could sell stuff or not.

It was pretty disorganized too. The novelty of guitars and amps wore off quick. The pay was shit unless you managed to sell a ton. Most people going to guitar center don't plan on making any major purchases though.

Also had to work over 40 hours a week.

Would stay away unless they paid you hourly and agreed to let you work part time.
>>
>>65870007
Would you recommend it over a boss ds2? I have a musket fuzz I use for rhythm but I want something I could use as a boost/for solos and the boss is total trash for that
>>
>>65869913
Solid state amps can play anything from 4 ohms to ∞ ohms, the only risk is whether the speaker can handle it. Some solid states don't like to be run with no speaker(∞ ohms) but it's rare.
>>
>>65868398
What do you have now?
>>
>>65870104
Yeah, I like it for solos, but I also like simply boosting volume and pushing mids for solos. It's a pretty dirty pedal.

My buddy asked me to help identify this guitar and we'll I'm fucking stumped, solid body ES shape, wrap around bridge, master volume/tone, 24 frets, head stock says studio les paul and to top it all off looks like a maple fret board
>>
>>65870044
Note to note, or chord to chord?
Note to note... I like to pick with pick flat to string but angled back (so like pointing towards my head) and the opposite when going up. It's not how I pick for riffs or chords, but for arpeggios I like the clarity over the crunchyness of picking a bit sideways.
Sounds complicated but it's basically holding the pick a bit softer and it will naturally do that for me.
Chord to chord, there's many ways but I'm not that good so I just do root-down-root, slide and start again in the next root. It works and is used commonly because it makes the chord sound complete, if you know your scales and dedicate time to it, you can build a non ending arpeggio across the whole neck if you want, just slide, hammer on, pull off, and so on for smoothness and connection.

Guys, I need your help.
I'm familiar with fret buzz, but I'm getting this whirring sound when I pick particular strings on my guitar. It's not really a buzz, but a whirring noise...I can't quite explain it.

Anyone familiar with this? It's a very mellow and ambient noise sort of like "wooossshhhh" right behind the note I play. I'm worried.

if you want it for more than just a single recording you might want to just pick up a used squier or something. i played guitar in my high school's jazz band and did that since we had too many guitarists and i was the worst one. i got to learn something new and sold it for a $50 profit after i graduated. picking up new instruments on a whim is a good way to learn and make better music imo.

Exposed wires.

Electromagnetic dust will get inside and wear down the pickup wiring
>>
>>65872447
It's a p90, and it's a switch in the switch position. It's hard to see in the picture, but there's actually a toggle next to it. The rotary switch controls the humbucker. I can split either side and run both coils in series or parallel. The toggle is a master series/parallel, and I can also change the phase of the neck pickup.

I thought jazz soapbars were just p90s.

>>65872540

Soldering new wires in once every couple decades with an easy chore for the aesthetic.

Also
>implying I don't change pickups once every couple years out of project boredom.
>>
>>65872605
The control plates don't look as good with it off, except maybe the lower one. Same with a naked jazz bass, it needs a different shape to not look like it's mounted onto an imaginary pickguard.

Of course, arguing aesthetics is kinds silly but to me it does not look good.
>>
>>65872548
Damn, that's like a really good result, now I wanna keep at it with my project that I was thinking of just selling as a blank now for cheap.

Nah Jazz soapbars have a different construction and tone.

>>65872605
How are exposed wires a pro? rust, shit going in, tangling around, shit to get stuck on, etc. Also do you rewire or how swap pups every week? unlike other components I doubt easy access is necessary.
I won't argue looks like the other said because that's a personal thing.
I don't it quite fits the guitar like it does with the basses though.

Get a clear pickguard
>>
>>65872768

I think you're right.
>>
>>65872742
Definitely try it, I have no regrets. My only advice is that if you're going to have a lot of switches and have them far apart, you need a ton of extra space for the wires. Ideally you should have them close together, I didn't put mine close together for aesthetic reasons. Anyway there's no guitar that can't be made into a killer axe. I've upgraded a first act before, the thing can shred now. I need to take an up-to-date picture of it.

As far as the p90 goes, I doubt I will use it in combination with the humbucker much, but it sounds good solo and with the bridge. Despite all the options I gave myself here, I tend to prefer using a single pickup at a time. The bridge + neck is hum cancelling. So strats can suck it.

As long as it was 200 or sub and just learning, it'll be ok. Change the strings for better first thing, or go to guitarcenter or your local shop and have the guitar tech restring and setup the guitar. Pay for decent strings, ddadario or better $6 or better strings. Also get a better instrument cable and maybe strap for comfort.

>First of all (and speaking from a steel string guitar perspective), let's discard the notion that some species of wood make good instruments and that others don't. The concept of tonewood is a hoax. Of the few things that we can do to a guitar and still call it a guitar, changing the wood it is made of will have the least impact upon the quality of the sound that it produces. The tonal difference between a mahogany guitar and a rosewood guitar is exactly the same as the difference between two mahogany guitars or two rosewood guitars. Can you tell what a guitar is made of while listening to an unfamiliar recording? No one I know claims they can. No one at the blind listening sessions I've attended could reliably distinguish between mahogany and rosewood guitars, or maple and koa guitars for that matter.

Tonewood shills blown the fuck out!

In that case I guess Ibanez is the best bet? I'm not metal person but I hear MIJ RGs from the 80s are really cheap.
>>
Is it ok for guitar if I was walking with it with no case under a little rain like for 5-10 minutes?

87-93 RG550 and 88-92 RG560 are cheap and fantastic guitars. Main thing that plagues them is neck warping, so I wouldn't buy one online. Pretty much gotta check them out in person.

What can you say about BC Rich Stealth?
>>
>>65877299
keep that shit out of the sun, away from a window when your gone. A guitar is wood and metal, it'll expand and contract, it bad ways. Buy a good name brand hardshell, foam lined case, if you really love your shit. Keep your shit out of a hot car/van too.

Had a chance to buy a Hurdy Gurdy. The old man wanted cash and to meet in a public place. I had the runs that day and missed out. I could have bought a nice wheel violin. Im not sad at all. At least I have my money and cocaine.

One of the best brutal death albums was recorded on a strat.

Any guitar works for metal as long as you stick a humbucker in the bridge.

How can I easily come up with melodies while soloing? Every time I jam I have a hard time trying to make my solos sound actually interesting. I just mess around the pentatonic scale or shoehorn some licks in, but it sounds artificial and not exciting at all.

How can I move from the basic pentatonic wankery to musically rich improvisation?
>>
>>65877331
BC Rich is all over the place because it changes owners and manufacturers all the fucking time.

That said a good Stealth is very comfy to play, only problem might be the chuck sig model having a smaller and thinner neck than expected from a metulmashin.

>>65879055
This, there's never a limit of what you can play on whatever you want to play.
That said, strats are super versatile so it's no wonder.

>pentatonic scale or shoehorn some licks in
You need more scales.
Like if you're in a major scale, play some full scale major scale solo over it.
It will sound joyful.
Now play... like over a minor key, play a minor chord or a riff made of minors of the key, and play over the scale of the minor key. It will sound nostalgic, melodic, etc.
Keep playing the minor key, but do like a funky shuffle, play minor scale and also blues scale.
It'll sound basically like david gilmour.

If you like metal, do a two chord riff, put it in a minor harmonic scale, and just play over the harmonic scale.

Basically, being comfortable with different scales and understanding why they sound like that (like oh I get that the difference in mood between major and minor is this diminished bit and those notes make it sound happy or sad) will hopefully broaden your horizon.

Best 'Fender' guitar coming through
How the fuck did they not make it with a tremolo though like goddamn would've been the perfect sheogaze/noiserock guitar
Also gonna have to switch the humbucker for something with more output. I assume replacing a humbucker with coil tapping is possible and not any harder than replacing a normal one?
>>
>>65879745
This looks like the ultimate punk-rock guitar.
>>
>>65879638
I guess you're right, I can't do much with just the pentatonic scale. I also know the major scale but I'm never sure how to mix them both. Playing some chords and arpeggios in between could add some diversity, right?

I know the theory, my problem is I need to find a way to put that musical knowledge into practice, to avoid getting stuck in improvisation over the pentatonic patterns.
>>
>>65879745
Shit color, you must have horrible taste.
>>
>>65879745

Swapping for a coil tap one just requires also replacing a post with the pickup. It's not hard, just follow the wiring diagram.
>>
>>65879745
But that's not a Squier '51
>>
>>65881189
Yup, the best fender isn't a squier 51, you're right.
